Budget to bed?
Rhodri Morgan told the Labour group this morning that he plans to stay on as First Minister
"until the budget is put to bed". That means December 8th.
The election to choose his succesor will be held in the meantime. In other words we now sort of know where the finishing line is but still have no idea when the starting pistol will be fired!

This year December 8th will be especial auspicious, once the budget is set it will be over to the accountants to send out the cheques.
What then ............
.............. there's no extra money in the bank to spend.
.............. there are 60 of them, AMs, to look for deep savings, 20% target.
.............. because it is the year after next that the AMs will have to square it with the taxpayer, when they will be asked to explain exactly why certain projects were favoured, why education, health and housing suffered, ......... why did Anglesey become the poorest part of Europe.

We have some idea, Betsan. If we take the election of the Scottish Labour leader last year as a parallel:
Alexander resigned: 28 June
Nominations closed: 1 August
Results announced: 13 September
However the Glasgow East by-election took out nearly the whole of July. So I would say Labour need a minimum of two weeks for nominations, followed by the same six week election period.
So if the successor is to take office just after 8 December (i.e. to be elected as FM just before the Christmas recess, so as to have that recess to make whatever shuffles s/he may hope to make) it means that the starting gun must be fired somewhere around 8 October.
I'd put a bet on him announcing it at the end of First Minister's Questions on the 6th.

I simply cannot wait until the labour hopefuls announce their candidacy for the position of First Minister within the One Wales Government that relies on their "mortal enemies" to keep them in happy happy land. Besides sorting out the Budget by 8th December (Not long to re-engineer the state)our King Rhodri surely must wait for the report on more powers to be published following consultation with totally apathetic people of wales before leaving his subjects. All the time we are getting closer and closer to the general election which is probably going one of "pivotol",importance to the future of country and I mean the UK not wales which is a small and pretty unimportant part of greater entity. The NATS i.e. Plaid Cymru will be telling people that its partners in government i.e Labour Party is the reason for the relative poverty of wales and they should be rejected at ballot box and elect a seperatist PC majority who could then demand "Independance" and the sun would shine ever more. The One Wales Government is the modern day equivalent of the Hitler/Stalin pact in 1939 that encompassed two enemies who temporarily buried the hatchet until final reckoning at later date. It is a squalid and uninspiring political stitch up that shows the weakness of King Rhodri and the labour party that he has led for many years. Lets hope "two homes lewis" can emerge to destroy the current regime and if a coalition is necessary only have people/politicians in it who respect and value the validity of UK. God save the Queen!!!

That would be sad day for the people of Wales when Mr. Morgan decides to retire from office....

It will certainly help Labour dominate the Welsh media up until Christmas.

8. Makes a change from Adam Price and green fingered Leanne Wood? The
difference being that we will be choosing the next FM. Plaid have yet
to achieve that and the opinion polls and election results show they never will.

With the recent ruling in the high courts that an employer can make an employee retire after the normal retirement age (male 65) and as Rhodri Morgan is a public employee and as such his salary is paid by the tax payer, ie me, can I not demand that he retire now?

9 - You obviously dont remember the Rainbow Alliance negotiations then - if Kirsty Williams had a spine, then IWJ would have been FM already.
For the foreseeable future Wales will almost certainly be run by coalitions, and not all of the coalitions will be Labour-run.

I think you will find that your quote was said to the Prime Minister in 1940. That would have made Cromwell aproximately 340 years old?

In the real (political) world, everything will be to play for in 2011 and the scope for all manner of combinations are open to consideration. To dismiss a party with a 'never' in such a context is surely a sin of accidie.

I think before trying to be clever you should carry out some research.
No.7 is correct in tributing the quotation to Cromwell. I am sure an apology will follow.
Here's a quote I recently came across and thought how apt for many of the distinguished ministers down the bay.
Quote By William E. Simon and slightly tweaked.....
Bad politicians are sent to Cardiff Bay by good people who don't vote.

I command ye therefore, upon the peril of your lives, to depart immediately out of this place; go, get you out! Make haste! Ye venal slaves be gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors. In the name of God, go!
..... said by Cromwell "Glyndo", April 20 1653 at the Rump Parliament.
An apology to "Notonationalism" I believe.

I'll agree with that - a proviso, as long as we still have devolution!!
if Kirsty Williams had a spine, then IWJ would have been FM already.
Wasn't Mike German leader at the time?.
However
Whether due to lack of a spine, or a realistic appraisal of the damage Plaid leadership would do to Wales. - We must all thank our respective deities that it didn't happen.

Both Notonationalism at #7 and Glydo #12 are right.
During the Norway debate on 8th May 1940, Leo Amery delivered a fierce attack on his own government, calling for formation of a truly National Government and a small War Cabinet utilising men who can match our enemies in fighting spirit, in daring, in resolution, and in thirst for victory.
He finished by turning on the government front bench (Chamberlin was PM) and using a famous quote from Oliver Cromwell:
"You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!"
Two days later Chamberlin resigned and Churchil became leader.
The Norway debate is regarded as a high-point in British Parliamentary history, as it occurred at a pivotal moment in a battle for the nation's survival, and showed that individual backbench Members of Parliament could assert their power.
