Update: 29/05/09

It's been eight days since quadreplegic sailor, Hilary Lister set off in her bid to become the first disabled woman to sail round the British Isles, solo.

Since we caught up with Hilary last week, One Show viewers, like blogger Miaoucat have been asking how Hilary is getting on. 

Miaoucat asked:

"How far has Hilary Lister got in her circumnavigation of Britain? Christine promised to keep us up to date but I can't find any information. Anybody know?"

We can report that Hilary and team are currently in Padstow, Cornwall. She is planning to set sail at midnight on Sunday to catch the right tides to take her on a 12-hour trip around to Bude. 

The entrance to Bude harbour is notoriously difficult technically and in recent days the waves in the area have been between 8-10 ft high. As a result Hilary and her team have been waiting in Padstow since last Monday for swells from the Atlantic to subside.

We're looking for the next generation of political cartoonists - if you're 16 years old or younger send your funny drawing in and it could be shown on the programme.

You pick the subject - but it needs to be topical.

There's been a lot to cartoon about, MPs' expenses have hit the headlines recently, as has the  bank bail-outs. The papers are filled with news of the recession, the contest to be the next Speaker, Brown and Cameron's battle for power... all good areas for cartoonists!

After being around for such a long time, our 100-yr-olds know a thing or two. So we asked them  'What is the most significant thing life has taught you?'  And they replied...

Vera Evans: "Be optimistic, never pessimistic, it will always be a better day tomorrow".

Walter Tucker: "If there is one thing I've learnt in my life, it's that the support of your family means everything."

Essie Gauga: "To live and love, to be kind to people and always speak the truth".

Queenie Wells: "To work hard and play hard, enjoy what you do and don't waste time on things that you don't, be nice to people and they will be nice back."

George Milligan: "Health is your wealth, family and friends are the most important things and possessions are of no importance".

Mabel Watson: "Family and friends, passion for life, enjoyment of going to whist drives and socialising"

Arthur Allsopp: "Everyone needs fresh air, sunshine, hard work and a cooked meal everyday to ensure a long healthy life".

Grace Salter: "To make the most of life - whatever its problems - and soldier on come what may. Never give up on anything and if it's worth doing it's worth doing well"

Jim Mount: "Stay loyal and true to those you love and gardening!"

Marion Davies: "Most significant thing learnt is having a loving family."

For The One Show, Hardeep Singh Kohli has been asking whether handwriting is fast becoming a dying art. With the popularity of emails and texting, has the nation really forgotten how to write neatly?

We have a challenge for you. Tonight The One Show is making an attempt on three World Records, and, just for fun, we'd like you to get involved.

At present the World Record for the number of spoons balanced on someone's face stands at 16. Joe Allison, 9, from Devon is the record holder. He hung tablespoons from his forehead, nose, cheeks and chin.

Can you break Joe's record?

We'd like to see if you can challenge Joe's record. We're sure talented One Show viewers can balance many spoons on their faces. And even if you can't, please remember it's not the winning, it's the taking part that counts!

Balancing spoons on the face is trickier than it looks. We asked One Show cameraman Martyn Porter, pictured right, to attempt the record. He could manage to balance a grand total of one spoon (holding an extra two spoons onto his face doesn't count!). He told us "it's always about the nose" and "breathing on the spoons helps".

Assistant producer Ed was more successful. He managed five spoons. It was noted that he "has the right shaped ears".

The "rules" and please be careful!

Please note: This is just for fun - we're just curious to see how well you do. Please be careful while balancing the spoons. Please do not place yourself in danger. Inserting spoons into your ears and mouth should not be considered. No glue allowed!

2 Tone Records launched 30 years ago. For The One Show, Billy Bragg took a journey back to where it all began and found out how the label provided the soundtrack to a tough period in British history - 1979 to 1982.

The Two Tone genre was created by fusing elements of other musical genres. Ska, punk rock, reggae and more were thrown into the mix. Its famous tracks include Ghost Town by The Specials, A Message To You, Rudy by The Specials, Mirror in the Bathroom by The Beat and Prince by Madness.

What are the songs that you recommend?

Over the last 60 years music genres have come, gone and hung around.
From folk to punk, rocking and raving has come into, and gone out of, fashion.

Today (11/05/09) Julie Goodyear appeared on the  show encouraging men and women aged over 65, to give computers and the internet a go.

The One Show is getting involved with Dig In - the BBC campaign to get the nation to grow their own grub. We're encouraging One Show viewers to grow chillies.

To get you started we gave away packets of Ring of Fire chilli seeds at the end of The One Show, 1st May 2009.

We've been lovingly taking care of our chilli seeds. They've germinated and have now been transferred into small pots. We'd love to know what's happening with your seeds.

How to grow chillies

"Fill a 7.5cm pot with seed compost, level and tap to settle. Lightly firm. Scatter the seeds of your chosen variety thinly on top - most seeds germinate so you only need to sow two more seeds than you need in case of losses..." Find out more about growing chillies at BBC Gardening.
