Poems for Armistice Day

Lou Birt - Programme Editor | 09:16 AM, Tuesday, 11 November 2008

remembrance_poppies_main.jpgWe'll be pausing for two minutes at 11 o'clock today to mark Armistice day.

When we talked about the importance of remembering and the wearing of poppies a few weeks ago, we had such a big response that we kept in touch with some of the listeners we spoke to - many of whom were under 16.

Joshua Peters is nine years old and he has written some poems about remembrance. He'll be on the radio at about 10.50am today, and two others, both called Olivia, will read their poems about World War 2 after the silence.

Here's one of Joshua's poems I thought you might like to see:

Heaven is all around, Life in War 1914-1918

Lying without motion on the ground
The lost ones have been found.
The dead have been crowned.
Heaven is all around.
Those soldiers fought in war
With the Devil at their doors.
Now without a sound,
Heaven is all around.
Don't leave them there, for God's sake,
End their loved ones ache.
Heaven is here.

    Hi All
What a excellent poem from Joshua.

Regarding the new schedule, it is important that programmes are re-vamped from time to time to try and keep them fresh, but I have a couple of observations. When the midday news is axed, I think Aasmah should be given another show. She's an excellent presenter. Not sure I agree with the criticism of Nicky. I'm sure he'll do a good job from 9 till 10.

Can't say I'm particularly happy about the 5live move to Salford. The rumours are that Nicky won't go, Simon Mayo won't renew his contract, maybe Peter Allen won't want to move and maybe Anita Anand too and maybe even Victoria won't want to move her family: who would blame any of them. That's 5 of the top presenters: a disaster waiting to happen. I suspect it's a PC attempt to silence the London centric critics, but let's face it, most of the guests on all shows are based in, around or visit London to plug books, films etc. We'll end up with new Z list celebrity presenters, phone ins and guests live by satellite. IT'S A DISASTER: MOVE THE DG AND THE BBC BOARD AFTER ALL WE WOULDN'T REALLY MISS THEM.
