On tonight’s show we welcomed Evan from The Kabeedies into the studio to fill us in on the Norwich/Woodbridge band’s latest exploits. The sanguine four-piece have been busy in the studio of late and we heard the lead single, ‘Eyes’, from their new album Soap, out on January 23^rd. Our live fix came courtesy of Manchester troubadour Gideon Conn, who provided us with two acoustic tracks recorded for Sean McGinty’s BBC Introducing In Lancashire show.

Short but definitely not sweet, we heard the brilliantly bratty Ramones-inflected punk of Dan Sartain on the track ‘Now Now Now’, which also features Jane Wiedlin from legendary band The Go-Go's. And we have Piney Gir to thank for satisfying our sweet tooth this week with ‘Outta Sight’. Consider us smitten - we can’t resist those sugary harmonies and that George Harrison-esque guitar solo.

There must be something in the water in South Shields if the fragile, elegiac sounds of The Union Choir and Here Comes Good Sailing are anything to go by. Both bands are from the same town in the North-East of England and both are equally adept at masterfully embracing the melancholic.

Recommendations from Ruth Barnes and Bobby Friction are always a treat for the ears and this week’s crop did not disappoint. Ruth’s tip, ‘Ghost Mountain You And Me’ by Thought Forms, is all cascading waves of guitar and splashing cymbals. On the other hand ‘Bung Ho’ by Pakistani-American Desi outfit The Kominas, recommended by Bobby, is a stunning piece of rock ‘n’ roll freak-outery. And this week we saved the best till last - a superb piece of ambient electro called ‘Park’ from Bristol based music producer and apprenctice piano technician Barny Carter. “Listen to more new music” is a pledge unlikely to have been number 1 on many people’s New Year’s resolutions list for 2012. And what a crying shame that is, especially given the many, although unproven, health benefits that come with listening to new music.

Of course, if that promise happened to be top of your list, then BBC Introducing With Tom Robinson should form a vital part of your commitment to new music. For one very simple reason alone- that every artist we play is currently burrowing their own way underneath the radar, with the talent to break out sooner or later.

As evidence, we give you Ellie Goulding, who featured on this very show way before becoming the BBC’s Sound of 2010 and selling over 620 000 copies of her debut album Lights. “Not Following You", a recording Ellie made back in 2009 that has never been released, but can be downloaded for free as part of our two hour New Year Mixtape - available via the podcasts link at bbc.co.uk/6musicintroducing .

Looking forward to 2012, we’ve welcome major new talent Tanya Auclair to the studio to discuss the experiences that helped shape her singular sound. As well as this, we give a first play on the show to Fluke from her current EP Origami.

Another set of musicians sure to grab 2012 by the scruff of the neck - in their own calm and measured way - are Newcastle 6-piece Lanterns On The Lake who we've been playing and supporting since long before they were even a twinkle in Bella Union's eye. Nick Roberts from The Evening Show on BBC Newcastle has given us two acoustic session tracks, each encapsulating the band’s wistful, disarming beauty.

We also have offerings from three emerging artists, Chris Simmons, Evanjack and Little Vegas Lies, who each exhibit a familiar kind of British songwriting that is brooding, expansive and lyrically sincere. Elsewhere, in ‘The Lynx’ by The Kemistry, the swirling, combative MC skills of Abiade are pitted against the forceful vocal tones of frontwoman Kemi, in a song that forces itself upon the listener. And in ‘Contina’ by Trogons, this London 5-piece (beloved of Ruth Barnes) channel the spirit of the B-52’s ‘Rock Lobster’ via sinister garage rock.

Then there’s ‘Broken Brain’, an arresting listen brimming with ideas courtesy of Stalking Horse, the musical project of the Leeds based songwriter known as Wu. The expert production work of James Kenosha, who has also worked with such other Leeds luminaries as Pulled Apart By Horses and Dinosaur Pile Up, is all over this short but ambitious track.

So there you have it - a foolproof way to be sure of keeping at least one of your New Year’s resolutions.

Tanya Auclair was first recommended to Fresh On The Net by the wonderful Ruth Barnes and from the moment of first hearing the opening bars of this song I knew we were in the presence of a major new talent.
