Stuck in Istanbul
Our departure has been further delayed now by a mysterious development - the motor on the captain's chair on our charter plane is reported to be broken. Much hilarity in Istanbul - parts are being flown by F-16 from London. (I made that up - at least the F-16 bit...)
Nobody here knows why a captain's chair has a motor - are there any pilots reading the blog?
Some reporters are demanding a per diem. Others are hoping to stay and become Ritz-based local reporters...

"the motor on the captain's chair on our charter plane is reported to be broken"
Did all that Obama-induced drool from the press pack slosh forward into the cockpit and cause the chair to break somehow?
Complain about this comment
Justin, with the autopilot on board there is little for the captain to do. So they like to spin their chairs around, going 'wheeee'. This gets a little tiring after 15 minutes or so, so a motorised chair takes the effort out of it.
Hope this helps.

Justin, now that the Republican Senator who lost his seat due to alleged corruption has now been proven innocent, will you finally blog on it?, the judge said that in 25 years he has never come across such disgraceful tactics by the prosecution, indeed he has ordered criminal charges against the prosecution team.
You blogged on his conviction, so can I expect you to blog on his conviction being overturned?.
Complain about this comment
It could be much worse Justin. I had a similar experience many years ago while flying back from Ascension Island on a C-141. The pilot reported mechanical problems and we had to land at the SAC base in Ramey, PR. After some deliberations it was decided that we would have to spend the night on the island. The next morning a crew member had to fetch the pilot who had spent the night at his girlfriend's house and was MIA. I suspect the tool used to correct the mechanical problems was a roto rooter!
In the meantime, enjoy the Turkish coffee! Have a nice flight home unless, of course, there are no more unscheduled detours in which case you may have to enjoy dates and yoghurt...

Rustigjongns (#6) "now that the Republican Senator who lost his seat due to alleged corruption has now been proven innocent ... "
Senator Stevens has not been "proven innocent." His conviction has been overturned due to prosecutorial misconduct. It is unlikely he will be retried, so he will remain unconvicted, but it is not the same as being exonerated.
Complain about this comment
Gary, very true. But does it not also mean that he is found not guilty?
Complain about this comment
seanspa (#9), no, it does not. The jury verdict has been annulled, not replaced. His situation is the same as before he was indicted, since the indictment was also thrown out. If the verdict was dismissed "with prejudice," that would mean that he could not be tried again, which could be interpreted as meaning that there is not sufficient evidence (the new evidence being taken into account) to convict, or, alternatively, merely that the nature of the charges does not warrant a second trial. I have not read whether or not the indictment and verdict were dismissed "with prejudice."
Occasionally, a court will find that a defendant is "factually innocent," which is exoneration. I have not read that that is the case here.
Complain about this comment
seanspa (#9), upon further investigation, I have found that the judge dismissed the case "with prejudice" as requested by the Justice Department, so Stevens cannot be retried on these charges. In the court of public opinion, we are all free to think whatever we like about the man.
Lots of people think that politicians as a class are liars and thieves, whether indicted or not. As for me, I have no opinion on Stevens, beyond thinking it was time for him to retire anyway.

I am not going to say Stevens is innocent but there are others who may have done worse currently sitting in congress.
But this was a politically motivated prosection to get rid of Steevens and although nothing will be done I have contacted my Senators to urge the Senator currently sitting to resign. There is no way Stevens would have lost otherwise.
But I remember a former cabinent member after being found innocent in a similar trial asking"Where could he go to get his reputation back?"

If you ever left the lavish confines of the unreal world of the Ritz's for a moment and did some serious reporting on the real problems ordinary people face every day, it might prove a sobering corrective to the intoxication with the Obama myths. Evidently the demonstrations at the G20 conclave in London didn't penetrate the sedate salons of the Ritz. Nor do the human rights violations in Turkey matter as much as some pilot's seat cushion. And the "hilarity" of F-16's is lost on Palestinians and Afghani who are still waiting for their reservations at the Ritz until their bombed-out homes are rebuilt.

@11: Considering that the DoJ requested that the case be dismissed with prejudice, it's a pretty clear indication that they believed they got what they wanted. Since what they wanted was obviously not Stevens' punishment (because they asked for dismissal with prejudice) then either they knew he was innocent (which would have been egregious prosecutorial misconduct) or they knew they couldn't prove their case (same thing before our laws) or they just wanted him out of office (which may go beyond misconduct to something else). Any one fo the three is beyond the pale in my opinion.
@all: This is another example of our country trashing the rule of law (one of the two principles, along with the consent of the governed, that allows our government to operate). It makes me wonder if anyone in leadership even wonders any more how those of us on the outside react to their behavior. It's almost like they only focus on either impressing each other or on playing gotcha with each other, and our purpose in all this is only to pour more money in their jars so they can play longer.
In any case, here's hoping the prosecution team is sentenced to (a) being disbarred for life, (b) prohibited from ever interacting with any level of government as an employee, a contractor, a consultant, or a lobbyist, and (c) sentenced to picking up trash on the side of the road or mopping floors in Federal buildings for the next 10 years on Saturdays. I see no reason for my tax dollars to pay for their housing or upkeep, so no jail time; they can instead retrain and work a real regular Monday-Friday job, like the rest of us.

arclightt (#19), I don't agree with your analysis. Remember that the prosecution was undertaken by the previous administration. It was a Republican administration prosecuting a Republican Senator. It does not seem likely that it was a merely political investigation; it is more likely that they believed the case warranted prosecution. Why it was mishandled so badly is a matter under investigation, and I don't think it is helpful to speculate. If individuals are found to have acted improperly, there are remedies which can be applied, including disbarment if appropriate.
As for the request by the Justice Department, under a new Attorney General, to dismiss with prejudice "in the interests of justice," all it means is that the Attorney General believes the conviction is tainted and that it cannot be reprosecuted. It does not mean that he believes that Stevens would have been found guilty or not guilty had the case been handled properly from the beginning.
Attorney General Holder has no stake in this case. He wants to get rid of it, and he wants to clean up his department.

Heard on the news that a judge has dismissed all charges, which I believe in effect turns back the clock as if it never happened - no trial, no conviction - so I think that pretty much declares him "legally innocent" since he has by the judge's decision not only not been proved guilty but not been charged. But, oy, what a mess. I think he was guilty at the very least of stupidity and naivete, but wondered all along about the conveniently missing witness.
Complain about this comment
bere54 (#24), I don't think there is any such term as "legally innocent." It is correct that his status is back where it was before the indictment, except that he cannot be reindicted on the same charges.
An interesting question at this point is whether there is any merit in the argument that the new Senator ought to resign so that a new election can be held without the cloud of conviction over Steven's head. The Republicans want this, of course, but it was a Republican administration which prosecuted Stevens.
Complain about this comment
Gary_A_Hill, no matter your personal dislike for republicans the man has been found innocent, how can you interpret the Judges freely available judgement as proving that Mr Stevens is not innocent?.
Your final argument is obviously an attempt at misdirection, tell me would you prefer innocent people to go to jail just because their political views do not match your own?.

25, Gary - "I don't think there is any such term as "legally innocent."
A person is legally innocent until legally convicted, but no, it is not a legal term -- that's why I put it in quotes, meaning that he is considered (by the law) as innocent as anyone else is who has not been charged with and convicted of a crime -- the old innocent-until-proved-guilty thing.
Complain about this comment
26, Rust -
Stevens has not been "found innocent." His conviction has been overturned and the charges dismissed (not due to proof of innocence but rather to prosecutorial malfeasance), so he is no longer guilty. Therefore he is innocent (see my comment 28) but he has not been found innocent by a jury verdict. There is a difference. In other words, he is not liable under the law but he has not been acquitted of the charges. It's more like the charges were never made.
The law is a strange animal.
Complain about this comment
bere54 (#28), our disagreement is only over nuances of English usage. Whether a person is "innocent" or not is a question of fact. Our legal system presumes that a person is innocent until proven guilty to a particular standard. A person can be found "not guilty" even when they are not, in fact, innocent.
Sometimes a person will be exonerated after being a suspect, or even convicted, and will be declared "factually innocent." This normally applies when the wrong person has been charged with a crime, and it does not really apply in Stevens' case. There is no question of Stevens being the right person, but it is a matter of judgment whether anything he did constitutes a crime. That judgment ultimately is one for a jury, and even though a jury declared him guilty, he is now and will remain unconvicted (and unindicted) because the judgment and indictment were vacated and he cannot be retried.
I just don't find the term "legally innocent" to be helpful. Call me a quibbler, if you like.

A little tidbit I was taught in journalism class lo those many years ago:
Since a jury verdict is either "guilty" or "not guilty" (but never "innocent'), the "found innocent" expression is a journalism one, and the reason for that is to prevent errors (huge libelous errors), because if the "not" in "not guilty" were accidentally left out of a headline there could be big trouble.
I find it interesting that the law never declares anyone to be "innocent." (Except before trial.) They are only declared to be "not guilty," which is almost like saying "not proved."
So my term should have been "legally not guilty." Which under these circumstances does not clear his name in the same way a jury verdict would have. And even a jury verdict does not alway clear one in the eyes of the public, i.e., O.J. Simpson.
If it is the adverb "legally" you quibble with, I can't help that. He has been legally cleared of the charges.

bere54 (#33) "If it is the adverb "legally" you quibble with, I can't help that. He has been legally cleared of the charges."
No, it is more your use of "innocent," and especially in conjuction with "legally" to create an unhelpful term "legally innocent" to which I object. The encyclopedia article to which I linked covers the notion of presumption of innocence pretty well, I think, and I will leave it at that.

The journalistic angle is interesting, but it seems to me that "acquitted" is the term best used, because it refers to a finding of not guilty, rather than to actual guilt or innocence.
Complain about this comment

Either one, we were told, was preferable over "not guilty" for reporting purposes, but for some reason "found innocent" seemed preferable over "acquitted," though I agree with you. Perhaps it was thought that "acquitted" was more difficult for the reading public to understand back then. That was, of course, way back before the advent and popularity of legal dramas on TV, except of course for Perry Mason.

I find it fascinating the backwards and forwards over the Steven's case. It seems clear that the message is that he was not cleared on a mere technicality. The question arises were the prosecutors just inept or did they have an ulterior motive. Remember that in the last 8 years it seems that lot of people were put into jobs (remember the Justice Department scandal) because of their politics not their skills, and so the former is quite possible. If the latter, and as the prosecutors were Republican it will be very interesting to know their motives.

@22 (Gary A Hill): I wondered as I wrote that why an R administration would go after an R senator unless they thought there was something there.
Accepting, however, at face value the current AJ's decision not to retry the charges, then either (a) the current AJ saw that the charges were not true or (b) he saw that they were unprovable. In either case, the previous AJ and prosecution team should have seen the same thing. The fact that they chose not to (combined with the judge's investigation into prosecutorial misconduct) suggests pretty strongly that the senator was wrongly tried in the first place.
Note that this doesn't determine whether the senator did things that were unethical or immoral, or he did not. From what came out, it seems to me that he was crowding the ethical line, at the very least; however, that's sadly all too common across all levels of government, not just the Congress, the White House, the Ds, or the Rs.
Regards to all.
Complain about this comment
arclightt (#41), neither (a), nor (b) is correct. The case was dropped by the current AJ because of defects in the prosecution which would have come out during appeals.
I don't agree that Senator Stevens was wrongly tried, I believe that the prosecution was improperly handled. We don't know whether a proper prosecution would have resulted in a different verdict.

I thought you were talking about chickens, but did not know you had any, now I do.

Timewaits and bere were commenting earlier about the use of the term of endearment "Darling", and how they did not find it offensive.
I have noticed that waitresses in many diners have begun using the old endearments once again. Hon, Honey, Darling, Sweetie, etc.; are being used as they once were by those Darlings of the Diners. I find it fun and refreshing, especially since they enjoy endearments returned to them.
I find that Darling, Gorgeous, Good-looking, Beautiful; are always well received in return. My mug of joe is always kept well warmed and it opens the door for delightful banter in the diners where this revival of once taboo endearments are allowed.

Aqua, I too have been following the case. It seems odd that the charges have escalated from buying alcohol, through working without a press card (which the iranians removed), to spying. In the light of a lack of details on the spying charges, it's impossible to even guess whether there is any substance. We can only hope that she gets treated fairly.
Whatever the facts, the case is not going to help improve US/Iranian relations.

Aqua .. I would think her innocent but a journalist has to be careful in foreign lands, maybe she was spying. It is not as if the US has not got spies there.
She is now getting a trial. (as with the USA "whatever that means" does come to mind)
And it did not take as long as some of those at Gitmo.
I suspect Iran wishes to make this point.
Not defending anyone here. just daring to give an answer.
I hope she is allowed a fair trial.
but I wish that for all that face trial.

happylaze - I don't mind at all your speaking for me at #367 on the thread-gone-wrong. You expressed my sentiments. And I like your string of one word comments on comments; not only succinct but says all that needs to be said. Eliminate needless words! per Strunk and White. If everybody simply responded "tosh" perhaps those boring diatribes would dwindle away.

89 1 lonely bantie that insists on trying to hatch several times a year.
She had no eggs under her until 21 days ago and has been sitting since early Jan.
We got worried she'd never quit sitting so we got a couple of fertilised eggs from a friend and stuck them under her. Last year she had two 'Anaconda ' chicks -twice her size in no time.
She's the perfect chicken for someone who wants to rear chicken. We don't just a few eggs here and there.

publius, our diner waitresses don't use regular diner endearments. Maybe it's the reserved New Englander thing. Except there's one down the highway a piece where the waitress always calls me "hon." I only go in there when I'm delivering someone to the train but she always remembers me.

Hhhmmm not sure about some of those terms! Not for me anyway. Living where I do and having a real (as in, not faked) charming Frenchman call me, "ma chere" should do it! Or almost anything they say! I'm really letting out trade secret here. But, none of you are French, so I'm safe. Two men I know with the same name (neither one my husband) puts an "ie" on the end of my name and I find that appealing. Maybe I should suggest my husband try! but really why should he require my helpful hints.

"Tosh" I agree. I suggested the silent treatment but maybe men are not capable of it.

I have friends here who had some bantams and something came along night after night and ate them all. So sad. Not for me; I cannot get attached to chickens, having once worked with great hordes of the stupid things. But my friends were sad.
Once when I was house-sitting for these friends, the chickens massed together and menaced me until I gave them an extra feeding. They actually herded me towards the barn. I was in fear for my life.

Very sad news: Hallmark is cutting hundreds of jobs. Wonder if this means people's taste is improving. Will the people who turn perfectly decent songs into elevator music be next?

We had a Bantie hen like that we called her "Little Mama." She was a great setter and a good mom. She even hatched two duck eggs for us once.

Thanks for responding to my questions re: Roxana Saberi. I also hope she gets a fair trial and does not become a ring in a political ring toss.
A waitress at our local diner calls us "my old sweeties." We always tip well on the rare occasions that we visit. I think that is why she remembers us.

Thanks to all others who are sharing the good news of my sister.
The Kid Sister
My eldest sister returned home from college for summer break and bought a new electric typewriter to replace her old manual, portable typewriter which she gave to Kid Sister to play with; telling Kid Sister that if she learned to use proper typing techniques the eldest would let her use her new electic typewriter.
At age seven, Kid Sister rode her bicycle into town; checked out a typing manual from the town library; sat down to the little manual typewriter and began typing from the Junior Encyclopedia Britanica, starting at letter "A".
I seemed to be the only one in the family paying any attention to the progress Kid Sister was making with her typing skills (I doted on Kid Sister). I was supplying her with reams of paper and new typing ribbons whenever she ran low. I also proof-read her copy. Kid Sister was up to the letter "L" when I showed Eldest Sister the huge stack of typed pages and asked her when she was going to fulfill her end of the deal. Eldest Sister was amazed, and granted access to her electric typewriter. Kid Sister was typing at a blazing 175+ wpm on the manual typewriter by then. The electric typewriter allowed her to increase her wpm to 200+ in no time.
Eldest Sister had transfered to a nearby Community College to save money on tuition and live at home. Kid Sister went on to finish her typing of the JEB by the end of the year. Kid Sister had truly gained encyclopedia knowledge from her passion to learn typing.

She is thrilled to be going back to work. She's a dedicated nurse, and loves her job. The hospital did not pressure her to return. I know many companies do force people into returning to work before they have recovered enough to handle tasks. The company I retired from was one of them.

Having grown-up on eggs from free-range chickens, I still look at the pale yolks and paper-thin shells from a "factory" operation with distain. Best eggs still come from chickens that get to peck in the cow pies. We always raised Rhode Island Reds.

Just visited the other thread and I admire your perseverance and your intestinal fortitude.
I see that the Red Cross is now being castigated. I have personally witnessed the work these good folk do so was tempted to wade in with my pittance but discretion being a better part of valor for me I have returned here instead.
