End confidential donations?

Mark Devenport | 17:58 UK time, Monday, 16 November 2009

The Electoral Commission has just released research which suggests most people want to end the current anonymity granted to political donors here. The current confidentiality provision is due to end in October next year but could be renewed. The people who talked to the Commission didn't seem to be too impressed by the motives of any donors to the local parties. The research found that "overwhelmingly, people thought that private donations and loans from businesses were generally made to buy favours or to influence policy."

    TOO MUCH FAT IN THE ASSEMBLY [not necessarily a bad thing]

    No, not the excessive number of MLAs, but the fact that there are so many puddin' MLAs.

    I mention this issue in light of today's Assembly debate on the Health Committee's inquiry into obesity. Looking at the MLA wasters' waistlines, I reckon about 25% of them are clinically obese.

    Jim Wells declared on this evening's Evening Extra that obese people die about nine years earlier than people who do not suffer from the condition. For me, that's a positive outcome as far as MLAs are concerned.

    Come on all MLAs: eat yourselves to death in your subsidised restaurant.

    Slurp, slurp! Guzzle, guzzle!

    Mark,

    I think it is only fair people who contribute to political parties should have it declared. Most people who give money to parties only do so as it is in their own interests. It must be transparent to ensure no special favours are done for them.

    On the interests of confidentiality Peter Robinson has already demonstrated that he can't hold his water. After all he declared the current Executive has cleared 451 items. These are all small items. What about the big items that the Executive cannot agree on -

    1. Maze Site
    2. Policing and Justice Powers
    3. Poverty Action Plan
    4. Child Poverty
    5. Modernisation Programmes
    6. Mental Health Support
    7. Clostridium Difficile / Hospital infections
    8. Northern Ireland Water
    9. Traffic Calming Measures
    10. Road Infrastructure
    11. Housing Executive
    12. Social Housing Projects
    13. Fuel Duty
    14. Anti-Social Behaviour
    15. Transfer Test
    16. £370m savings
    17. Bain report
    18. Cohesion, Shared, Integration document
    19. Too many MLA's
    20. Too many Government departments

    If I have missed any please let me know.

    THE LIST GOES ON

    - Back pay for lower grade Civil Servants (unlikely to be dealt with satisfactorily because HR Connect are incapable of simple addition).
    - Fiddlin' of expenses (unlikely to be addressed as most MLAs have a vested interest in the continuance of the practice);
    - Abuse of children by religious organisations of all persuasions, most notably Christian Brothers and their collaborating Lay Teachers (unlikely to be tackled seriously because the Assembly is coming down with a preponderance of hypocritical Altar-Lickers and a Children's Commission with no balls);

    Oh, and there's one more item to mention: FAILURE TO GOVERN THE BLOODY COUNTRY!
