I think that applies equally to The Bearded Wonder. He and the rest of the TMS team have always been more than just commentators - rather, a group of warm, generous, witty friends, who include the listeners in that friendship in the shared enjoyment of the true 'beautiful game'. Very sad. Recall meeting him at Worcester in 1974 for a Gillette match v Notts. I was there unashamedly on the tail coat of a friend who was doing commentary for local media. During a rain break Bill F came inthe box and did an interview. He also took the rip (mercilessly) out of my scrap-paper score sheets that I had been prevailled upon to improvise by my friend. After close of play we wandered into the bar. On seeing us Bill immediately called us over and introduced us to his companion at the bar: Garfield Sobers. That gesture could only come from one with a generous nature. He has been on TMS since my mid-teens. A big chunk of my life. Well played Bill. Straight bat to the end.

For me even funnier than the Johnners "leg over" incident was the loving commentary box mirth that ensued when Fred Trueman knocked a cup of coffee over Bill's scoring book.

Aggers is a pleasant and likeable young man but who are the eccentric and colourful chracters in the next generation? Vic Marks shows distinct signs of eccentrity but who else is there? He has without a doubt managed to get people(including teenagers like me) interested in cricket and deserves his place in cricketing folklore.

Back in the early 80s my village cricket team (Coombe Hill and Boddington CC - near Cheltenham) decided to raise funds for a new pavilion by playing a sponsored 24 hour indoor cricket match. We wrote to Bill and asked if there was any record we could try for. He took the trouble to write back and tell us "No" so we thought no more about it and set off on our efforts some weeks later in Cheltenham's Sports Centre.

I found myself batting after about 20 hours and feeling knackered when all of a sudden the doors to the hall burst open and there was the great man himself with a lady friend in tow. He told us he was "in the area" so thought he'd drop in and see how we were getting on!!

(We later found that being "in the area" actually meant he was travelling back from Manchester to London and had decided to take a 'slight' detour!!!).

Unable to resist the opportunity Bill had soon whipped off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and started bowling to me at a speed which was just a little quicker than the pace we'd got accustomed to over the previous hours - he certainly pecked us all up and gave us a fantastic lift for the final few hours.

Bill was, I believe, an ex County seconds opening bowler, and he subsequently turned out for us in a few games in the following season. He relished I remember the looks on the faces of the opposition as they tried to work out if it was him or not. The sight of Bill racing in to fire down his (occasionally) accurate pace bowling soon convinced them that he knew what he was about.

I recollect one particular ball on an infamous ridged wicket in a remote Cotswold village where his bouncer hit the ridge and cleared batsman, keeper and third man to drop just short of the boundary for what would have been a spectacular 6 byes. I think I was crying with laughter for the next 2 overs as Bill wandered around the field moaning about the inadequacies of our poor keeper.

I had the honour to be MC at our end of season Dinner where Bill regaled us with stories from the commentary box and impersonations of his colleagues.

He was a great guy and I'm proud to have been his friend.

If Sanath Jayasuriya ends up playing in the 2011 World Cup (looks quite likely), will he end up becoming the oldest limited-overs cricketer of all time? If no, then who is the oldest limited-overs cricketer of all time? Could you also provide me with a list of the 10 oldest limited-overs players of all time?

His name and date very precisely written onto a long-forgotten corner of the school fabric! I had also discovered a school cricket match scorecard with his name on it, playing in a match between the school First XI and the Old Boys team. Unfortunately it had not been filled in, but Bill being Bill he had a very clear recollection of how much he scored on that particular occasion, some 50 years earlier.
