Role Model for the Young

Mark Devenport | 12:03 UK time, Thursday, 18 December 2008

The Education Minister, Caitriona Ruane, was presenting prizes at St Colm's High School in Twinbrook this week. During a lengthy speech she expressed sadness that the film about the Irish Civil War "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" had drawn criticism. Exhorting the pupils to do their best, she said people should be thankful to Bobby Sands for paving the way towards a better future for young people. There was a local connection as the IRA hunger striker lived in Twinbrook from the age of 18, so I presume the speech was not a single transferable one which the minister will use at all secondary schools here.

    What a load of rubbish!

We could do without the Minister for Education glorifying a man who sought to put people in their graves (men, women and children) simply because they disagreed with his political ideals.

A scumbag terrorist is not a role model for anyone. The Minister needs to wise up and shut up!

Every time she opens her mouth I think, "what an idiot."

Hopefully none of the young people of Twinbrooke think it's a good idea to swap your clothes for a blanket, spread your own dirt all over the walls, and starve yourself to death for nothing in particular.

(Unless you want your picture painted on the gable end of a house, of course).

The speech given by Caitriona Ruane at St Colm's in Twinbrook is ironic given the burial today of one of the SF?IRA "disappeared".

Was her non-transferable speech actually her own political suicide note to allow John O'Dowd to ease into the education role?

Doesn't this just show how stupid some politicians can be? Good God! It's like the Iris Robinson thing- if you have opinions like this, you keep them to yourself; you don't air them in public. Why? This happens.

Having said that, I don't care if she gets hauled over the coals but I hope she does; she's an idiot. She can't even make a decision on what will replace the 11+, for Christ's sake.

For Christ's sake, I can't believe it's ok to say for Christ's sake, but you can't slag off Bobby Sands. For Christ's sake.
