In the small hours of a Monday morning from 2-3am you can hear a selection of my favourite new tunes compiled into an hour-long mixtape of nonstop music. All the audio is sourced from the BBC Introducing Uploader - some of it recommended by BBC colleagues across the Introducing network, and some discovered via Twitter and my own Fresh On The Net blog.

From 3am each Monday the latest mixtape is then available free via the 6 Music Downloads Page - where you'll also find archived episodes from the previous 4 weeks. All the tracklists and start times for each track are published here - together with a link to each artist's website.  Below are are the listings for Monday, May 21st.

SOCCER 96 - Call To Arms - 0:14
http://www.facebook.com/soccer96band
Somebody once described SOCCER 96 as "Fresh polyrhythmic electro with crisp live virtuoso drums" - oh no, hold on, that was me. The Brighton two-piece describe themselves as "a stripped-down, amped-up analogue synth vs live drum assault, formed in 2009 over a mutual love of SNES, meditation and warehouse raves." Their self-titled debut album was released on Demons Are Real label in March and comes highly recommended. By me.

DREAMA - Opus Opiates - 4:14
http://dreamasreality.com
We were first introduced to the music of Dreama on Fresh On The Net by Girl Music Guru Ruth Barnes. An eighties baby and a nineties child, the Hammersmith-based rapper and emcee wrote her first song at age 12, just for fun. At 16 she embraced MySpace and when her academic studied were copleted her début release was a free mixtape titled A Dreama’s Reality, which has since given its name to her busy and entertaining blog. We've played her repeatedly, Ruth's played her repeatedly, and if you download this week's mixtape you can play her repeatedly too.

THE ADVOCATES - Half a day - 6:41
http://www.facebook.com/theadvocates1
Formed less than a year ago in Northwich - home of The Charlatans - The Advocates are an indie/grunge four piece who recently released their debut EP “Shut Your Eyes and See” which they recorded at 80Hertz studios. Not much more info online except that they consist of Jack Evans on Lead Guitar, Jake Barnabas on Drums, Ste Millar slapping the Bass and Sam O'Brien on vocals and Rhythm Guitar.

SID SINGS - Make Me Howl - 9:34
http://www.sidsings.co.uk
Sid Sings are, they tell us, "a deliciously dark and dirty Blunk-explosion for the True Blood generation. Forget gothic romance, " they urge... "these rock 'n' rollers are true sex Glampires! The band is headed-up by sassy frontwoman, Sid and powered by Alex Michie's turbo-charged guitar-playing and Marco Quarantotto's down and dirty drumming. A combination which has lead critics to describe them as "Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs backed by the early ZZ Top" and "Patti Smith fronting The White Stripes"."

DAN LENO - Bones - 12:16
http://soundcloud.com/dan-leno
DAN LENO are purveyors of "unique 5-piece pop from South London" who list their Band Interests as: "Staying Alive" and their label as StealMyOil Records. Originally known as MUTLEY - and later as DAN LENO & THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEMS - they consist of Che Hawkes, Nicholas Oebell, Sophie Evans, Peter Harris and frontman Raphael Verrion. None of whom, you'll notice, are called Dan... or indeed Leno. You'll find more music - but alas no further factual information about the group - via their Soundcloud page.

SILENT CITIES - All These Winds - 15:39
http://www.facebook.com/silentcitiesuk
For my money, the label "singer-songwriter" all too often provides shelter for musical dullards churning out unoriginal retreads of a genre that reached its peak maybe 40 years ago. And then along comes a Jamie T, a Ray LaMontaigne, a Willie Mason - or a Silent Cities - and they compltely restore your faith in the power of the lone guitar-toting troubadour. This haunting performance completely blew me away when we first heard it at Fresh On The Net. It was uploaded to BBC Introducing by the artist Simon Maddison - born in County Durham, currently studying in Liverpool and destined for great things, should he choose to pursue them once his studies are at an end. It's not a question of chords, lyrics, melody or recording quality it's simply that sometimes you can tell within seconds that you're listening to The Real Deal. And - take it from me - this artist, my friends, is The Real Deal.

FEVER FEVER - The Chair - 18:15
http://soundcloud.com/feverfeveruk
Last Summer FEVER FEVER ("two girls and one boy making art-punk fight-pop from Norwich") played South By Southwest and the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury. Since then their continued ascent has been unstoppable, with triumphs at Camden Crawl and The Great Escape. "Our main priority" they've always claimed "is having fun" which perhaps explains why this latest single has been released on download and strictly limited-edition, erm, pink cassette. It also explains why said cassettes sold out in a heartbeat on advance orders, a full week before the song was even released. They play Washing Machine at The Hunter Club in Bury St Edmunds Rock City on Saturday June 2nd.

HUWIE PRICE - Fright Night - 22:48
http://www.huwieprice.com
With Welsh origins but bred in Leicester, songwriter HUWIE PRICE has been gigging solo for several years, releasing his debut EP 'Sea Air' in 2010 and following it up with 'Folds' last summer. Currently hard at work on his third EP, his Twitter reveals this entire weekend has been set aside for bass parts and vocal harmonies on Track Two - with the hashtag #everysparemomentcounts. As a first taste of what's in store on the new release, Fright Night shows HUWIE taking his game up to a whole new level. Its poised, tense atmosphere and spooky weeping guitar lines were a big hit with readers at FOTN, and deservedly so.

BATTLESHIPS - Turbulence - 25:58

http://www.facebook.com/battleshipsnoise
Confident, widescreen rock with an indie edge from Merseyside - no wonder BATTLESHIPS have been supported by Dave Monks' local BBC Introducing show, given a slot at the Radio One Big Weekend, and picked by Q Magazine as one of their "Top Songs To Download in 2012" alongside the likes of Enter Shikari and Pulled Apart By Horses. Their debut single As Tall As Trees came out last August and Turbulence is the title track of a brand new EP released earlier this month - you can hear and buy it on Bandcamp via their Facebook Page.

MOYA - Lost and Found - 29:45
https://www.facebook.com/moyaofficial
This is a forthcoming single from 21-year old Brighton-based singer Moya due out on June 4th, and it's also the title track of her debut album which follows three weeks later on Four To One Records. Moya released her debut EP late last year, from which the lead track Telling Tales enjoyed regional radio support in the UK. It was followed in January by a cover of Primal Scream's I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have as part of an acoustic EP, sold only at her live shows and via her website. She plays a London show at The Bedford this Tuesday (May 22), followed by Meadowlands Festival (2 June) and the new bands stage at Beach Break Live (June 15).

SILENCE RISES - Feeling Clever - 33:27
http://www.silencerises.com
This new single from Huddersfield 5 piece SILENCE RISES will be released in physical and digital formats on May 29th. Before that you can catch them live opening for The Chevin this Wednesday (May 23rd) at The Cockpit, and in Liverpool with Eyes and Black Hill on Saturday (May 26th) at Mello Mello. Recent highlights have included being invited by David Gedge to open for The Wedding Present and by Tim Burgess (no less) to play the 2011 Friends of Mine Festival. Their biog tells us they "continue to focus their style in to well crafted, hook filled, venue filling music with huge towering bursts which take the listener on a dynamic audio journey" but we won't hold that against them.

WE CUT CORNERS - The Male Mind - 36:48

http://www.wecutcorners.net
WE CUT CORNERS are the Dublin duo of John Duignan and Conall O'Breachain. "We write short songs on drums and guitar" they tell us and indeed - at 3'10" - The Male Mind is one of the two longest tracks on their debut album TODAY I REALISED I COULD GO HOME BACKWARDS - released in Ireland last November. It also includes previous singles Go Easy, The Leopard, and A Pirate's Life - and all tracks can be heard and purchased in lossless audio quality via their website. The band's Twitter feed bears the slogan "all of my demons shimmered in sequins, my angels bored in white". Go figure.

GHOST LAKE - Late Spring Morning Sunlight - 39:55
http://www.facebook.com/GhostLake
Now here's a thing. When sending music to the BBC Introducing uploader a UK postcode is required as part of the submission process, to ensure your local new music show gets to hear about you. So it was a pleasant surprise to find GHOST LAKE's Late Spring Morning Sunlight there - being as its the work of one Henric Wallmark "making Indiepop from the snowrolling landscapes and rainslippery slopes of Northern Sweden". It's the title track of Henric's new 6-track EP - released in March through the Creative Commons Netlabel THEM Records - and features the bass and drumwork of multi-instrumentalist Gunnar Carlén.

BETHANY WEIMERS - William And His Ghost - 43:19
http://www.bethanyweimers.com
London born, Oxford raised alt-folk artist BETHANY finally released her long anticipated debut album HARPSICHORD ROW at the beginning of this month on 1784 Records. She recorded it at home in splendid isolation in the course of last year armed with a single microphone, ProTools, and a vocal booth fashioned from sleeping bags and an upturned couch. Mind you, she did already have a masters degree in composition from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama which probably helped the enterprise on its way. Since we've already played her songs Desire and Silver Moon from said album, it seemed only right to make it a hat trick and include the splendid William And His Ghost on this week's mixtape.

REBECCA MAYES - The Lights - 47:16
http://www.rebeccamayes.com
Rebecca Mayes has curly hair and drinks Rooibos tea. Her favourite instrument is the zither. She had her first big break when one of her songs was used on Charlie Brooker's BBC4 programme, Gameswipe. Her videogame-review album 'The Epic Win' was released in May 2010 and she's been chosen by IC Music - a network of venues across Belgium, France and the UK - as one of a dozen artists who'll get to tour in big venues across Europe. When this track came out as a single on iTunes on May 7th Rebecca asked her fanbase to bombard me with emails requesting the track (see earlier blog post for why this is an extremely bad idea) but we've since kissed and made up. Even though stray emails about the song keep trickling into my inbox even now.

LUX LISBON - Sunflower - 50:58
http://www.luxlisbon.bandcamp.com
Stuart Rook, Lux Lisbon's singer lives in Durham and works in Newcastle. We've been playing their music on 6 Music Introducing shows for four years now, and finally got to meet Stuart when he came in as a guest earlier this year as the old show was coming to an end. They are a 5 piece indie-rock band who met (and recorded their recent debut album 'Your Heart Is A Weapon The Size Of Your Fist) in Nottingham. This year they have played Camden Crawl and Dot to Dot festival and are booked for Bestival 2012. Their selfrecorded and selfreleased album is available on Bandcamp, where this track Sunflower is available as a free download.

ONE MINUTE WANDA - The Process - 54:26
http://oneminutewanda.bandcamp.com
I've been playing tunes by the wilfully obtuse ONE MINUTE WANDA aka JO PERSONA aka artist JO PEARSON since April 2008 ."I could be anyone," she says "but I'm me. I could be anywhere, but I'm here. I make it up as I go along - don't you?" I love the way her eccentric sonic landscapes make no absolutely concession to commerce, and the fact that none of them ever lasts much more than a minute. You can download a wide selection of these lo-fi gems on her bandcamp - I especially recommend Cold Turkey.

DEAR LEADERS - Not Summer - 56:23

http://dearleaders.bandcamp.com
"Formed in Bristol at the tail end of 2009, Dear Leaders meld fragments of electro, surf and ethereal dreampop together using warping synth, clattering drums and spaced-out guitar. Their self-released debut EP 'Not Summer' was written over the course of two years that saw numerous changes and relocations via Burma, Norwich and London. The instrumental title track harks back to simpler times, having morphed from an early bedroom demo into a hypnotic, fully-formed live favourite. Recent collaborations include work with emerging Bristol artist Katy Christianson, with her intricately detailed artwork fronting the screen-printed, hand-made sleeves of the EP and adorning the walls of the recent launch gig at the Hardy Tree Gallery in London." Nuff said.

INTRODUCING MIXTAPE. MONDAY 14/05/2012

Wilful Missing's calling card - front and back views

Below are are the listings for Monday, May 14th:

ANIMAL NOISE - Baddow - 0:14
http://www.facebook.com/animalnoise
Josh Sandifer: Guitar and Vocals, Mickey Bird: Bass and Vocals, Jack Abbott: Drums. Essex-based threesome (Woodbridge), making bruised, battered and beaten acoustic dance. They formed in April '09 and have since become one of the most talked about bands in their area. The band's debut album was released on 2nd March 2012 through Noise Rekords, and is available on itunes and to order from their website.

MAISIE-MAE - The Plight - 4:31
http://maisie-mae.co.uk/
"I'm a 15 year old girl who is from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. I have been playing for a few years and finally decided to make an EP after recording a BBC Introducing Lincolnshire session and being played on BBC 6 Music with Tom Robinson. We recorded it at Grange Farm studios with me on Guitar, Drums and Vocals and Tom Hilson on Mandolin, Harmonica, Guitar and Bass. I am also in a band called Fighting Karma, last year we won Peterborough Youth Battle of The Bands."

HOSHAL PATRICK - My Lady At Low Tide - 7:20
http://www.hoshalpatrick.com
"Hoshal Patrick is a London-based musical duo consisting of Alex Mummery & James Shedden. One day they'd like to be 'better' known as Hoshal Patrick, but for now it's just 'also'. They make eccentric pop music involving giants out at sea, birds flying through space, nonsensical rhyme in 7/8, references to Rosemary's Baby and the occasional soul-singing robot. They're currently working on an EP due for release later in the year in time for the impending apocalypse."

THE OLD GRINDING YOUNG - King Canoe - 11:39
http://soundcloud.com/theoldgrindingyoung
"Two of us used to be in a band called UTE. Tom Robinson and Huw Stevens were very kind to us and played us a few times! have now started this new project with some great musicians ive met along the way. double-bass, woodwind, brass, steel drums and multi part vocals are arranged intricately to add to the narrative style songs - its still quite folky and dark with murder ballads and tales of dark human nature. Black humour still runs most of the way through it all."

ALISTAIR SHEERIN - Take It All - 13:35
http://www.alistairsheerin.com
"With a hairstyle suspiciously similar to that of a young John Lennon, one can already tell that the late Beatle had an impact on the young pop/rock artist Alistair Sheerin. Aiming to pair an upbeat melody with rich lyrics, the young man from Middlesbrough captures the attention of anyone within hearing distance." In September 2011, Alistair Sheerin was invited to London's Animal Farm to record his latest tracks, including this one.

EMMA SHAHEEN - Heart Cries - 16:13
http://www.emmashaheen.com
"I am a singer songwriter born and bred in Leeds. I started out in nu-jazz band Today's Mathematics, and have been solo for a few years now. I've been mainly gigging in the North so far and am excited about my first produced EP (to be released in June) - take a sneak preview of it on my website. Look out for my first video coming soon! Be great if you could say hello on Facebook or Twitter, hope you enjoy it!" The EP launch gig is in Leeds at Musiquarium on June 9th.

MOODY GOWNS - Stepmother - 20:43
http://www.soundcloud.com/moodygowns
"What does it mean to be British? It may well be the double decker buses and Cricket that sum up this fair isle. Kitsch. Harmless. Boring. or... It could be the thug abroad... Flag tattooed to his teeth won’t eat that foreign muck. or... It could be Moody Gowns who champion the wry wit and charm that all of history’s greatest Brits possessed, coupled with light-hearted cynicism. Brought together by one Nathan Moseley back in 2008, Moody Gowns are an abrasive bunch of art-poppers whose goal is to steal the heart of every true music fan on the planet. To date, their discography includes two EPs and a single recorded with James Kenosha." This track is one half of a split 7" with the splendid Bearfoot Beware.

CLOCKWORKRADIO - Feel It Up - 23:12
http://www.clockworkradio.co.uk
Manchester’s Clockwork Radio are one of those bands who don't feel it's important to provide any factual information about themselves online. Or even (see Moody Gowns, above for a first rate example) to share any sense of their mission on earth, or their collective vision. I can only tell you they consist of Richard Williams, Iwan Jones, Nadim Mirshak, Dan Wiebe and Sam Quinn and that they "return this May with a new EP UBUNTU following on from last year’s acoustic flavoured SKETCH EP."

OF ARROWE HILL - Damned - 27:12
http://www.facebook.com/pages/of-Arrowe-Hill/237350516280497
In June 2010 a New York listener recommended a song called "You, The Night & Père Lachaise" which I liked so much we ended up playing it four times that year. The band was OF ARROWE HILL - named for an area of Woodchurch on The Wirral - and formed in London in May 1999. Fans have ranged from John Peel to Julian Cope - and with, rave reviews for their fifth album and a sixth due in Spetember, the whole project - fronted by Adam Easterbrook - has taken on a whole new lease of life. A six minute single 'The Stars Are Against Us' will be released on Ouija Board Records in July 2012.

FICTION - Careful - 29:55
http://www.facebook.com/FictionLondon
Perhaps the most startling band I heard in the whole of 2009 was the London quartet Fiction - who played an electrifying live session on my Friday suppertime show that year. Nick Barrett , Mike Barrett, James Howard and David Miller have recently signed to Moshi Moshi Records and their longawaited debut album is due at the end of the summer. This more conventional single may have been picked by the record company for its supposed "radio-friendliness", but the album will be guaranteed plenty of real bite and originality by their body of earlier work such as Curiosity - their song about, erm… Schoedinger’s cat.

NUDYBRONQUE - Bottled Blonde - 32:56
http://www.nudybronque.co.uk/
"Not just another band with unfashionable hair, Nudybronque are an Indie Pop band formed in the heart of Wiltshire in April 2011. They aim to blend Indie music with elements of 70's Punk, Post-Punk and Britpop and have enjoyed sterling support from Will and Marie at BBC Introducing in Wiltshire." We've come to know Nudybronque through my Fresh On The Net music blog. This is the title track of their second EP and (we're told) Aidan from the band is currently single. Anyone who would like to ask him out for a coffee and slice of sponge cake is welcome to get in touch via their website.

WILFUL MISSING - The Waltz - 35:15
http://wilfulmissing.co.uk
The first of several artists I met the other week at Unconference - part of the Live At Leeds festival. Many of them had demo CDs but were nonplussed by the question "where can I hear your music online and how can I contact you". Most had to borrow a pen and write the information by hand on the back of my lecture notes. But Wilful Missing handed me a small, attractive card with their name, logo, website, email, Twitter and Facebook details (see above). Within minutes I was listening to their music on my smartphone - and it proved every bit as strong as their marketing skills. They've released two EPs (2009‘s Vast Atlantic, and 2010‘s Loose Ends) and this was my favourite song from their debut album MOLEHILLS OUT OF MOUNTAINS which came out in January.

LEESUN - Always That Way - 38:40
http://leesunmusic.com
"I was born to Korean parents who are fairly bonkers which goes a long way towards explaining my music. I like to write and sing about love and how messed up and crazy beautiful life and people are. I live in Leeds which is an amazing place, full of the most amazing talented people. I've been trying to get my music out for a very long time, but am not sure how, even though I've been to quite a few seminars which were supposed to tell me how. I am fairly brilliant at most things, but I guess marketing my music is just not one of those things! And neither is cooking. Or tidying the house." Another fine artist at Unconference the other week.

ANDY DOONAN - The Hell That Heaven Hides - 42:18

http://www.andydoonan.co.uk
Like Wilful Missing, Andy Doonan also handed me a card in Leeds with all his online details - his music too turned out to be semi acoustic, upbeat and memorable. His biog tells us "After having played with chart-topping acts and appearing at the London O2 Arena over the last year, Andy Doonan is making serious waves on the music scene. With a powerful sound that blends melodic acoustic pop, indie, folk and classical, the singer-songwriter has recently received positive reviews from Radio1, Kerrang!, BBC Introducing and various magazines. An accomplished singer, guitarist, and pianist, the 23 year-old’s exciting original songs appeal to a wide audience. A loyal fan base continues to grow significantly through shows at renowned venues all over the UK…" Blimey. So now we know.

DRUNK MULE - I Built A Death Ray - 45:18
http://drunkmule.bandcamp.com
A band we used to enjoy on my old Fresh On The Net shows, Drunk Mule consist - despite the enormous sound they make - of just Rich Morris and Steve Simpson in Glenrothes. "2 lads makin tunes fae Scotland. Been workin the gither for about a year and a half, about to release our first album Crash Test Y'self. Hopefully put a wee smile on yer face, maybe even a dance in yer step." More power to their four elbows.

3 FOOT NINJA - We Are An Army - 48:44
http://3footninja.bandcamp.com
The point of writing a decent band biog is not to tell people how great you are, but how INTERESTING you are - and here, readers, is an object lesson in how to do it:
"We live in the North York Moors
We have written loads of songs
Some of them have been played on BBC York and BBC Tees (Thanks Bob)
We’ve been played on BBC Radio One
We have played songs at loads of gigs
We've played some gigs with really good bands (there's a list further down)
We’ve played some really good venues (there’s a list further down)
Have a listen to our songs
Come to our gigs. We sound like sharp rocks on a big hillside in the blue spring. We sound like a river speeding through a slow carved valley in summertime. We play like the heather on fire in the furious gales of autumn. We play like our songs will turn away the white winter. No one comes from where we come from." You can hear their debut album in its entirety - and support the band by buying it afterwards - via their Bandcamp page.

LYNA GALLIARA - Half - Baked Cherrypicked Hypocrite - 52:39
http://www.lynamusic.com
Lyna Galliara (pronounced Lee-na Gal-ee-ara) was a readers favourite over at Fresh On The Net recently, where Massimo Zeppetelli gave it a rave review last week "It’s like Crystal Castles mixed in with some M.I.A. - a really raw but substantially encapsulating recording and song." Ruth Barnes at The Other Woman Music is also a fan. Otherwise, once again a complete absence of factual information online. "Future Princess of Rock n Roll. I Produce my own stuff. Some of it here. Lots more to come." is all she says on Facebook. However Lyna tells us she will be releasing several free tracks for download in the run up to her debut EP release later this year.

RAVEN BEATS CROW - Golden One - 56:18
http://www.ravenbeatscrow.com
"London's Raven Beats Crow consist of Liam, Sam, Robin and Jon. Their Club Raven events have seen them host gigs in locations as diverse as a reference library and a crypt. Attendees have grown used to coming face to face with red-eyed ravens, hypnotic visual effects and even a robot called Roland. If you see some smartly-dressed chaps with animal heads, that'll be them. Or they could be the illuminated skeletons wandering about. Or the twee gentlemen that look like they've just stepped out of 1934... You never know what you're going to get from these wide-eyed gents with feathers in their hair. Their new 'Dark Matters' EP is a brooding mix of pop sensibilities and electro-psychedelia, born of the dark side of Raven Beats Crow."
