Obama seeks business boost with Daley pick
Bill Daley is a banker, a lawyer, a Washington insider and a member of one of the Democrats' most powerful dynasties.
He is the seventh child of Chicago's former mayor Richard Daley, who ran the city in the 1960s and 1970s, and the brother of the current mayor, also Richard Daley.
Bill Daley is one of the political mentors of the man he'll be replacing, Rahm Emanuel, who is running to become Chicago's next mayor just to keep things neat and tidy.
President Barack Obama's critics will focus on this point, claiming that, when in trouble, Mr Daley runs back to the old Chicago machine. But apparently he and the president don't know each other that well.
One of the hold-ups in the announcement seems to have been the need to hold face-to-face sessions to make sure the two are capable of getting along.
The real importance of the appointment is that Bill Daley, an executive of JP Morgan Chase, is well-liked by financiers and those in big business - and Mr Obama needs to mend fences with them.
Mr Daley was also Bill Clinton's commerce secretary and an architect of Nafta (North American Free Trade Agreement) and is still disliked by many unions here. His friends contend he's an operator, and perhaps he's got the job for that reason alone. But it looks like a signal that Mr Obama is tacking to the centre - not worried about what his left wing might say.

The candidate came into office with help from the Left and others, but due to current circumstances President Obama must now be a Centrist. He has no political choice, for these are troubled times. He can swing neither to the hard Left or the hard Right.

Lol...
I guess the White House is going to get that Chicago touch!
But hey, it's not Blago!
And actually, the Daleys are pretty big, here, I mean, they keep getting re-elected, so actually they will probabaly help President Obama a lot...

I was hoping Obama would find an experienced business advisor who (a) didn't want to give all his money away and (b) didn't want the taxpayers to pay for his firm's losses.
And look whom we wind up with -- someone who knows a thing or two about the connection between government jobs and votes. Good luck reducing the government payroll before Obama runs again.

Really? Then why has the Interior Dept been given instructions to change its policies to give itself the authority to designate more public lands as wilderness areas wihout approval from Congress, thereby locking them up from any type of oil or mineral exploration--something the left has been wanting since Obam took office.
Listen to what President Obama says but also watch what he does. He's a lot more canny than people give him credit for and he doesn't always take the most direct path to his goal. His move to the center is mostly for show. He needs to look more centrist in order to work with the new Republican majority in the House but his long term goals haven't changed and are still very left of center.

Keep in mind that baseline for center is different in American politics than those of Europe; what most Europeans would consider centrist would be seen as left of center by most people in the U.S.

An excellent observation. Why would President Obama need to mend fences with Wall Street and big business? Didn't he deliver massive Federal subsidies to shield them from the effects of the economic downturn? Didn't he save bankers and brokers' lucrative bonuses? Didn't he allow "banking reform" to be so watered down as to be largely meaningless?
Sure, he took some good shots at BP, Halliburton and the others involved in the Gulf oil spill but c'mon, that was to be expected in a disaster as big and as well publicized as that one. Democrats like to portray Republicans as as the party which represents the interests of big businesses but they also do a pretty good impression of Santa Claus when it comes to handing out the government goodies to businesses.
To be fair to Mark, I can think of one group of big businesses that President Obama might need to mend fences with: defense contractors. The adminstration has canceled or drastically scaled back purchases of some very large and very lucrative items of defense hardware.
Speaking of which, how many people noticed that although the Obama adminstration had earlier canceled production of the highly capable, and fully operational, F-22 Raptor stealth fighter on the grounds that it was too expensive and instead would buy additional F-35s, today they announced the military was scaling back procurement of the yet to be operational F-35 on the grounds that problems and delays in development have raised the per unit cost by about 50%? Our fighter pilots needn't worry about their jobs though, there's a growing demand for drone pilots in the U.S. military.
By the way, wasn't Britain planning to buy F-35s for use on that new aircraft carrier you have coming? Maybe you should keep those Harriers in storage just in case.

For practical politics and achievement in that realm, Bill Daley, and the more-so his family, have a solid record. To the 'left', this appointment couldn't be any more disheartening than the financial advisers selected at this administration's outset. The 'change' many may have hoped for doesn't seem at the ready, but may begin to come about in the next decade of possible see-saw like recovery/commodity shock economics that may cast 'change' in a more positive light.

A word to the would-be wise about "the centre ground of politics".....it`s not what it`s dressed-up to be!
When the rich and powerful people who run our global capitalist world wanted us to fight wars to make them richer and more powerful.....they re-invented the idea of "democracy" ...complete with two main political parties ...supposedly holding different views and representing different sections of society.
To avoid us realising that all politicians only get the job if they promise to ignore the interests of voters ....and do what the rich and powerful want.. they invented "the centre ground"!
This modern day cure-all linctus is represented to reflect the views of the majority of voters...and we are led to believe that by "moving to the centre" politicians are bending to OUR will...O yeah?
Well you examine the policies and more importantly the behaviour of governments and just see how closely they reflect the views and interests of the "man in the street".....and dwell on that.
My contention is that in Britain and the USA we effectively live in one-party dictatorships run by and for the benefit of rich and powerful people who increasingly don`t even live or pay tax in our nations.

Official "unemployment" is down to 9.4% from 9.8%, and we were only short in creating 22,000 more jobs for the period to stay stable. The unemployment benefits ran out for the 0.4% so Obama's record looks better. If he lets them all run out, he can get "official" unemployment under 1%. (It can be fun to think like Obama.)

Has anyone noticed that of all the suggested cuts none have addressed the taxes for large corporations and how most pay little or no taxes at all. Seems that money is of no interest to the government...need to cut all the social supports of the people...who by the way paid to have such supports. Doesn't an author have copyright over what is written under their name?
To me, changing an author's words is like writing a new book...because its not what the author wrote...
An author's words belong to them and no one should have the power to change it...
Also, this means the book is no longer historically nor copyrightedly accurate...
Would this mean someone could change the words of the Bible because it is not politically correct?
Does this mean from now on ultraliberals and pc people can change any words in conservative books they do not like?

Andrea, I've never heard you speak ill of any cut-throat greedy investment banker before-- is this a new you for a New Year?
I'm not really so sure about your description of Bill Daley, but note in my original post, I described him and his family as having a record of achievement for practical politics and included no words of admiration. But given your anti-regulating heart, I'm surprised you don't have some admiration-- at least for the old man.
Here's a tidbit that always seems to be left out of "The American Experience" and other such television history documentaries:
During the 1970s you probably recall the banner headlines over one city after another deep in the red on the edge of bankruptcy, with NYC itself barely avoiding receivership thanks to a large federal loan. One city remained an exception and in the black: Chicago.
Also during that time, the Nixon Administration Federal Attorney James Thompson was regularly dispatched to Chicago to seek legal redress in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals over Chicago's failure to comply with a multitude of federal regulations, from the EPA, Labor, and other agencies.
As often as Thompson came, his cases would be thrown out of the LaSalle St. court-- time and again. Finally the federal government responded by withholding funds budgeted for the city under the jurisdiction of various departments.
Mayor Richard J. Daley would appear before cameras to announce his was the city that worked and Washington could keep its money and "kiss my Irish arse" (except he never said 'arse').
A few days after one such announcement, Daley even went out to O'Hare to greet the arriving Watergate laden President Nixon. As they shook hands, both men bore grins on the verge of open guffaws.
Soon enough Nixon was gone from the White House, and Daley himself died in the last days of the Ford administration. Chicago's new mayor, Michael Bilandic, complied with all federal laws and regulations and received a lump sum $17 billion from funds previously withheld. Not much more than one year after that, Chicago was no longer the only American city to be in the black- it was in debt just like all the others.
I tell you this tale to help you stay warm on a cold NY winter night. Oh, and your assessment of Obama?--- silly.

No. I have nothing against greedy investment bankers. Just acknowledging what Daley is.
He's a good person for the job, IMO, a much better politician with a lot more business experience than Obama. Indeed. Perhaps claiming (as part of a cover up) that the original translation from Aramaic to Latin or Greek had been incorrect.
Or that the Apostles, being mostly simple uneducated men (none of them had graduated from Harvard), didn't quite get it in the first place.

I don't understand how someone could change an author's words after the author has passed?
Doesn't an author have copyright over what is written under their name?
To me, changing an author's words is like writing a new book...because its not what the author wrote...
An author's words belong to them and no one should have the power to change it...
Also, this means the book is no longer historically nor copyrightedly accurate...
Would this mean someone could change the words of the Bible because it is not politically correct?

"Former home secretary Jack Straw has said some UK Pakistani men see white girls as "easy meat" for sex abuse.
The Blackburn MP was speaking after two Asian men who abused girls in Derby were given indeterminate jail terms.
He said there was a "specific problem" in some areas where Pakistani men "target vulnerable white girls".[...]
Speaking on the BBC's Newsnight programme after the case, Mr Straw said vulnerable white girls were at risk of being targeted by some Asian men.
"The string of convictions in cities such as Rotherham, Preston, Blackburn, Rochdale and now Derby have more often than not involved Asian men, specifically men of Pakistani origin, and mainly Muslim.”
He said: "Pakistanis, let's be clear, are not the only people who commit sexual offences[...]But there is a specific problem which involves Pakistani heritage men... who target vulnerable young white girls.[...]
Mr Straw added:[...] "Pakistani heritage girls are off-limits and they are expected to marry a Pakistani girl from Pakistan, typically," he said.
"So they then seek other avenues and they see these young women, white girls who are vulnerable, some of them in care... who they think are easy meat.
Liaqat and Saddique were the ringleaders of a gang which groomed and abused teenage girls, ranging in age from 12 to 18.
Many of the gang's victims were given alcohol or drugs before being forced to have sex in cars, rented houses or hotels across the Midlands."

Blacks Voting
The 15th Amendment to the Constitution granted African American men the right to vote Although ratified on February 3, 1870, the promise of the 15th Amendment would not be fully realized for almost a century.
Through the use of poll taxes, literacy tests and other means, Southern states were able to effectively disenfranchise African Americans.
Woman Voting
The Nineteenth Amendment (Amendment XIX) to the United States Constitution prohibits each state and the federal government from denying any citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's sex. It was ratified on August 18, 1920.

Amend: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Amend
Both amend and emend mean to improve by correcting or by freeing from error. Amend is the general term, used of any such correction in detail: to amend spelling, punctuation, grammar. Emend usually applies to the correction of a text in the process of editing or preparing for publication; it implies improvement in the sense of greater accuracy, For example: Unlike the nincompoops who have savaged classics novels, he emended the text of the book by restoring the original reading.

If someone changes the words of an author's book and it wasn't the author or with their consent, then that is not what the author wrote, which means it was altered or censored...
Can you imagine Alice in Wonderland without the Mad Hatter or the Red Queen or the Chesire Cat or the White Rabbit?

Well, first off, its historical, written in the context of what that time was...
So changing Mark Twain's words first off is changing history.
Would someone change Lincoln's speeches because they are offensive nowadays using that word?
Maybe some don't like that word, but it was acceptable at that time, so why not ban the word as a swear word in all current and future books, however, this does not give someone the right to rewrite history...
It may be offensive to some, but its historical...it tells us the way our country used to be, regardless of right or wrong, its the true history of America- not censored works which do not reflect who America was...if you change this, history will be lost...
I would think that all kids would want to know the true history of America rather than a censored version which was not the author's actual words...wouldn't you rather know the truth, Bob?
Or would you rather know a politically correct lie?
Second off, there are other references with this word, also...you're talking millions of movies, books, songs...you remember that Bob Dylan song Only a Pawn in the Game, complete Marley?
It had that word in it, also....so will they start censoring some of Bob Dylan's songs, too, because they are too offensive?
Third off, how does it make white and black kids feel to listen to the black rapper songs with those same words?
I mean, really, have you heard the ways they describe whites and blacks?
Why don't they ban the use of the word currently (not past- as I said, I am against rewriting history just because some parts of history is considered 'offensive' to some, I think we all deserve the right to know the truth about our history, offensive to some or not, its the truth) all across in rap songs, ect?
Anyhew, tho, this is the first sign of rewriting/ccensoring history, to make it politically correct...

What's with the Chicago relationships?
Anyway Obama will certainly get the business boost with Daley.
Bill Daley, family member of Chicago’s most legendary mayors, is the the consummate player. A player is different from a politician or even a political operator like Jim Baker (chief of staff under Ronald Reagan).
Daley comes far more gruff. Like Baker, Daley served in the Cabinet (as Commerce secretary under Bill Clinton).
The most relevant job he’s held thus far was Chairman of Al Gore’s presidential campaign. When he took over in 1999, Gore, once the front-runner, had slipped more than 20 points behind Bill Bradley. A year and a half later, Gore was elected president - forgetting about the hanging chads in Florida.
Daley's a lawyer too - a counselor unencumbered by the conventional wisdom. The left will be leery because he engineered the North American Free Trade Agreement, and of course because of his recent work with JP Morgan Chase.
Obama’s connection to the Daleys was Axelrod, who worked over the years in a close relationship with Daley. Daley might be the lubricant between Obama and John Boehner. Obama and Boehner are oil and water' maybe that's why Boehner is crying so much. Daley shares a Midwestern Catholic background with the speaker.
Daley’s appointment bespeaks the dominance of Chicago in Democratic politics. David Axelrod and Jim Messina will run the 2012 Obama campaign from there, the first time in modern memory that a reelection campaign has been based outside the Washington, D.C. With Emanuel likely to be elected mayor this year, the Chicago connection will have been secured.
Daley stands at the union of politics and capitalism, whether at the Amalgamated Bank of Chicago, AT&T, Fannie Mae (where he served on the board until 1997) or at the Commerce Department.
Obama’s own relationship with Daley is not transparent. In mid-2007, Obama fell 30 points behind Hillary Clinton and Bill Daley essentially wrote off the campaign. He told friends Obama had done a great job raising money but he would not become President. He was still a part of the team, even serving as co-chairman of the transition. But he took no administration post and wasn’t in the inner circle. Obama rarely called him, especially after Daley criticized his decision to hold out for a major health-care bill.
But the inner four — Emanuel, Axelrod, Jarrett and interim chief of staff Pete Rouse — all eventually came to see Daley. For months, the White House had been under pressure to hire someone with experience in the business world. The trouble with business executives in government is that they often know little about politics. Bill Daley knows both.

Lucy inquires: "Will they rewrite Thanksgiving next?"
"Merry Christmas!" has been already replaced by "Happy Holiday Season!".
And Bing Crosby "dreaming of the white Christmas" rather than Kwanza..:(

"What we really need is more people thinking like this in the white house"
The term "WHITE House" should be emended as well as clearly non-PC.

You guys really need to do something about gun control.
Any nut-case being able to purchase a gun, is simply unacceptable.
You should have at least a psychological evaluation.
I mean you no longer need to defend yourself against wild indians and out of control buffaloes on the preairy.
You need to get along in croweded cities with a diversity of ideoligies.
If Europe can do it, you can do it.

And the fact that the Rabbit is White speaks for itself. ;-)

The moral of the story...to avoid being taken over by communism while looking for a rabbit on the run?
And in all of this, I wonder what, if any, characters Lewis Caroll felt were similar to himself?
Most authors reveal only want the author wants known, but also I think authors sometimes don't realize they integrate pieces of themself into their literature, too...a book showcases just who and what one is...
My favorite movie version of Alice in Wonderland is still Disney's original animation...
:)
Anyhew, which is why its not right to censor books...because the author may have a hidden underlying that if you take out certain words it no longer makes sense and the pieces to the puzzle are missing, so it will never be solved, as long as the words are not what was written by the author...I know I wrote my first book during the political turmoil of Bush years and although its children's fiction book, perhaps some seeped in...because you can't help but be affected by what time you are living in...
Its like the human body- we just fit together. So does an author's words.
But to take a classic and change it...that means nothing is sacred when it comes to censorship...
