The South East and in particularly Hastings has been kept poor due to very poor political leadership, both locally and nationally. Every MP.since the 1960's has promised better infrastructure to and from the town but nothing has ever happened, they will only listen to the minority who's only thought is for a few bugs that may have to move. With high unemployment and plenty of space, there is no other reason for firms not to locate here.
not sure i understand this map - why are leicester and nottingham on the lincolnshire coast? leics should be in derby's position and derby should be further north
Re 6 They're based on Local Authorities (adjusted for population size), using the 2001 Census data. Looks like counties are shown at District Council level.
What a rubbish explanatory map! Fancy Luton being further north than Coventry! And Nottingham, instead of being 8 miles down the A50 from Derby, is instead on the banks of the North Sea! BBC you'll have to do better than this!
I see that Cumbria doesn't even exist on the map. Maybe the Government doesn't want people to see the high levels of debilitating illness around the Sellafield nuclear plant.........

Nice idea, but maybe a map to scale with insets for densely populated areas would be clearer.
