Russell T Davies and the Next Doctor

Lou Birt - Programme Editor | 14:51 PM, Thursday, 18 December 2008

The Doctor Who Christmas Special got its first screening today. Various TV critics got to see "The Next Doctor" in a special showing. The rest of us will have to wait until Christmas night to watch it though. Joining David Tennant will be David Morrissey and Dervla Kirwan.

After the screening, Victoria spoke to Doctor Who Executive Producer Russell T Davies and our entertainment reporter Colin Paterson (who'd got to see it). Have a listen below:

You can always check out the latest promo for the Christmas special on the Dr Who site. There's also the Dr Who Advent Calendar and make your own trailer at bbc.co.uk/doctorwho.

As a producer of Dr. Who, I don't think Russell T Davies is in any position to criticize Stargate, it's a class above the cheese he has been putting out. I suppose he's bitter than Carlyle has opted to join a bigger show, but even so, remarks like that are a bit unprofessional. Pathetic really.

Agreed Russell's comments on stargate are pathetic. It is the most successful sci-fi show. I only watched the first season of Dr Who due the eccentricity of Eccleston, which kept me constantly entertained but after that it became quite unbearable. It is not sci-fi instead; should be seen as mostly fantasy. However stargate SG-1 is quite unparalleled i think, with its scientific rationalism, not to mention two famous scientists were in 16/17th episode of Atlantis.
And to think Davies would see Tate LOL Tate!! anywhere near Amanda Tapping's unbelievable acting, is ignorant. What is even more amazing is that Tapping at times corrects the writers when they are writing about 'wormhole physics'.
Anyway SG-1 is the most successful sci-fi show with some of the best actors in sci-fi. To think if someone sees Dr Who anywhere near Stargates class of entertainment, is in my opinion seriously delusional, biased, or in Davies case just bitter.

Mr T Davis does love his show doesn't he and I bet he hates it when Dr Who is dissed ! So I guess he's just narrow minded and thinks his show is the be all and end all of scifi ! er yeah right and nothing else matters now that he's actually managed to drag the show into the 21st century even if the Daleks seem to be in every other episode ! That's new....not. Leave Stargate alone ! what's next laughing because there's a new Star Trek film coming soon.

Amazing how some enraged kids come out of the woodwork - hey kids, Davies is regarded as a bit of God in the UK, he has nothing to be bitter over - AND he has left the show - what would he care.

And while Dr.Who is not so credible scifi wise (it is a childrens program after all) - but Stargate and Atlantis were never brilliant shows, they are mass produced gruel with too many fingers producing what is basically crap.

And don't forget, Dr.Who has millions more viewers than that atlantis rubbish.

Just read the comments from "perless".
So where do you get your figures from,I guess you are talking about the UK only.
Dr Who is shown on primetime on one of the major channels in the Uk,this is not the case in other countries,Where the Stargate shows easily out perform Dr Who.

As someone who is more a fan of SGA than Dr. Who, I hardly think this is worth getting so upset over.

Plenty of people think Dr. Who is the best show out there. Others go for Battlestar Galactica. Others prefer something like Stargate: Atlantis (which I happen to prefer over SG1). There are episodes of Dr. Who that far outstrip some episodes of Atlantis and vice versa.

Besides, the new series will be nothing like Atlantis or SG1 any more than those two series are like each other.

I think the comment about Carlyle was a teeny bit unprofessional, but I also am not taking it particularly seriously. It doesn't sound like they were taking it all that seriously either. *shrug*

If nothing else, it does give me a little faith in the effort that is being put into the new Stargate series. I adore Robert Carlyle. The man is a wonderful actor.

Your disscussions today on the BMP and there beliefs has ignored the following facts. We are all a result of our own cultures i.e. the way we live, our language, what we eat, our religion the way we live. All these things are in our physical and mental make-up. Therefore when other cultures impose themselves it is a threat to ones own existance. Therefore it is a natural instinct to reject other races. So if the department for equality and human rights are to be totally representative they should also allow English, Welsh, Irish and Scotts people to protect there own cultures there own way of life as well.
