The Lion in Winter

Martina Purdy Martina Purdy | 15:52 UK time, Monday, 9 February 2009

I'm back at last...and so one wonders is the ice age?

The creative people who run the Stormont blog have put up a new image for Stormont today. They used a snow covered image of one of the decorative lions on the front of Parliament Buildings.

Is that a DUP lion frozen over - so soon after Ian Paisley, former leader and First Minister, declared an end to the ice age in north-south relations. It seems the freeze is back - with today's DUP motion demanding a rethink on north-south bodies.

Anyway, speaking of the weather, Sammy Wilson is insisting that climate change is linked to factors such as a the sun and is not man made. So he's not showing a Labour government advert which attempts to encourage fuel efficiency to tackle global warming.

Still he insists is he an environmentalist - perhaps that why he is against the ad? The couple featured, observed one wag, have three kids. Hardly in line with fears of a global population explosion.

    Martina,
I heard Sammy on Good Morning Ulster and several times he pointed out that the Scottish Executive also refused to run the ad, so I guess it's a case of "not myself alone"

On the frozen lion, now that Nelson McCausland is out in the cold again, they can keep each other company outside the comfort of Parliament Buildings where there is so much hot air it must be a serious threat to the ice caps.

If it wasnt so serious what a joke sammy wilson is as a minister. Is this the standard of leadership the dup promised, but perhaps sammy should go back to teaching. P1 would be a reasonable level in my opinion.

I just saw Sammy on the Channel 4 news. His backward views made us all look ridiculous, spouting scientifically discredited articles to try to back himself up.
Can someone put Jim Wells in there instead? I was disgusted.

AHHHH Don't let him go back to teaching where he could really influnence young minds, I am always trying to get my kids to turn the TV and lights off!! At least he really is meaningless in Stormont--lets face it the MLA's can talk and talk all day long but the folks on the hill are making little or no real difference to our lives.

CARAL NI CHIILIN PUTS ADAMS ON THE SPOT

Yesterday's Assembly Sitting and Stormont Live had entertainment galore, thanks to Sinn Fein and the Speaker.

The star turn was Caral Ni Chuilin whose running off at the mouth has put The Great Leader in a very embarrassing position. Her daft complaint to the Speaker about Nelson McCausland's accusations of Adams's involvement in the PIRA has reignited the controversy about a past that Gerry wants buried.

In the Stormont Live studio, Ni Chuilin continued the attack on McCausland and indicated that he would be subject to legal challenge were he to repeat his allegations outside the Chamber. Little did she know that McCausland had done just that in an interview with Jim Fitzpatrick a short time previously.

Adams has long threatened to seek legal redress against anyone making accusations (outside the Chamber) that he was/is a Provo. My bet is that McCausland won't be in court anytime soon, at least not in connection with Adams's past.

Turning to Willie Hay, you couldn't make it up. Hansard cleans up his mangled English for the Official Report but watching him live is a treat. He lacks conviction, displays ignorance of Assembly procedures and clearly cannot make a decision on his feet. He probably doesn't notice that he is patronised by his DUP colleagues and just about tolerated by the other Parties.

I'm not complaining though, it's all great entertainment.

How did Susie pre-empt Martina's latest blogg about Caral Ni Chuilin 'Caught in the web'?

Is that a typo in your headline --Ni Chillin-- cos she certainly is chillin. except for the remarkable resemblance to Marge Simpsons sister - Selma Bouvier.

    Martina,

Susie has hit the nail on the head again. Adams is laughing at Nelson, Nelson is laughing at Adams and they are both laughing at the speaker. It is all well and good for Willie to stand and give his views with standing orders in front of him but when he is challenged he is like a cat in headlights!! Every day members sit and have private conversations, use mobiles and ridicule each other and only once in a while does the speaker do something. It appears that the Paisleys and Robinson's are pulling the speakers strings. After all, the speaker is a DUP man.
