Naming the Names

Mark Devenport | 16:03 UK time, Tuesday, 1 September 2009

The Transition Committee looking after our new South Eastern Super Council has invited local school children to come up with a snappier name than its working title which is a bit of a mouthful, "Newry City, Mourne and Down District Council".

Here's a map of the new 11 super councils, due to take over our local government in two years' time. Ignore the existing names, concentrate on the coloured areas and give me any catchy names which come to mind.

    Mark,

Mourne and Down District could be M&D after the play ground. Some folk think our councils are a bug playground anyway. Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon could just be called ABC!!

For the Newry one simply South East Down Council.

The Limavady to Moyle one could be North Coast Council.

The Ballymena and Larne one could be Tight Yins Council. Even they wouldn't complain.

Derry and Strabane could be Wee Donegal Council, think of the tourism spin off.

I notice from the map on the DOE page you linked to that we seem to have lost all our inland waterways. That's pretty careless of the DOE. It also makes some areas look much larger than they really are.

#4 You forget that that new council includes South Armagh and they would not be happy being called Down!

That whole council area just shows what a sectarian carve up the new councils are. Newry and Downpatrick have little in common and the road links between them are poor. Can someone please explain to me what Crossmaglen and Saintfield have in common with each other?

Aunt Abbey seems appropriate for the Antrim and Newtownabbey district council. The assertion of "super" is a bit of a stretch. Antrim Borough Council is currently in deficit to the tune of £1.5 million while double jobbing councillors stand to get £35k for quitting. Our doddering old aunt is seemingly content to shaft the ratepayers and rob them blind.

Here are my suggestions, most of them simply geographic:
    1) North
    2) Ballymena-Larne
    3) South Antrim
    4) Belfast
    5) Strangford Lough
    6) Southeast
    7) Midlands South
    8) Midlands Central
    9) Southwest
    10)Northwest
    11)Lisburn

I see only #11 as controversial as it will favor Lisburn over the other existing council name, if necessary this can be hyphenated as in #2.
