Holby City: Crafting Malick's fake limbs

Prosthetics Designer

Episode 52 saw one of Holby City's most loved characters - Antoine Malick - sustain a severe injury in a road traffic accident.

I'm the head of prosthetics for Holby City and it was my team’s job to make the fake limbs used in that episode. In this video I show the creative process that went into making Malick’s injury look as realistic as possible – under the scrutiny of today’s enormous televisions and HD!

Megan Thomas is head of prosthetics on Holby City. Hannah King, who filmed this interview, is a researcher in BBC TV and iPlayer.

Like A Prayer, the episode featuring Malick’s accident, was on Tuesday, 8 October at 8pm on BBC One and BBC One HD, and 10.35pm on BBC One Scotland. It is available to watch on BBC iPlayer until Tuesday, 15 October.

Holby City continues on Tuesday, 15 October at 8pm on BBC One and BBC One HD, and 11.25pm on BBC One Scotland. For further programme times please see the episode guide.

Love Holby City, fantastic episode, however, I was disappointed that had to happen to Malik
of all people. love him he's great. And I'm sad that he has left the program.
    Will he be back?

How do you get into a profession like that? I am a sculptor and always wanted to make the faces for shops' models, but never found out where to train. Too late for me now but I'm still curious. Are there courses for that?

    Note to Skies 1964.
If you watch the film carefully in slow motion, you will see that the BBC did not make a mistake with Malik's left/right arm. The camera shot is taken over Malik's shoulder into the mirror so of course everything looks reversed. He is in fact using the scissors in his left hand to cut the bandage on his right arm.

Have just finished watching the latest episode of Holby and 13 minutes into the show I picked up that Malick removes the bandage from his left arm, Then 2 minutes later he attempts to re bandage his right arm. Come on BBC get it right which arm is it?
