The cost of withdrawal

Mark Devenport | 16:23 UK time, Friday, 17 October 2008

I was away in London yesterday hence the gap in blogging. I return to find that the British are withdrawing, but Sinn Fein is complaining about it. I am referring to the rates rebates being paid by Derry and Limavady Councils to the MoD. With Limavady facing a bill of nearly £400,000 out of the million pound rates rebate even local unionists like David McClarty are expressing their concern.

It reminds me a bit of a line from an old Marie Jones' play "Mister, I'm not in favour of a United Ireland. I couldn't afford it."

I'm not in favour of a united Ireland either. Those southerners are far too violent.

I don't like the idea of my tax euros being diverted to deal with the INLA, or the likes of the 14-year old who appeared in court in Limerick yesterday having told Garda at his arrest that he shot the sawn-off with his left hand, but normally shoots with his right hand.

Okay you lot in the six counties are used to living off the handouts from westminister but I am confident that with a bit of tough love we could wean ye from this sad begging bowl existence.Every now and then a new partner has to tell you of the error of your ways and give some encouragement. In the new Ireland ye will have to pull your weight,ye know that it will be good for ye in the long term.

For someone who calls themselves Paisley's nemesis, you use the biblical 'ye' an awful lot.

However, in every instance thou hast used it incorrectly.

It should be 'wean thee', 'ye shall', 'ye knowest' and 'good for thee'.

Or are you a character from Father Ted?

    Thank you for the advice.
I normally use just "you" but always feels it lacks inclusiveness(too singular)
This time I decided to go with "YE" and have been chastised for my efforts, probably deservedly so.
Even though I am chastened I still stand by the thrust of my post.

I think a United Ireland would be bad for the people of N. Ireland. What would Sinn Fein suggest for all the hundreds of thousands of people who get paid by the English Chancellor? What about their mortgages, cars and savings? Also would the people from the Republic of Ireland want us? I dont think so for one second.

We have the desire of an unappreciated (or is that unfancied) boyfriend that fears he will never be the one.Sure you must have the save nervous uncertainties about your love affair with that sometimes uncaring mainland yourselves. You see yet another little ache that we both endure.

Unionists have never seemed to understand the desire in the nationalist pscyhe to reunite the country. This may be because they fear too that they have too much to lose if it were to happen.
Sometimes though in a humerous manner Unionists suggest that if we were to see the error of our ways(i;e; rejoin the union) they would be willing to give it another go.

For whatever reason nationalists do still have a twinkle for our exgirlfriend or is it that we have come to enjoy the rejection.Like it or not we show no signs of moving on from this unrequited love.
