Photographer Justin Quinnell was in the studio teaching Adrian and Christine to take photos using homemade pinhole cameras.

On the right is the photo Christine took with her pinhole camera.

If you fancy yourself as a budding pinhole photographer here's our handy guide on how you can make your own camera.

Assembly

If you're under sixteen years of age, please ask an adult to help you with this.

  • Cut out, using thin black card, a circle 6 cm in diameter and a strip 25cm x 7cm with 1 cm notches cut along one edge.
  • Use some gaffer tape to assemble a light proof cap on the end of a can.
  • Cut the top off of an aluminium can with a good can opener.
  • Avoid steel as it leaves a dangerous sharp edge. The taller beer cans are best, as they take untrimmed 5x7 photographic paper.pinhole camera
  • Sand down the sharp edge at the top of the can with some fine emery paper.
  • Gently push in and remove a pin half way up the can, then sand down the rough edges on the inside of the pinhole.
  • Cover the hole with an insulation tape 'shutter', and then place on the light-tight cap.

See below for tips on how to develop your photographic paper.

Fierce: Jamie's photo shortlist

The One Show Team | 14:42 UK time, Friday, 17 April 2009

One Show wildlife photographer Jamie Crawford has looked at the galleries and chosen his favourites. Here's his 'Fierce' top three:

  • 'Pigeon V Pigeon' by Jeremy Kelly from East Yorkshire

Pigeon v. PigeonLast summer, Jeremy Kelly was testing out a new lens for his camera when he saw some pigeons on the house opposite his. Of the couple of photos he took, this was the best one so he decided to submit it. Jeremy is 29 years old and always carries his camera with him. He takes photos of "everything and anything".

  • 'Eagle' by David Berkshire from Sunbury-on-Thames

EagleDavid's picture is of a bird of prey at Warwick Castle in Summer 2008.

Jamie's overall favourite in this category was:

  • 'Need to feed' by Terry Cavner from Blyth, Northumberland

Need to FeedTerry took this photo of a fox and rabbit last year after watching them on wetland near Blyth. He told us "I had been there every day, at 4am for almost a week. They had passed by me daily but I couldn't get a shot that I was happy with. Finally on the sixth day, the fox got the rabbit after a chase. I rattled off about nine shots, the fox was startled for a moment and in a flash spun around and bid a hasty retreat. I must admit I was ever so pleased with my result."

Terry is 57-yr-old rigging supervisor and takes photos of wildlife at every opportunity he has.

Cute: Jamie's photo shortlist

The One Show Team | 14:39 UK time, Friday, 17 April 2009

One Show wildlife photographer Jamie Crawford has chosen his favourite pictures for the 'Cute' shortlist. Here are his top picks:

  •  'Deer at Richmond Park' by Richard Baggott from Woking, Surrey

deerinrichmondpark.jpgRichard, 23, is a warehouse worker. He usually takes photos of motorsport racing but finds wildlife photography just as exciting as "you never know what to expect". Richard was walking in Richmond Park when he happened across a group of deer. He managed to get within five metres of this deer, who was happy to pose for the picture. He thinks the strength of this photo lies in the composition and the fact it's "not something you see every day". Richard was pleased to have had this rare opportunity to get so close to a deer.

  •  'Bad hair day' by Ray Garlick from Rainham, Kent

badhairday.jpgRay writes "Robins - remember never to perch on garden fences with your tail pointing into the wind!"

Jamie's overall favourite in this category was:

  • 'One day old' by Eddie Campbell from South Shields

onedayold.jpgEddie took this photograph in Washington Wildlife Park in South Shields last spring.  He went there every day for two weeks to keep watch on a mallard duck who was about to give birth. The duck had a brood of 14 chicks and Eddie was able to get this shot of one of them, just one day after it was born. Eddie told The One Show "if you look closely at the tip of its beak you still see the sharp piece which chicks use to cut themselves out of their shell. These drop off after several days but at one day old it is still there to see".

Eddie loves taking wildlife and natural history photographs and regularly explores the coastline and Lake District near to his home, to take his pictures. His sister-in-law encouraged him to send in this photo, which he likes because the chick is "all ready to begin its life".

One Show wildlife photographer Jamie Crawford has chosen his favourite photographs from the 'Beautiful' category. Here they are:

  • 'Ponies at Dawn' by Roger Hatley from the New Forest

poniesatdawn.jpgRoger, 61, is retired and lives in Hive. This image of ponies grazing in the mist at dawn was taken at Lyndhurst in the New Forest. He took the picture really early one morning in August and Roger says he had never seen light like it before.

Roger is a member of a camera club and often enters competitions, he does "very well" but is always surprised about which ones people like. He admits to not being a patient photographer but does always have his camera at the ready.

  • 'Owl from above' by Stephen Durrant from Norfolk

owlfromabove.jpg Another picture that caught Jamie's eye was this wonderful photo of an owl.

However, Jamie's overall favourite photograph in this category was:

  • 'Garden snail' by Andrew Thompson from Bury, Lancs

gardensnail.jpgAndrew says he "found this snail in the back garden and it was happy to pose for the camera!"

To tie or not to tie?

The One Show Team | 18:04 UK time, Monday, 6 April 2009

Comments (63)

The necktie has long been associated with dressing smartly. The tie was, and sometimes still is, seen as essential office attire or formal wear for men.

The phrase like "old school tie" still conjures up a whole series of associations of privilege and exclusivity, just from the colours on a strip of cloth.

But fast forward to the present day and ties seem to be becoming less and less popular.

Tie sales are reportedly down from a decade ago, and some doctors have even suggested they are detrimental to our health. Open collars abound!

Some might argue that a tie offers a point of difference, a chance for people to say something about their own personality. In a business world dominated by black and grey suits, some might see their tie as a sign of individuality.

So, what do you think? To tie or not to tie? Are neckties best left in the past? Or are they here to stay? Have your say here.
