Beckham and Moore

Lou Birt - Programme Editor | 14:37 PM, Tuesday, 10 February 2009

David Beckham and Bobby Moore
David Beckham is sure to play some part in England's friendly with Spain, taking him level with Bobby Moore as his country's most-capped outfield player. It'll be his 108th appearance for his country.

Bobby Moore, of course, was England's World Cup-winning captain in 1966 and is widely considered to be one of the best central defenders this country has ever produced.

We spoke to his close friend, BBC commentator Jonathan Pearce:

    Stupid Question.

Beckham is far superior to Moore in a wide right role and Moore was imperious as a Defender .

How do you compare to such different players from such different eras

You cannot easily compare, all you can do is look at facts and draw conclusions which may or may not be right.

Beckham is a role model to many, but this is an age of vacuous celebrity.

Moore had his hands on the World Cup - fact.

If Beckham gets a cap tomorrow both will have 108 and the FA will no doubt sell England shirts with Beckham's name and 108 on them.

Can somone tell me how many minutes each will have actually been on the pitch in those 108 games? Beckham seems to be getting cameo roles to boost his cap total - a sorry end for a player who played is heart out for his country but at the end of the day did little else other than score from free kicks - oh yes and get sent off.

Beckham plays right wing in a modern system, Moore played left half in a system as far removed from the present as it is possible to get. Moore could not cross a ball anywhere near as well as Beckham and Beckham could not tackle as well as Moore. Both were/ are comfortable on the ball and both, desrvedly, represented this country exceptionally well. If todays players took the same pride in putting on the England shirt as both Bobby & David we would England would be a much better team.
