The business of the Democrat's America is employing their friends, family and toadies. Look at the Blagojevich fiasco. He tried to sell the empty Obama senate seat. Not smart. Bad business. Don't sell it, "gift" it for future services and favors. Just like the Clinton seat. You'll make way more money and not go to jail.
Justin, you have put your finger on why America will survive the latest batch of trouble which we have created for ourselves. It's this kitsch which is the lifeblood of our culture that shall enable us to ride out the times ahead.

President-elect Obama is a real breath of fresh air. He will restore America's rightful place in the world with sound, pragmatic policies. I've come across this interesting article by Dmitry Orlov who compares the experiences of the Soviet collapse to the current problems. A frightening read. He says there are five stages of collapse and I would guess we are in the middle of stage two (commercial collapse; the first being financial). The next stage is political collapse, followed by social, and then cultural collapse (though not necessarily in that order). His arguments seem fantasy, but collapses are not normally predicted I suppose.
Orlov previously wrote about the USSR being better prepared for collapse than the US; what he termed closing the collapse gap.
We are in serious fiscal and economic trouble, but to suggest that the USA may be on the verge of social and cultural collapse is an exaggeration.
It is also important to consider that our economy is so large that even a Great Depression is highly unlikely. I expect our economy to recover within the next two years, particularly if both parties and corporate America decide to set aside their political and business agendae and work together as Americans rather than irresponsible partisans or greedy businessmen.
"The Industrial Revolution made us precariously dependent on nature's dwindling legacy of non-renewable resources, even though we did not at first recognize this fact. Many major events of modern history were unforeseen results of actions taken with inadequate awareness of ecological mechanisms. Peoples and governments never intended some of the outcomes their actions would incur.
To see where we are now headed, when our destiny has departed so radically from our aspirations, we must examine some historic indices that point to the conclusion that even the concept of succession (as explored in previous chapters) understates the ultimate consequences of our own exuberance. We can begin by taking a fresh look at the Great Depression of the 1930s, an episode people saw largely in the shallower terms of economics and politics when they were living through it. [1] From an ecologically informed perspective, what else can we now see in it?
The Great Depression, looked at ecologically, was a preview of the fate toward which mankind has been drawn by the kinds of progress that have depended on consuming exhaustible resources. We need to see why it was not recognized for the preview it was; this will help us to grasp at last the meaning missed earlier...."
"It is also important to consider that our economy is so large that even a Great Depression is highly unlikely."
I'd be interested if you could explain the logic of this statement. It seems to me that the size of our economy (and its global scope) is actually a major factor in its instability and danger of collapse....I commend Clive Ponting's "A Green History of the World" to one and all.
""All these states [the Sumerian states of Kish, Uruk, Ur and Lagash] were dependent on their agricultural base for the large- scale production of wheat and barley and that was being slowly undermined by environmental degradation brought about by irrigation. About 3500 BC roughly equal amounts of wheat and barley were grown in southern Mesopotamia. But wheat can only tolerate a salt level of half a per cent in the soil whereas barley can still grow in twice this amount. The increasing salinisation of the soil can be deduced from the declining amount of wheat cultivated and its replacement by the more salt tolerant barley. By 2500 BC wheat had fallen to only 15 per cent of the crop; by 2100 Ur had abandoned wheat production and overall it had declined to just 2 percent of the crops grown in the Sumerian region. By 2000 the cities of Isin and Larsa no longer grew wheat and by 1700 BC salt levels in the soil throughout the whole of southern Mesopotamia were so high that no wheat at all was grown."
"What is remarkable is the way that the political history of Sumer and its city states so closely follows the steady decline of the agricultural base. The independent city states survived until 2370 BC when the first external conqueror of the region-- Sargon of Agade--established the Akkadian empire. That conquest is contemporary with the first serious decline in crop yields following widespread salinisation. For the next six hundred years the region saw the Akkadian empire conquered by the Guti nomads from the Zagros mountains, a brief revival of the region under the Third Dynasty of Ur between 2113-2000 BC, its collapse under pressure from the Elamites in the west and Amorites in the east, and about 1800 BC the conquest of the area by the Babylonian kingdom centered on northern Mesopotamia. Throughout this period, from the end of the once flourishing and powerful city states to the Babylonian conquest, crop yields continued to fall making it very difficult to sustain a visible state. By 1800 BC, when yields were only about a third of the level obtained during the Early Dynastic period, the agricultural base of Sumer had effectively collapsed and the focus of Mesopotamian society shifted permanently to the north, where a succession of imperial states controlled the region, and Sumer declined into insignificance as an underpopulated, impoverished backwater of empire."
Ever since the dawn of the Neolithic Revolution, we have followed cycles of growth beyond our agricultural base followed by collapse, only to be followed (in due course) by the same cycle somewhere new. This time it's global, and there's nowhere else to go...
His points do seem a bit extreme, but he originally wrote this in January 2008 where thought of a finance collapse we witnessed was very much on the margins of debate. I say better to be prepared than be surprised. Let's hope Obama is the man to save us (I think he can).

Interesting links. I'll read them more in-depth later.
It seems the older I get, the more I become to realise what Heidegger meant by the 'technological attitude' and it causing the darkening of the world.
Is it possible to have an urban pastoral existence where we care about other beings and things?
Not every segment of our industry is near collapse. Our war industry is thriving (admittedly that's not something we should be necessarily proud of), corporations such as Boeing, MICROSOFT, GE, HONEYWELL and others are doing well, and don't forget that even our defunct auto industry is doing well overseas.
The biggest problem we have is lack of leadership, the consequences of fiscal decisions made on ideological grounds, and greedy businessmen more interested in the bottom line than the well being of our country. Their decisions and consequences have resulted in lack of consumer confidence which, not surprisingly, has had a major impact on our consumer oriented economy.
Yes, we are going through very difficult times and it is going to take time to repair the damage done, but I look forward to more progressive and focused leadership and the effects that that will have on our confidence for a better future not to mention our pride which seems to be dwindling.
While I agree with your observations in general, I still see no logic in the assertion that our economy is less likely to fail because of its size.
The bigger they are, the harder they fall...I'd love to be wrong, but....
"?Though I can see no way to defend the economy, I recognize the need to be concerned for the suffering that would be produced by its failure. But I ask if it is necessary for it to fail in order to change: I am assuming that if it does not change it must sooner or later fail, and that a great deal that is more valuable will fail with it. As a deity the economy is a sort of egotistical French monarch, for it apparently can see no alternative to itself except chaos, and perhaps that is its chief weakness. For, of course, chaos is not the only alternative to it. A better alternative is a better economy. But we will not conceive the possibility of a better economy, and therefore will not begin to change, until we quit deifying the present one." -- Wendell Berry in "A Continuous Harmony"
30 ED I saw this and could not help but think of the double standard.

Yeah his $5million potential fine is a joke and his internment of a few years is likely to be in one of the 'soft' or 'open' prisons, but are we surprised? If one of us robbed one bank I'm pretty sure we would spend the rest of our lives in prison (and a real prison at that). And he robbed loads of banks to the tune of $50billion!

Missed the connection link # 36 Ed, but going directly to WSJ, I had to smile at the article showing a further stumbling block being placed by Bush in front of Obama to slow down all the really important business he must shortly attend to. The right of conscience factor!!!!!!! "The outgoing Bush administration this week will finalize a regulation establishing a "right of conscience" allowing medical staff to refuse to participate in any practice they object to on moral grounds, including abortion but possibly birth control and other health care as well".[wsj] End-games This is just todays trivial stupidity. Any thoughts about Dubyas plans for tomorrow, with Rights of conscience for all. Teachers who do not want to teach any choice of subjects that prick their hearts or souls? Cooks who believe vegetables have feelings? Old fashioned Nannies who refuse to dress little girls in pants? Farmers whose cows moo during milking? Impossible to wipe out with one stroke the damage done over the last 8 years but I hope Obama can dispense with all this last minute diviciveness of a failed administration, with just one stroke of a pen.

I hope for America's sake he has the ability to dodge and swerve in the same manner as Slick Billy, though there is little doubt the Media will put a positive slant on things should he be caught out

How will Barack Obama handle natural and terror disaster? FEMA was incompetent during the Katrina Hurricane. The Director Mike Brown was terminated for failing to evacuate the city before the flood. PA EMA Director Adrian King was fired because he refused to personally assist during the aftermath of the storm. President Obama should develop a comprehensive plan for catastrophic events. He must prepare and respond to emergencies in the Deep South that suffers from hurricanes, the West Coast if devastated by wild fire, and the Central States when attacked by killer tornadoes. International and Domestic Terrorists could attack at any time like during the 9-11 WTC disaster. Obama would consult with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on appropriate procedures for safety, security, and recovery efforts.
How will Barack Obama handle Henry Waxman and George Mitchell? Henry and George are vocal opponents of anabolic steroids and professional sports. Barack avidly follows athletics. The White House should consider supporting body building over snide, political chicanery.

#30, #35, ed, dceilar, if one hopes to obtain mercy
from the system, it is important to rob banks from
the inside.
So, pointing a gun at a teller will get you busted.
But, pointing a gun at the taxpayer will get you
respected.

Missed the connection link # 36 Ed, but going directly to WSJ, I had to smile at the article showing a further stumbling block being placed by Bush in front of Obama to slow down all the really important business he must shortly attend to.
The right of conscience factor!!!!!!!
"The outgoing Bush administration this week will finalize a regulation establishing a "right of conscience" allowing medical staff to refuse to participate in any practice they object to on moral grounds, including abortion but possibly birth control and other health care as well".[wsj]
End-games
This is just todays trivial stupidity.

Obama's rapid selection of his new cabinet has been wise and yet. with nomination of Hillary Clinton for Vice President...
the seeds of Acrimony Vulgaris seem likely to take hold in the White House vegetable patch. Possibly not a problem if the new puppy knows the proper posture with which to approach an invasive shrub, unlike the previous poodle...
Who will now be requesting that all journalists wear slippers during Presidential Library fundraising events.
Gaining much media time, there has been little focus on how the Republican party plans to rebuild. Rumours abound that....
Historians already collating copious material entitled: 'Neo Con' how They Conned the World' have little to write about GW Bush except that he wrote his concepts for his administration in 6 points on a napkin with Karl Rove. Karl Rove since he left the administration...

Sarah Palin called in to smitten Greta Van Susteren of Fox News, to talk about the arson committed at the Wasilla church she attends.
?I?ll leave it to the pastor to speak to,? Palin says in the FOX interview. ?I apologized to the assistant pastor letting him know that if there?s anything that I?ve done to draw negative attention to the church.?
This was a dangerous fire, she notes.

Ed, I think that mot of us here would agree that a comment about wall st is very much on topic given that Justin's link (and there really isn't very much else) is called business as usual. Perhaps you should have used the "I" word to ensure that the post got through!

I know most of you wouldn't want to follow a link to Fox, but I chose this only because of the photograph. Does Justin have an American twin?

#52, seanspa, actually it is time for the truth to come
out. Justin has been living a dual-life. This serves
to explain why he has been making so many trips
across the Atlantic over the last few years.
It will be interesting to see how long he can maintain
this illusion, now that he has two full-time jobs.

I find it very frustrating when my posts are "moderated" and rejected for challenging the view that Obama is some sort of medicine man who will cure all ills.
It appears that he has now been elevated to God like status by some and i have had to check to ensure he was not born on December 25th.
As each day passes it becomes clearer that the American Public have been conned, not for the first time, by the Democrats in league with an Anti-Bush Media.
I find Obama even less inspiring than Ross Peroit. He is bound to fail and scandal already appears to be stalking him from many directions.
I hope for America's sake he has the ability to dodge and swerve in the same manner as Slick Billy, though there is little doubt the Media will put a positive slant on things should he be caught out

I read this posting before it was deleted and considered it completely unoffensive, even if critical of Barack Obama, the media for its unbridled support of Obama, and mocking of those who consider him God's gift to the planet. It would be interesting to find out to what the moderator objected, or is it a case of free speech not being so free any more?

any evidence for this.
He promised everything we have.
he promised a more bipartisan approach---we got it.
he promised that things were going to be tough - they are.
What exactly has he done (other than not be born to good all white family) that you find to be such a con.
If people misinterpreted what he said and now feel betrayed then they should learn to listen and COMPREHEND.
those that did see no con.
59 you cannot see racism . You have proven yourself many times here on this blog to be ,less than impartial about race. And that is being way polite.
Mods strike this and I will bring a long list of his rants. there is still a discussion on the blago post about one of his racially sensitive comments.

Much is said about the "puppy" which will have to be brought into the white house, and no doubt many will be having a field day when it gets caught peeing or worse on the white house lawns. carpets and with better aim, the president foot. However. little is being said about the president elects Sunday prayers, is that because he does his facing east on the white house doormat? Do not get angry, get real. Obama has deep Muslim roots, and one day this may turn and bite the American public who have a habit of being hysterical for the wrong votes. They say God Bless America, I think it should be changed to, God Help America , if this is so.
