Belfast's Boris?

Mark Devenport | 13:46 UK time, Wednesday, 23 April 2008

As reported on today's Talkback, the Greens have come out in favour of the idea of Belfast having a directly elected Mayor. Their Holywood representative John Barry says "many cities in the world already have a directly elected Mayor with real powers to improve the delivery of services. People living in New York , Barcelona and London have seen major improvements in the way their cities are run as a result of directly elected Mayors. I am looking forward to the day when citizens of Belfast get the opportunity to elect a Mayor who will be accountable for the delivery of the good quality public services that we deserve."

All of which raises the question, who could be our Ken, and does Belfast have a Boris?

    Interesting idea, but considering Belfast is in Northern Ireland then a number of issues probably arise .... namely;

    Two joint post holders?

    Names: First Mayor and deputy First Mayor or, First Mayor and Deputy First Mayor with the crucial capital D?

    Should we have a Mayor in the first place? Should it be rotated annually, monthly, weekly, daily our hourly?

    Does Sammy Wilson's lack of blonde hair rule him out for becoming Belfast's Boris?

    Could Alex Maskey rival Red Red? Would he have to start collecting newts to qualify?

    All show and no substance? You mean like the Irish Language Act, the Maze Stadium and Catriona Ruane?

    We have our very own Boris in the shape of Jim Rodgers!!! I think it would be a good idea to vote in someone who was going to work for the city and promote N. Ireland. All over Belfast there are problems of all types and what we need is someone is educated and has a proven record of bringing results. Who do we want??? You Mark!!!!!!

    I think you are a thousand miles off the mark there...

    I'm not sure that it would be worth the cost of having a directly elected Mayor for Belfast, and there are probably few grounds for comparison that I am aware of between New York and Belfast.

    What a threat to the established parties if the majority decided to elect an independant who had the resources to do the job.
