Find out how much your road tax will be..
Are you clear how much road tax you'll be paying from next year? The changes in vehicle excise duty only affect cars registered after March 2001. In order to work out how much extra you'll be paying click on this..
You can also check your car's CO2 emissions on your V5c vehicle registration certificate. It's on the second page in section 4 under "vehicle details"

Hi Victoria
Just heard which ever minister or MP you asked about this blatant over taxation... he reckons we have to pay it so that they can invest in 'public transport and more efficient cars'! (if I heard him correctly)
The last time the government invested in cars of any sort resulted in British Leyland (nuff said)!
...and which 'public' transport system do they intend investing in? (because Britain certainly doesn't have one - may he's thinking of investing in the German system :^) )
Good luck to the lorry drivers - we should all support them, taxation of any kind does not cure global warming it merely fills government coffers... (I could go on... but I'm starting to sound like Mr. Angry :^) )
Great show BTW...

On the other hand if you look around you could get a car that has zero road tax or one with an annual tax payment of just £35pa. I’m switching cars this summer. I only need a small car for city driving and most small cars will also cope with occasional motorway trips. For the elderly, the young or those that just need a small run-around these changes have considerable advantages. I also think the manufacturers will become increasing competitive over emissions as low road tax becomes a major selling point on the forecourts.
If you think about it the old tax system was a poll tax, charging everyone the same regardless of car size or usage; a tiered system is fairer.

I totally agree. If I lived in London, I wouldn't bother with a car at all. Unfortunately, like a lot of folk, I have to travel a lot of motorway miles for my job.
So, I drive a car that is 'fit for purpose'.
Cars are more efficient at 70 than they are at the (optimistic) 20 I'd be travelling in London, so it makes sense.
Why not scrap road tax altogether and simply tax fuel? The more you use, the more you pay...

it is patently obvious that Gordon Brown is completely out of touch with the ordinary person in the street. If fuel tax increases are so necessary then it should be included in the cost of living figures and then what would happen to the great god inflation. if there was any honesty in this debate the 'green' word would never be used and we could operate on an economic basis only.

I'm a bit floored to see that I'll be paying £200 road tax in 2010. My car's a 1991 Golf Mk2, it's done 40,400 miles. I do about 2,500 miles a year. I'd use a bus if they were any good but I reckon there has been no improvement in the quality of a bus ride in my lifetime - 60 years. They are bumpy, noisy, dirty and driven by underpaid discontented people who often take out their understandable frustration on their passengers.
Looks like the bus pass is going to win with a hire car for holidays ...... Oh, hang on! What do I do about my business? How am I going to get cardboard to recycling? What about those trips to the tip that the council would charge if they collected?
I don't want to fork out 3.5K for another car...
Looks like it's going to be £200 car tax.

This is another botched policy from this useless government.
It is all about tax raising , nothing to do with the environment .
If it was about the environment the government should be encouraging people to drive more , thereby putting more plant food gas (CO2) in to the atmosphere.
What reason will they come up with next to tax us all now the holes are appearing in the so called concensus

If the government proceed with these taxes it is almost certain that there will be an election before 2010.
The political damage and fall out as a result of the retrospective application of this tax will have very serious consequences for a large number of labour backbenchers and this will be the tipping point as far as they are concerned.
This is a case of 'listen and learn' but as most ministers and the prime minister in particular are deaf, will they listen. Their backbenchers assuredly will.
In addition I would not rule out a degree of civil unrest unless something is done.

I am annoyed that the anti car environmental nazis are given the amount press coverage that they enjoy. If anyone believes that this fly speck of an island can make any impact in global CO2 emmissions they are stupid. According to the Governments own figures if every car in the world is taken OFF the road it would not affect the CO2 levels to any measurable extent.

The government (and indeed the opposition) seem to think that 'green tax' is a popular tax!
Their stupidity is amusing you have to agree :^)

This is pure exploitation. There is no other word for it.
No provision seems to be made for dual fuel autos running on Propane.
No provision seems to be made for actual emmissions recorded during MOT Testing.
The only fair method of penalising people for CO2 emmisions is to tax fuel consumption which is already in place at the pumps. The amount of tax paid at the pumps should be directly related to the type of fuel being used and the CO2 emmissions that fuel produces. It follows therefore that there should be hardly any tax on Propane or Electric powered vehicles and diesel fuel should have a lower tax than petrol. Why is this not the case?

Yet another taxation mistake by the Government.
Over-borrowing is coming back to haunt Labour and the taxpayers are going to have to pay.
I am joining the many professionals heading overseas as the prospect of no political change for another 2 years and a recession is too much to bear.

What do the polluters have to offer?
Nothing: whining and lots of hot dirty air.
People want to drive and drive to no end to earn a living or for fun, and if we all choke to death or are eventually flooded, they just don't care.
The only way to force people to take actions in the long term benefit of the country and humanity, is forcing them.
Most people do not care about the state of the planet they are going to inherit to their descendants, but they are so selfish that other people (politicians) have to baby sit them into doing the right thing.
Scientists have said the last word about global climate change, but the ignorant public will never ever bow to the wisdom of the experts.
Experts in this country are obviously out to get you, their advice must be ignored because the people (ignorant, unprepared and selfish) know batter.
I hope that the current government or a future Tory one do not succumb to this rule of the mob.

I have a 8 year old car - it's all I can afford as a pensioner. It has CO levels that are 20% and 8% of the maximum allowed - so fairly green. I cannot walk very far due to a disability, although I still enjoy life, my children and grandchildren. I am totally sick of the people that advocate even higher prices on Petrol as a means of "saving the Planet" - it is not the answer and NO Professor in the world has adopted this position. If people think that the IPCC is the only body that does reserach they are out of their tiny minds. As many professors prove that the statistics are wrong as those who advocate they are right. PLEASE understand that all statistics used by the bureaucrats who tax us are based on "models" not actual statistics. The seas are cooling, temperatures are NOT increasing and taxing Mother Nature is not the answer.

Typical nuTory propaganda (like so much of the BBC these days). You only say find out how much "extra" you will pay. Well, my car tax has gone down to £35 and accroding to the website will be down to £20 next year. Sounds good to me.

With earnings upwards of £250,000 pa, salary, one of the best pensions available anywhere, allowances and a myriad of undeclared expenses included, numerous subsidised and free trips abroad; free access to what is regarded as the best club in the world, with bars and restaurants subsidised by the taxpayer at considerable cost (the Palace of Westminster) it would surprise me greatly if the recipients of this largesse were not a little concerned about the possible fallout of the effect on their jobs this tax might have.
Believe me, their minds will be heavily concentrated on their own future as the majority of them would find it very difficult, if not impossible, to find employment at anywhere near the level of remuneration they currently receive. Some would be unemployable at any level. Having said that, they are nothing if not pragmatic, and it is a safe bet that the ranks of dissenters (there are already reported to be 40 such) will grow exponentially and that this tax will be ‘killed off’.
The ‘green issue’ has, as always, been used as an excuse to raise taxes generally, the motorist included, but I now have the feeling that the general public are beginning to realise to what extent they have been asked to fund this governments grandiose and in many cases, wasteful policies, and are becoming more aware of the extent to which they are being conned.
This issue apart, this government has very little chance of being successful at the next election as the problems associated with the high levels of taxation are coming home to roost.

Big increases in petrol and road tax a surprise? Come on, it's been on the way for years and still we go on buying big motors with all the latest gizmos! Think small - save the world and save lots of dosh at the same time. Better still, buy an old push bike for all those little journeys!

Hi Ned
You're correct - I should have left out the word "extra".
Was fascinated to hear the variety of people who are struggling with fuel costs - so many listeners contacted us today. I still couldn't tell if a majority were backing the lorry drivers' fuel protests - do you want to subsidise their diesel costs?
Thks
Victoria

First opportunity to respond to today's comments regarding Road Fund Duty.
Austin Mitchell and his colleagues all stated that the new heavy increases are from next year and there is therefore plenty of time to discuss with the Chancellor with a view to the new rates being cancelled.
WRONG!! The final increase may be scheduled for next year but new rates are applicable now. My Rover (nothing ostentatious there, then) is due for tax now and will incur a charge of £400. I have to presume that many other normal family cars will be charged similarly and many motorists will also be getting a nasty shock in the post. This includes cheap but older designed cars such as the Chevrolet range (previously Daewoo).
If the new rates are cancelled (very unlikely) will I receive a refund? In the meantime, am I entitled to some compensation for the drop in residual value of my car due to the high tax level. No answers on postcards please!

Dear Victoria,
I listened with interest to your show yesterday about the governments increase in road tax increases for older car (27th may 08).
The idea that older cars are less green than brand new cars on the face of it makes good sense. But I put it to you and other readers that there is a major floor in this argument and it goes something like this; the energy and the amount of the worlds resources it takes to build a new car are really quite high, I am thinking of the steel and aluminium that has to be manufactured, smelted (heated to great temperatures), all the rubber and plastics that need to be produced, not forgetting battery acids (that can not be cheaply recycled) wire, paint, the transport costs of moving part and completed cars around the world. I am thinking of new mini for example, that has it engines produced in South America, and built in Oxfordshire and not forgetting they sell well in North America so the cars then need to be shipped back across the Atlantic a trip the engines have already completed once. With all this in mind a car built five or ten years ago even a car built twenty or thirty years ago is like a struck match, the power and the energy has already been used to produce it and you cant get it back. I think of my own situation and the car my wife drives, a 1972 VW Beetle, now we look after it service it and normal it flies through its mot a the first opportunity, but if I listened to the government I would think to my self that we should go and buy a brand new 08 plate Beetle from our local VW dealership, but would we really be doing the “green thing” I think not. Cars like every thing else in our society are a fashion item, now I not saying we should all drive round in 36-year-old cars but when it comes to green issues the government seems to take a simplified view, yet there is still no duty paid on aviation fuel. Now the reason for this in my opinion is that they are using the green add gender for there own ends. Tax is charged on new cars not second hand ones. Making the motorist our to be the villain of our time means that we can tax him/ her to the hilt and any one wanting to complain is accused of killing baby polar bears. And not forgetting why the government needs all the tax it can get, I am thinking of the Royal Navy that are getting new war ships, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are not cheap and it looks like our troops will be there for a very long time to come. Trident nuclear subs are due to be taken out of service in the next few decades and are to be replaced the list goes on and on and on. And nothing I have just said in terms of the mod`s needs could be referred to as doing the “green thing”.

closing post offices has resulted surely , in some people using their car more .
Govt makes people use cars more and then punishes them.
