More politics than ever!

Martina Purdy | 17:54 UK time, Thursday, 30 October 2008

BBC Northern Ireland is launching a new development this evening in our political coverage. We are going to feature party political broadcasts to mark each of the four main parties' annual conferences. The Ulster Unionists would have been the first in line but the party re-scheduled its conference this month. So it's the DUP who will be making the first broadcast. That is tonight at five to seven on BBC One, and on BBC Two at 11.20.

Don't forget the popcorn!

And expect some unprecedented live coverage this weekend of the DUP conference. Mark Devenport, the political editor, will be back with his blog tomorrow - and has all the details.

Thanks for your patronage during my blogsitting this week. Ta ta.

In anticipation of an Irish Language Act here is one for Gregory to respond to at the DUP conference:

No doubt education will be on the agenda so perhaps one of the DUP's multi lingual members will make the following observation about SF's Education Minister:

'ey daes naethin but santer, thon bodie, hi

And just like that, you are gone. Weep. It just seemed like a fleeting moment. Sigh. I will always remember this beautiful week past. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Martina.

Even though the dusk no longer tarries and the air carries a chill, you have warmed my heart, perfect princess.

    You puked yet Susie?

At the beginning of the week I recommended that you "be firm" with RJ in order to curtail his childish attempts to gain your favour. Looking at Post 2, it's obvious that you haven't been firm enough. Clearly, RJ needs discipline so I suggest that you take a more robust stance during future blogsits. You will have your own ideas but I feel you might be able to draw some inspiration from this article.

Next time, Martina, I want to hear the crack of your whip.

PS: I would question the propriety of your having party political broadcasts to mark parties' annual conferences (triennial in the DUP's case). It's akin to giving them free advertising and is particularly inappropriate when the Executive has been moribund for five months.

    Mark,

I would like to say that by showing this conference and others in full is a total waste of time and our taxpayer?s money. Why reward an incompetent bunch of people? Each party leader will attack the other parties and say how great they are. It is so predictable. Why not broadcast it at 8pm on a Monday and Friday night and 7.30pm on a Tuesday and Thursday night?

PS Any plans to show Jim Allister's conference? I can?t wait to hear him talking about his expenses!!
