  However the Glasgow East by-election took out nearly the whole of July. So I would say Labour need a minimum of two weeks for nominations, followed by the same six week election period.
  
  So if the successor is to take office just after 8 December (i.e. to be elected as FM just before the Christmas recess, so as to have that recess to make whatever shuffles s/he may hope to make) it means that the starting gun must be fired somewhere around 8 October.
  
  I'd put a bet on him announcing it at the end of First Minister's Questions on the 6th.

It is a squalid and uninspiring political stitch up that shows the weakness of King Rhodri and the labour party that he has led for many years. Lets hope "two homes lewis" can emerge to destroy the current regime and if a coalition is necessary only have people/politicians in it who respect and value the validity of UK. God save the Queen!!!
