We all need a break from the doom and gloom. This morning, when Phil Williams stood in for Victoria we talked about escapism and the best way to just tune out of the world for a couple of hours.
There were some lovely callers. Have a listen to Martin and Roy.
The majority were totally misled, misinformed, self-interested and completely won over by a generally imbalanced BBC coverage of the whole economic crisis in defence of free market neoliberal economic policies that have unequivocally failed.
It's hardly the job of the BBC to promote everything along the lines of 'doom and gloom'! This gives the overiding impression to many that the economic crisis is inevitable, not man-made, and recessions are a fact of life when in fact they are endemic features of capitalism!(Had made these point to a researcher in the hope of making them on air but to no avail)
To be fair on the BBC its not entirely its fault. It may be an economic meltdown but its more fundamentally a political meltdown in as much as none of the mainstream political parties disagree about anything tangible.
Consequently a bipartisan Parliament results in a bipartisan media which is why 'free market apologists' completely monopolise the panels on many of the BBC's discussion programmes about the state of the economy.
What about a 'phone in' item about how the BBC is covering this crisis?
