What makes Stephen Fry a national treasure?

The One Show Team | 15:33 UK time, Friday, 2 October 2009

Stephen Fry was the special guest on the one-hour One Show on Friday 2nd October.

Whenever Mr Fry's name is mentioned, the words 'national treasure' are often not far behind. But, modestly, he wouldn't acknowledge his elevated status when he last appeared on the show.

So, we've attempted to clear things up once and for all. We sent out Des Coleman with a cardboard cut-out of the great man to meet the people of the UK. To prove once and for all that Mr Stephen Fry is the real deal: an official, fully-accredited and very widely loved National Treasure!

Watch Des Coleman's adventure below.

I adore stephen fry, he is on my list of fantasy dinner party guests, and he is from Norwich, a very fine city ( I am from London and Norwich makes London look like something you tread in on the street). I moveed here a few years ago and love it. QI is a godsend, intellect and humour all in one. If you read these Mr Fry follow me on Twitter.

    Master Fry is masterful.
He's the simple man's intellectual, a modern day Oscar Wilde, an ever so slightly bohemian techno-geek.

He makes me laugh, he makes me go Hmmm, WOW & well I never but most of all he makes me think!

    What a guy!!
(Ohh and he follows me on twitter which is so cool!)

It makes such a great change for someone to be famous and lauded because he is so intelligent, knowledgeable and entertaining rather than famous for being famous.

I absolutely love Sir Stephen Fry. My partner and me have started to have our very own bank holiday Sir Stephen Fryday, a day when we go all round our town pubs to celebrate this wonderful man. I would love to go out to dinner with him.

Stephen Fry for Prime Minister!!! I would like him to be my best friend and if he could come for tea that would be fantastic. I think he should be our first and foremost National Treasure, so humble, so educated, so funny and so very sweet. He's the BEST!!! XXX

Can't believe you wasted so much money jaunting about the country in connection with Stephen Fry as a "National Treasure".
Sorry to say, despite his talents, he doesn't fit the description for me.

Humourous, witty, intelligent and also refreshingly honest and open. Has the ability to apply himself to anything, yet remain very humble or even dismissive in the face of praise.

...oh, and an anecdote for any situation. As another reviewer put it - Stephen would be a must as any thinking-persons dinner guest.

A gentleman and a scholar, sir! Now turn around and face the wall boy - you are beyond my comprehension!!

I recommend that we all read his books, watch his TV programs and listen to him on the radio at every opportunity.

He is a constantly entertaining, funny, knowledgeable, informative and hugely likable human being. Of course he is a National Treasure.

I too love Stephen Fry. He makes everyone else seem so inadequate. He is intellectual, erudite, often very silly and very ,very funny. I think his impersonations are better than Bremner's. Is there nothing he cannot do? Oh yes - dance!! Possibly the worst dancer ever but lovable with it.
I really like the way he was so embarrassed by the plaudits on the One Show - it shows he is truly humble about his achievements.
If anyone deserves to be knighted he certainly does for his contributions to the British image and his real and genuine entertainment value. QI is the best thing on TV and unlike most other programmes it bears watching again and again.

I used to like his work in fry & laurie and blackadder where he mainly played a pompous twit; little did I know he was just playing his true self. He has far too much exposure on BBC TV and radio.

Stephen Fry fulfils the role of national treasure in his gentlemanly and intelllectual manner which harks back to earlier BBC. Unfortunately in those days being gay was not recognised.

I will always remember a sketch he did with Meat Loaf. In this he defined "bad arsed dude" as "nasty bottomed person". A hilarious memory of one whose gentle performance makes the show Kingdom worthwhile. His behaviour is that of an old fashioned BBC man.

What does he do but sit there with a smirk on his face wittering away to all and sundry.
If SF is a treasure then he should be planted at the bottom of our garden in the rose bed along with the rest of the horse s..t
