Caught in the web...

Martina Purdy Martina Purdy | 12:50 UK time, Tuesday, 10 February 2009

Sinn Fein's Caral Ni Chuilin and the SDLP's Carmel Hanna clashed on Stormont Live yesterday about appropriate language in the assembly. While Ms Ni Chuilin had successfully complained about Nelson McCausland referring to Gerry Adams having a past in the IRA, Mrs Hanna scoffed at other complaints. The Sinn Fein MLA pointed out that it was wrong tthat other members refer to Provisional Sinn Fein. This apparently was because it was used by unionists to cause offence. But there's a raging debate on Slugger O'Toole about another website that is different from Sinn Fein.ie

The following website uses Provisional Sinn Fein - so which is it? And why is Provisional so upsetting?

PS It appears that this is indeed an old website from the previous assembly.

That would be mark, because the new revisionism going on in SF would mean it would be wrong to say in any sense, that SF was in any way linked to the PIRA.

    Martina,

sinnfein.org hasn't been an official SF website for many years.

When they upgraded the old webmaster took the nick and kept the domain name and website.

SF did threaten legal action over this at one point.

PROVISIONAL SINN FEIN EMBARRASSES CARAL NI CHUILIN ......... AND VICE VERSA

In contrast to Carmel Hanna's civilised demeanour and reasoned arguments, Ni Chuilin came across as bullying, coarse, intimidatory and petulant. No surprise there, given her background.

If memory serves PIRA hasn't existed since Sept. 1970,

they took the name because they had to return the IRA to its roots, once they thought that was done, (deciding this for themselves of course) they dropped the ad lib parts

they became the real IRA before the Real IRA. It was after the shoot-up at St. Matthew's and after the Falls curfew, when the evil Brits ( in our script) did their wreck the Kasbah routine a la Algeria.
