Tom in the studio with Athletes In Paris - whose new single we played yesterday Ahead of Tom playing his favourite picks from the Introducing archive next week, we’ve got one last normal show of 2011 to bring you. However, ‘normal’ is a word we like to avoid at Introducing, given that it is often conjunctive with dullness and drudgery- exactly the opposite of what we offer on Fresh On The Net.

So that’s why on tonight’s show you’ll hear an array of weird and wonderful sounds, right through from Crash & The Bandicoots’ twisted electro-pop on ‘Emily’ to Mount Fabric’s impressive proggy adventurism on ‘Squelettes’.

Taking the biscuit tonight though has to be Mishaped Pearls, who bring a swooning piece of mythical escapism to the table in ‘Creature Of Compromise’, with verses sung in medieval Italian by the beguiling voice of Manuela Schütte.

As esoteric a mix as you’re likely to find on the radio in tonight’s show then- where else are you going to hear a track featuring medieval Italian next to the positively hyper-active Dub Sharma remix of Dhanush’s ‘Why This Kolaveri Di’? (Props to the unfailing brain of Asian Network’s Bobby Friction for recommending that to us).

Other tracks for your gratification include ‘Timber! Timber!’ from Midnight Mile, which inspires equal amounts of joy and despair in our hearts– joy because it’s a superbly strong song but despair because it heralds a, hopefully brief, break in the band’s activities.

Elsewhere there’s ‘Drunk Wine Bluff’, a vintage offering from The Good Rebels, a band out of LA who know exactly how to pillage the classic British rock canon in all the right ways.

And ‘Jellyfish’ a typically irresistible piece of fuzz-drenched garage rock from the Glaswegian three-piece Paws- you can practically smell the sweaty room in which it was no doubt created coming through the speakers. Delicious.

Don’t forget you can catch up on iPlayer via the links on our home page, as well as subscribe to our podcast to get an albums worth of tracks from this weekend’s two terrific shows.

TR with Christmas compilation guests Glenn, Paul and Lynn

Christmas. That means the same old, overplayed songs on the radio then, yes? No! Here at Introducing we’ve come to save you from musical-Groundhog Day, with five superb additions to the genre that strikes equal amounts of fear and joy into the hearts of the nation every December.

“I’ve probably lost all my integrity”, sings Elliott Morris on his wry, spirited Festive offering, “but you can sing this when you decorate your tree”. You certainly can, as well as raise money for Barnardos while you’re at it. And you’d be foolish not to, given Elliot’s songwriting on ‘La La La La La (Christmas Song)’ is as funny as it is accomplished.

Like Elliott, our guests tonight were also hounders of cracking festive tunes as well as charitable donations. We spoke to Paul and Glenn, from the South-Shields band Hollywood & Vines, who orchestrated The Christmas Project in aid of Operation Christmas Child, and Lynn, the great mind behind For Folk’s Sake It’s Christmas, raising money for the Integrated Cancer Centre.

From For Folk’s Sake It’s Christmas we had The Leisure Society’s wonderfully droll ‘Christmas Mistakes’, which paints a familiar for many scene of civil war come the 25th: “the insults fly as cold mince pies rain down from up above / and long before the turkey thaws / we’re battered, bruised and slumped beneath the mistletoe”.

Paul and Glenn gave us ‘Christmas Nights’, their own band’s forage into Yuletide territory. Too many Christmas tunes smack of insincerity but that’s not a criticism you could aim at this song- it’s honest, heartfelt and moving. What more could you ask for?

On a similarly poignant theme, we heard The Narrows’ ‘Santa, Is That You Outside My Window?’, a soulful ballad featuring the classy use of seasonal bells, for once. And if you’ve often thought there should be more guitars that sound like chainsaws in Christmas songs, then Birmingham band Ace Bushy Striptease’s ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ should soundtrack the unwrapping of your presents next week.

But it’s not all about Santa’s big day here at Introducing- we’ve also got plenty more of the best underground tracks from across the world to offer you.

The impervious Luke Barwell (aka Black Dots) takes another step on his long and brilliant musical journey with ‘Diamonds In The Fields’, a song that channels Super Furry Animals via a cowbell driven groove. Meanwhile Lux Lisbon give us their thoughts on the ‘Bullingdon Club’, exactly the kind of politically-charged song you’d expect to come out of a year as turbulent as 2011.

Be sure to download both charity albums via the links above to give your Christmas playlist a much-needed revamp. Believe us, everyone will thank you for it!

Lewis and Samuel from La Shark with Tom Robinson
As 2012 draws ever nearer, the lists for what’s set to be ‘big’ in the coming 12 months are weighing in thick and fast. However, these lists are anything but definitive, and there’s no reason many of the artists played on tonight’s show won’t go on to set 2012 ablaze.

Indeed, the attention grabbing antics of tonight’s guests La Shark will guarantee them notice in 2012 – as anyone who’s heard the opening bars to their single ‘Magazine Cover’, or seen them live - will testify.

Lists aside, this time of year only means one thing. And we certainly know what’ll be on the South London 3 piece Mayors Of Miyazaki dinner table come the 25th, although their raucous track ‘Your Goose Is Cooked’ perhaps won’t be replacing Bing Crosby on the stereo anytime soon. It would, however, be the perfect song to use as a rude awakening for the family from their traditional post-lunch slumber. Enjoy.

We also heard some wry, tuneful rock from Union Starr, some refreshingly DIY post-punk from Totem Terrors, and a truly captivating offering from blossoming French singer-songwriter Léonore Boulanger.

Ruth Barnes dropped by to bring us a wonderful ode to sticky tape from No Cars, whose mysterious eccentricity is quickly becoming their trademark. And Ruth also brought us another faultless recommendation in the dark, moody rock atmospherics of 2:54.

Straight from the horse’s mouth, as they say, the bulk of these tunes are brought to us direct from you via the Recommend link above. So, if you’re still craving a list, look no further than the tracklisting below to hear exactly what’s exciting about new music right now, the best cuts from which can be heard in this week’s podcast.

TRACKLISTING. SUNDAY 11/12/2011

Tom Robinson Tom Robinson | 01:00 UK time, Sunday, 11 December 2011

Arun Sethi with Tom Robinson This week we had the pleasure of welcoming North London-based singer, producer and record label co-founder Arun Sethi into the studio to discuss his latest venture in a long line of musical projects. As the creative director of WotNot Music, Arun is at the forefront of the UK’s IDM and electronic scene, which has provided Fresh On the Net with countless great tunes over the past year.

We spoke to Arun about what it’s like to have his fingers in so many delicious musical pies, as well as the innovation behind WotNot Music’s emphasis on visuals to expand the listening experience. Arun’s also gave us his thoughts on the advantages of working under the moniker Charo.

We heard an exclusive JJ Mumbes remix of Charo’s latest trailblazing single, which has apparently got as many girls swooning on the dancefloor as it has guys dancing. Listening to it, it’s easy to hear why. And for an advent calendar that’ll expand your musical horizons rather than your waistline, be sure to check out the free giveaways on WotNot Music’s facebook wall.

Elsewhere, in our weekly plundering of the 6 Music session vaults, we struck gold with two incredible tracks from the incomparable New England solo artist Merrill Garbus a.k.a. tUnE-yArDs. Never one to shy away from a bit of all-out lunacy, hearing Garbus’ and her band live is nothing short of exhilarating- just listen to the killer horn solos in both songs.

And it was business as usual for us in terms of bringing you the best streaming tracks on the net. Eddy Tourbillion aka singer Edward Ad-Jaye in Croydon, gave us a re-imagining of a old classic with ‘Rain Drops’, making it sound fresher than, well, a drop of rain. And we heard the musical equivalent of burning incense from East London multi-instrumentalist Lodekka, whose blissful electro track ‘Mean Times Pt.2’ caused the studio to reach almost dangerous levels of relaxation.

A few weeks ago Manchester’s Silverclub were quick to tell us that there “ain’t no application” on our laptops to give us soul. And this week Israel five-piece Umlala came to us in a similar state of ICT disarray, asking us how to convert PDF to JPG, via a 3-minute blast of insane electro-punk-rock. We wholly agree with their refrain of “What would I have done without the internet?”, as without the world wide web we probably wouldn’t have heard this piece of barmy brilliance, the like of which Fresh On the Net was made for. And, again thanks to our old friend the internet, you can always listen again on iPlayer via the links on our home page.

Tom Robinson Tom Robinson | 01:00 UK time, Monday, 5 December 2011

We counted ourselves lucky this week to bag a session with acoustic guitar wizard Troy Faid (above) who trekked southward from Leeds, guitar in hand, to perform a few mesmerising tunes for us in the 6 Music studios. A gentle, unassuming performer, Troy blew us away with his musical dexterity and earthy, emotionally charged vocals. No wonder his second album Solus has been attracting consistent praise in the blogosphere.

Our Monday morning tipsters Ruth, Huw and Bobby wove their usual magic, springing some top tracks on us. From Dreama’s brand of alt hip-hop to We Spies’ ambient indie - and the schizophrenic dubstep of Messrs Kamos and Govind Bhachu. It’s all good.

Thanks for Your Support - our chain of musicians recommending musicians- seems to be anchored in the North-East at the moment - though that's fine by us. Romance by This Little Bird, as chosen by Rich from Chased By Wolves, is a glowing reflection on late-night, maudlin boozing. Needless to say, the irresponsible use of alcohol in not endorsed by the BBC or its employees.

Other tunes from the interwebs that caught our fancy this week included the trippy ‘Smile It’s Real’ from another North-East band, Symphonic Pictures, who have yet to release their first EP yet already sound like the Real Deal. The giddy tempo changes of Heartbreak Girl by The Lucid Dream also got pulses racing in our studio. We first played the contemplative triphop-inflected electro of Wonder's Greed Machine two years ago - yet its social message remains more relevant than ever in today's financial climate.

All in all, this was not a show to have missed. But in case you did, you can always listen again on iPlayer via the links on our home page. Better still, subscribe to our podcast to get an albumsworth of thrilling hot-to-trot tracks every week to keep as your very own.

If you're a musician, tonight's show is required listening. Not just as your weekly guide to the best new streaming tunes, but for the wisdom dispensed by music publisher Simon Pursehouse from Sentric Music. Simon (above) talked Tom through his top tips for demo submissions, and on how to optimise a band's Facebook page. His suggestions may not guarantee you a headline festival slot - only your music can do that - but we reckon they'll significantly improved the chances of that music getting heard.

We also heard two exclusive live tracks from friend of the show Jono McCleery, recorded at the launch gig for his stunning second album on Ninja Tune. Tom's long been a fan of Jono's voice, songwriting and guitar playing - and on this record There Is, it now turns out, he also played double bass. Is there no end to the man's talents?

The ever-reliable Bethan Elfyn once again came up with the goods this week, delivering a "wild slice of Welsh pop" from the strangely named Cardiff trio Poket Trez. She does so much more these days than her weekly BBC Wales shows every Saturday that the easiest way to keep tabs on her musical activities is via Twitter @BethanElfyn.

Elsewhere in our emporium of cybersourced sounds, we had boy/girl duo Blue Hand with The Fascinator - a sprawling six minute epic of impassioned Northern vocals building to a dramatic climax. Just imagine the soundtrack to a Wild West movie filmed in Manchester city centre and you won't be far off the mark. Just brilliant.

We also heard a new tune from the singular North-East outfit O’ Messy Life. These former show guests make a terrific alt-rock noise and will be worthy of your close attention in the year ahead. Lead singer David Littlefair's voice teeters on the brink between genius and insanity on Escape Velocity, a song that offers great hooks, noodling solos and the wild eccentric energy that is the band's trademark.

But all this barely scratches the surface of the quality offerings we bring you this and every week. We listend to every single recommendation that comes in through our web page - and if we like it, we play it - simple as that. Click on any of the links in our tracklisting below to hear the songs themselves - there isn't a duff one among them - if there was, we wouldn't play it.

And, musicians, remember - when your music has won you that headline slot on the Pyramid stage at Glasto - don't forget to thank Sentric Simon for helping you get it heard in the first place.
