Despite continual protests from campaigners, sales of animal fur have risen.
It remains fashion's biggest taboo but whether we like it or not, fur can be seen on fashion catwalks around the world and is being worn by the rich and famous.
Are our attitudes changing? Is it ever right to wear real fur?

I can't see the problem. We have for all time used animals for food and clothing - is eating going to become frowned upon next? There's enough regulation to ensure the animals are well treated. There are very few man made materials that have the same properties when faced with a siberian winter.

The return of fur as a fashion item is in short disgusting. Any civilised person should realise that there are so many alternatives to fur in the modern world there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to wear this murderous item.

If anyone has seen the footage released by PETA, which was filmed in China, of cats and dogs (amongst other poor creatures) packed into tiny cages and thrown about and then being skinned alive - and if you think this is OK, then these people need questioning.

And to those who feel its ok because we eat meat or wear leather then please consider that leather is a by product of the food trade and that the eating of meat is natural for humans - we are carnivours. The killing of an animal purely for fashion is unnaceptable in the modern world.

Fur has long been associated with other materialistic status symbols, usually by people who don't have much but wish to 'wear their wealth'. The manner in which this fur is produced, especially in the lower price ranges, is despicable, often with the animal being skinned before they are even dead. The wearing of fur just signifies indifference to suffering to compensate for something missing in the wearer's lives.

There is a huge difference between breeding and killing an animal for food and the distasteful practice of killing wild animals purely for aesthetic vanity. Modern imitation furs - if you like that kind of wear - is capable of providing the same effect without the murdering of wild animals for no genuinely good reason. If hunting is banned, and this was confirmed by this Governments own report (the Burns Report) as being the most humane way of controlling foxes, then killing wild animals for Vanity should defrinitely be banned.

Which ever the way, their death is incredibally brutal and their skinless body is then thrown away or left to rot - think also of the canadian seal hunt! I do not eat or wear any animals, and follow a vegan diet. But even as a vegan, I do not think it is hypocritical at all for non vegies to not wear fur. It is one thing to eat something to give sustenance, it is completely another to inhumanly rip the skin from another living creature, and put it on ones own skin, purely in the name of fashion, something utterly frivolous and needless. Fur looks much better were it originally belongs.
But the question is do we have the 'right'. One needs to define what having the 'right' actually is. It's a way of justifying our actions. Can we, in the western world, justify farming animals in unimaginably inhuman ways, purely to rip them up, rip off their skin, and put it on our skin, for no other reason than fashion?

Ok - I eat meat, so I have no problem with wearing leather and suede.... we eat the pigs and cows and sheep, so it's only right to use as much of the animal as we can. I don't understand vegetarians who wear leather.
However, I've not met anyone who EATS mink or chinchilla, or leopard or tiger...... which makes a significant difference. To kill something merely to wear its skin, when there are perfectly good modern substitutes available seems unethical. Yes, cavemen wore furs - but they didn't have alternatives. Yes, the Inuit wear fur - but they do use as much of the animal as possible, and given the conditions fur may well be the best option.
But as yet, it's not 30 degrees below on the modern High Street. The whole fur thing is being driven by fashion and the desire to flaunt wealth.
Fur is better left on the animal. And face it folks - it will never look as good on you as it does on the original creature.

I wish I had realised this was going to be on the show. It made me so angry, and I had to turn over, after hearing the comments about women looking better wearing fur, and the comment that if you ate meat then that somehow made wearing fur acceptable. Much of this fur comes from animals which are not in the British food chain...cats, dogs, etc etc.
For it to appear on The One Show like this is upsetting, and I really hope they will feature a few famous beautiful women who look wonderful without having to drape a dead animal on their bodies.

Emily 1313; How do you know, when you buy fur, that it has not originated in China? You can't always rely on labels nowadays, as the maker may import skins from China, make the 'clothing' (yeuk) and label and sell it under his own label. If you want the gruesome butchery of animals like cats, dogs and rabbits on your conscience that's up to you. I hope you sleep well at night.

Like Nigella, I have a mink stole that belonged to my mother. It hangs in my wardrobe but I have never worn it and wouldn't. However, my mother died in a car accident when I was 10 and, although I am now 60, it is still a reminder of a beautiful woman. I believe I should now get rid of it but I wouldn't sell it any more than I could bring myself to put it in the dustbin.

Nigella Lawson should lose weight and stop eating so much disgusting and heart-clogging food, such as goose fat, and clotted cream.
BBC, please set an example and stop putting these toffs on TV as an example of preparing healthy food or an example of a good decent human-being.
Nigella doesn't need the money - and I find her extremely naive and arrogant.
Get some decent healthy food shows on TV. Try a vegetarian/vegan show?

The difference between wearing fur and wearing leather coats is the the ANIMALS ARE ALIVE WHEN THEY ARE BEING SKINNED!!!!!! Until you watch it on the peta website you have no right to even comment on it!!!!! WATCH IT and then decide! EVERYONE that wears fur should be MADE to watch it, it is the most horrendous, harrowing thing I have EVER seen. All you fashion losers are welcome to wear fur if it is killed humainly but when a living creature has to go through pain and suffering like that, it is TOTALLY barbaric and wrong!

The use of fur is disgusting the animals are treated so poorly, and then skinned alive. I think that anyone who buys fur should think about whether they would like that to happen to their pets. Some people are just small minded and dont think about where the fur comes from. People feel pain too just think how much it would hurt if you were skinned alive and there was nothing that you could do to stop it. I think that everyone should think a little but more where all things from animals come from.

'The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the ways its animals are treated ~ Mahatma Gandhi' (1869-1948, Spiritual leader of India). Fur for fashion can never be justified – those that wear fur are extremely shallow and obviously do not have any kind of conscience. Whilst millions of animals continue to suffer on this delicate planet, perhaps those more caring and compassionate humans, who are concerned about the innocent sentient beings with whom we share this world, will be able to console themselves in knowing that “what goes round comes round”! Sadly, the odds are strongly stacked against gaining respect for all the animals in this world. We can’t save every animal on earth but we should all do our best to ensure that those animals that do come within touching distance of us have never suffered and will never suffer for the vanity of a pathetic follower of fashion. For those of you who think wearing fur is okay, visit the PETA and LYNX websites and find out the true facts of how the fur and skin is literally ripped off live animals simply to satisfy a pathetic fashion whim.

Fur is environmentally friendly and along with leather naturally sustainable materials. In many parts of the world they are essential to human survival for heat containment. Nearly all my fur and leather which I use in winter are for the purpose of warmth in wet and windy conditions. other materials simply do not work at all well and wear out. My 1940s flying jacket packed up 5 years ago, but everything else, some from my grandparents will outlive me even with the hard use. Unfortunately those who advocate the inferior artficial materials are the ones polluting the planet for the rest of us.

I think people who wear fur are vain, ignorant and narrow minded fools. There are currently no laws in place to regulate the fur trade. Fur is transported to one place and is sorted by colour, not by country of origin. China's fur trade industry is the biggest in the world and they skin animals alive so as not to damage the fur. As the animals fur is being ripped off it's own back it is still breathing but in so much agony it doesn't have the strength to yelp. Watch the video on PETA's website and if you still think fur is ok then you are truly heartless! The chinese will skin anything and there is no way of telling whether you are wearing fox or rabbit OR cat or dog. Some of these pets still have their collars on them when they are being treated in this inhumane way. These are people's family pets! If you wear fur take a moment to think where it might of come from and what agony that animal had to go through so you could look nice! People think that it is ok to skin an animal but not a human, animals have rights too. They cannot scream out and say "that hurts" but it doesn't mean they don't feel pain! It is a good job there are people in this world that are willing to speak out for animal rights.

WELL DONE - I am so impressed with the One Show, you guys have done an excellent job. Perhaps in a future show you can also delve into the devastating effect the fur industry has on the environment. The CO2 emissions from fur farms are excessively high and the pollution from these farms have devastating effects on the surrounding environment.
When an animal dies it degrades naturally - so to ensure a fur coat will last it is extensively treated. The fur industry pollutes the environment with highly toxic chemicals, including sulfuric acid, formaldehyde, and ammonia. A farmed-fur coat takes at least 20 times more energy to produce than a faux-fur coat, and dressing and dyeing furs is classified as high-polluting by China's National Environment Protection Bureau.
So aside from the very important fact that killing an animal for fashion is abhorrent, it is also detrimental to the environment.

I think it's terrible that people can consider wearing real fur. Most of these animals are kept under stressful conditions, some are still alive when they are skinned and it's carried out in front of the other terrified animals. These animals are not part of the food chain and are soley bred to be killed. We as humans eat meat and wear leather which is a by-product of a regulated industry where animals are cared for, do have a life and are slaughtered under strict guidelines.
These needs to be stopped before it escalates into more animals being killed needlessly.

How many cats, dogs, and foxes have you seen skinned in our supermarkets? They are killed soley for their fur and as a reasonably intelligent person, Nigella should realise this important difference. And to your 'beatiful body' comment, since I have never met you (and have no intention of doing so), I cannot judge your looks, but I imagine you are beautiful by the media standards, which assume that everyone should look like everyone else and fit a certain frame, which is an appalling attitude, and should be banned, so as to stop people starving themselves in order to look like the models in magazines.
And foxes hardly 'overpopulate' the countryside! There are more CHICKENS than there are foxes- but I suppose that's OK, since we eat them, isn't it? There are more chickens than there are humans, for that matter, and the majority are suffering in conditions that should be reserved for judgemental people and torturers.

I've noticed one common misconception in this thread - fur is NOT a byproduct of the meat industry, unlike leather and sheepskin. You could never safely eat animals produced for fur - they are reared in such disgusting conditions that their meat is inedible. Therefore it is UTTERLY different to eating ethically produced meat. China is the world's biggest producer of fur - read Care for the Wild's report on fur production and trade in China on the Care for the Wild website.

For any animal to die for the sake of fashion, when in a modern world we can keep warm by using synthetic materials or by products of the food chain, to me is totally unacceptable. People who go on about us living in caves and wearing animal skins in the past seem to forget that they now pop down to their shops in cars etc to get their food and can go back to their heated homes. If they want to wear fur, go and live in an unheated cabin near the north pole in a climate and conditions where you have to hunt and kill to survive.
We, in this country, do not need to wear the skins of endangered wild animals, or factory farmed dogs and cats etc to stay warm.

Hello Christine & Adrian,
I have read many of the currently 174 messages on this subject and have been heartened to see how many find the whole thing repulsive. There is life after all!
The question of wearing fur is to do with pleasure and personal gratification. What are we doing? Pleasure in itself is natural and good but we pursue it in so many selfish and destructive ways! It would form an interesting field for your team to research and go into! To have pleasure without hurting or harming oneself or other beings, human or animal!
Congratulations on the dancing by the way Christine.I think you were very brave but clearly not always comfortable!
Best wishes to the BBC and your team for Xmas.

I am 65 years old and when I left school I served a 5 year apprenticeship in the fur trade. I am a qualified fur finisher and liner. On many occasions I sewed what are now endangered animals. E.G. otter, beaver, fur seal, ocelot, even on one occasion a tiger skin rug. Times and thoughts have changed sins those days, but I still think farmed animals like ranch mink etc.should be allowed. Having worked on many a mink coat,I can still say they are so beautiful I for one,if it were not for the outcome , would love a mink coat. There are still some about and I love to see them. No doubt I'll be shot at dawn for saying this, but I don't hear all the non-fur people complaining about their leather shoes or handbags et.
cows and sheep are animals just the same as the others. Needless to say I am no longer in the fur trade . Helen. Carlisle.

The fur trade is unnecessary and very cruel. How even the hardest person could not be moved by the despicable cruelty, particularly in china, is beyond me.
With regards to leather, if you are going to kill the cow for food, then it is a waste not to use what's left for leather.
Skinning an animal alive so some vain idiot can show off a new coat or hat is despicable.
I shall certainly not be buying any Nigella products after watching lastnight's show and I hope others follow suit.

The selling of fur should be banned, I can't believe that this question is even up for debate. To call ourselves a nation of animal lovers and then wear fur is a joke.
The cruelty and awful deaths that these animals have to endure in the name of fashion and vanity is an outrage. There is nothing wrong with wearing faux fur.
I found yesterdays programme quite harrowing and was in tears most of last night and the images you showed of those animals in that farm will stay with me forever.
And the argument that because we eat meat we can wear fur is riduclous. Yes I do wear leather but I also eat beef. I do not eat fox, mink, dog or cat , well not that I'm aware of anyway ;-)

It is amazing that after all our years of evolution man still uses other animals for food and for clothing, and even kill them just for amusement! Other species share our planet and are evolving (unlike man which, we are told, has completed its evolution). I suspect that those other creatures will evolve beyond us. Let's face it, it is not a hard battle to win.
Mankind, by this time, should no longer be using other animals. We have plenty of other food to eat and fabrics to wear. We do not need to extinguish the lives of others in order to use them. Those who hunt and those, like Nig Lawson, who wear fur are still savages. They are shallow, vile and disgusting.

I was shocked to see animals that were destined for slaughter being kicked and no prior warning issued it was being broadcast. I has played on my mind, a show that is entertainment and usually light hearted should have warned us. I am not a veggie and keep chickens so I do now about killing but I dont want it in my face at 7.00 7.30. Children must have seen it as well the One Show is a family program.

I watched the programme last night and was furious at the ridiculous arguments in favour of wearing fur.
People were saying that it was exactly the same as wearing leather.
IT IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT!
When a cow is killed the meat is eaten and the hide is used for leather.
I have never heard of people eating minks, foxes, leopards etc.
These animals are killed purely for the vanity of evil people and only the skin is used.
The best comment I ever heard was that 'FUR IS WORN BY BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS AND UGLY PEOPLE'.

wearing fur is not the same as wearing leather. it's like the diffence between killing soldiers and killing civilians. cattle are killed, hopefully, most of the time, in a humane and controlled manner and are domesticated so it is less stressfull for them, all parts are used and it only makes sense to use the skin if you're going to eat the meat. killing wild cats, bears, foxes and other wild animals is something completely different. they are often beaten to death or just skinned alive, can you imagine the amount of pain and sufferering, they have nervous systems just like we do, just because they can't tell us in English doesn't mean they don't feel it. unfortunately these 'designer' labels make their coats in europe or america, but they buy the material cheap from the chinese, where there is absolutely no control and the people who do the actual skinning have no feelings at all. there is no excuse and no justification for wearing fur and people who create a market for it are without conscience.

I was appalled at the people who felt no guilt in the wearing of fur, (as a fashion item).
As a species we have always been omnivores and as such we eat meat as well as vegetables. We must, of course give a good quality of life and a compassionate death to those animals that we eat - and use as much of that animal as possible so we can justify its death. Therefore the use of leather and sheepskin is acceptable - even a requirement.
The alternative to being an omnivore is being a vegan - not a vegetarian. Unwanted, male baby animals that cannot be milked or produce more babies are not returned to the wild or sent to a rest home.
Killing animals for the kudos of wearing its (expensive) fur is unacceptable and should be prohibited by law. Have the people who buy animal furs never heard of China?
How do they live with themselves?

Wearing fur is NOT the same thing as eating meat. I do neither, as I am a vegetarian. However I don't have a problem with people eating/wearing animals if they are humanely reared and slaughtered in the process. Unfortunately this is far from the case. Fur is only a fashion item, most of it comes from China, where dogs and cats are SKINNED ALIVE and left to die in agony. Does it make you feel good wearing fur, knowing where it has come from? Please see the website for www.peta.org.uk, which shows videos of these horrific practices. This is completely unethical, humans have no right to treat animals like this. The sort of people who do have no compassion for their fellow humans either.
(After all, does China have a great record for human rights?!! I rest my case).

Thus, fake fur is the luxury for a temporary

I was shocked and I did cry after seeing the terrified eyes of all the animals. How can mankind do this to those animals? We have the intelligence to be the gardians of this planet, but we are not. I never realised they skinned dogs, one dog on the film showed looked like my pet dog which upset me further. I can not get that image out of my head now. I agree with animal rights activists and will now look to be showing my support for them in light of the film shown. I am also a member of compasion in world farming, which I am proud of.
I think Mankind is disgusting, Im ashamed to be a human being. We are all parasites on this planet, we dont see animals treat each other in this way. As for the chinese, and the laws out there, they have hardly any human rights for one and other. Bird flu originated out there because if the inhumane way they treat their fowl. They eat everything that moves and show no respect. Im surprised they dont legalise cannibalism, skin eachother alive after all, look what they do to their baby girls! The fur trade should be banned. Fashionable it is not, they just make themselves look like modern day Flint Stones. I would rather wear human skins than animals. There are a few politician heads I would love stuffed and mounted on my wall.

Responding to your feature on fur. People are comparing leather as being the same as fur. I was always under the impression that leather was taken from humanly slaughtered animals that were used for their meat. Where as most fur is taken from animals often skinned alive and only used for their fur. Please can the One Show enlighten us with some more facts so people can be educated more.
I was horrified at the pictures from China and feel these countries need to be bought to task for their actions. There is outrage at the way the Japannese hunt the dolphins and it is outragous what mankind does to wear fur. The people that wear real fur are vain and selfish. They want to appear to look good, but if they had a conscience and a personality they would be far more attractive to the outside world.

I was extremely disappointed in The One Show's rather "one sided" and dare I say "pro-fur" feature. Not once did I feel that The One Show had provided a fare argument, and there was certainly the distinct absence of any strong debate. Instead I found myself, a very well educated and intelligent woman, being made to feel hypocritical for eating meat but being totally against the wearing of fur. My mistake, for I never realised that farm animals were often beaten, clubbed to the point of near death before being skinned alive to produce meat in this country!! I found the One Show's feature rushed, amateur, biased and therefore irrelevant.
The fur trade is cruel, but i'm afraid and rather saddened that your show failed to portray this in favour of immoral, brain dead, fashion victims who fail to realise that wearing fur not only looks "cheap", but puts atleast 30 years on you.

Since when have people become so stupid????
This segment on the One Show made me so angry, with the pompous so-called "Fashion" designers who are so pro-fur! Of course they are, they're making shed loads of money from stupid women who buy it and don't care where it comes from! I, like the lady above me, am an educated woman, and I too felt hypocritical when they started talking about wearing leather being the same as wearing fur - ITS NOT!
Oh sorry, I am mistaken - in Britain we very regularly sit down to mink, dog and cat dinners don't we ? ? ?
I wish people would start thinking before producing such one-sided trash as this feature - I, personally, am a vegetarian but I am not so narrow-minded as to think everyone should be - it's your own choice - However, I do agree with wearing leather, if you wish to, because, other wise it would go to waste... Not the same with mink, cats, dogs etc. We, in this country, do not regularly eat meat like this, so why would you think it fine just to breed something, beat it to death, electrocute it or the like, whilst it's still breathing and rip it's pelt off???
Just for a second - think about how hideous that must feel - but thats the problem - No conscience. If you sit and think about it, just for a second, you will understand. Hideous practice, hideous looking clothes...
But, of course, we are living in a world where it is fine to test everyday cosmetics, toiletries and household cleaners on innocent animals just for profit. Why should fur be any different?
And why was the representative from PETA given a few seconds of the entire feature...
To reiterate, why are we going backwards???????? Women are being degraded, fur is coming back... Why don't we withdraw the vote for women and close down the internet... Seems fitting...
Of course, i'm sorry, it's fashion and that seems to rule now... Silly me...

Until recently I did not understand about the horrors and torture that animals suffer (including cats and dogs), such as being skinned alive, to supply fur to the Western fashion industry. I too didn't think there was much of an issue about the pleasures of people wearing fur! I thought we eat meat, might as well wear the skin. My views changed radically once I stumbled across an animal welfare website which set out some of the truly grim realities of the fur business.
Most fur supplied for our fashion industry comes from countries without animal welfare legislation. The suffering that the animals killed have to endure is truly heartbreaking. I continue to be haunted by some of the images I saw.
So long as we demand fur, these animals will continue to suffer these horrendous fates. Perhaps the reality of this trade is not widely understood and awareness should be raised in a big way.

Well, I dont have a problem with people wearing fur if it was their grandmothers and passed down. I do however have a problem with people clubbing baby seals to death just for the purpose of looking good, or chasing down a fox and making its last moments of life terrifying, or any other animal for that matter.
If fur (like leather) is the bi-product of a COMMONLY used meat product, I wouldnt have a problem with it, so I believe that if you eat a lot of rabbit, then you can wear rabbit fur, but since you dont eat baby seal or fox, dont wear their fur!

For goodness sake people - get real. Stop and think for a minute. Do you REALLY think animals are tortured and skinned alive for the fur trade? Why? because you have seen it on a propagandar video produced by self interest groups who have hidden agendas, and make $MILLIONS fron gullible people like you that believe them?
There are plenty of internet sites telling the REAL srory, agendas, and actions of PETA. please read them before you part with your hard earned money, cos they certainly wont use it to further animal welfare.
They dont disclose their sources, and yet there is a wealth of information out there from reliable sources that are verifiable. Think for yourself for a change, and do some REAL research.
For the record. Dog and cat fur is not desireable fur in the fur trade. the huge majority of fur comes form strictly controlled fur farms in the west. China imports these pelts and then exports them again as garments. Fur of China origin represents the minority of fur in the West.
It's easy to find barbaric cowboy methods in any industry, including ALL of the rest of the clothing industry. You don't close down a whole industry because of the illegal actions of a few.
China Does have stict animal welfare regulations. The people on these sick videos were breaking the law.
No animal including humans is isolated. Every animal within nature uses every other animal in some way or another. Nature is neutral. There is no shame in that. There is no cruelty in that, it just is. If you dont believe this then you just havent understood the precious natural world and the lives of the animals you are trying to save.
To criticise fur wearers as rich, toff, dumb vain, or whatever is just dumb. the huge majority of fur wearers are ordimary people like you and me. They are certainly not flaunting their wealth, but have paid more for a luxury well made garment. Is the politics of envy creeping in here perhaps? It perhaps says more about the weakmess of your arguments that you have to resort to playground name calling to further your cause.
Many animals are pests which do huge damage to the environment. The New Zealand Possum for example. It HAS to be controlled. It also has a beautifully warm and practical fur. It's not killed for its fur, but if the fur wasnt used it would just go to waste. the animal would be killed anyway. Is it OK to wear possum fur then? Woul dyou advocate just letting a valuable natural resource rot away into the ground?
The environmental impact of the fur trade is minute compared to the hideous environmental impact of the cotton trade. (or the oil industry for synthetics) Why arent you up in arms over that? Don't believe me? Take a look at one of the worst man made environmental disasters of all time, the Arral Sea - look it up. A toxic puddle caused by the cotton industry
This could go on for ever. There are FACTS out there, not the propaganda lies of the animal rights crowd. look them up. and think for youself instead of being led by the nose all your life

There is no excuse or reason to wear fur or leather. The alternatives are out there. To support any industry in fur or leather, whether its your coat, furniture, leather belt, handbag or purse allows society to 'think' we approve. In reality if we watched the slaughter process of these items being manufactured such as the skining alive a dog, cat, mink, or fox or the slaughterhouses where cows and pigs are barbarically treated without any compassion would we still feel the same way. I believe if you want to design or wear such items spend a day in a fur farm or slaughterhouse where there are no animal rights and then propose a 'good' reason why you should still design or wear the coat or skin of another living being. Society on a whole does not approve as with other sectors of animal 'production' it is the 'financial' status not the 'moral' status that these people wish to be noticed for. Shame on them to put wealth before wellbeing.

A few points to be made to those who think it is fine to wear fur
1. To keep warm, the Innuit wear their fur with the skin on the outside, not on the inside as is done with fashion/status statement fur. They also eat and make use of the whole animal. That is natural, that is survival.
2. If no modern products were as effective as fur, mountain climbers, rescuers, explorers etc etc would wear fur, they do not.
3. There is the world of difference between leather, the by-product of the food we acquire from domestic species raised and slaughtered humanely, and furs which come from the trapping by snare or gin trap, of endangered species, a grotesque method which also leads the the unnecessary suffering and death of what are referred to as 'trash' animals as snares and gin traps do not discriminate.

I wear leather which is a byproduct of animals killed for food, cow's pig's sheep ect. however, I object to animals killed in an inhumane way just for fur, these animals suffer horrific deaths so that their hides remain intact, all this cruelty so rich ladies can wear a coat, that looks beautiful on the animal, and doesn't look half as good on them, if these ladies were forced to be presant at the death of the animal, the fur trade would collapse overnight, because I don't think they would have the stomach for it. I wonder if we would support wearing fur if we looked at it from the animals point of view. If you were reincarnated as a dog in China where you would actually be skinned alive, would fur get your support then if it was happening to you? or perhaps you prefer anal electrocution? being clubbed to death? being kept on a fur farm in a cage driven insane with boredom so that you'd self mutilate exposing your bare bones and receiving no veterinary treatment, maybe being caught in a barbaric trap sounds better? Its animal abuse on a massive scale.
and to Jonathon in Exeter who said:
"If fur is produced in a manner that is acceptible then there should be some mechanism by which tracabilty can be ensured. We manage it with meat, why not fur?" We all wear leather after all!
We dont ALL wear leather Jonathon and we don't manage it with meat either. Have you not searched the internet? or have you not seen any of the many exposures on television? There has certainly been plenty. It's time some people stopoed looking the other way.

Im all for following fashion trends, but,
killing innocent animals for pure vanity, to wear their furs for a fashion tend, that surves no other purpose than this is beyond wrong, it is SICK!. We dont need furs to keep us warm, we have 100's, 1000's of ETHICAL materials we already use for our clothing that are perfectly fine.
They violently slaughter beautiful healthy innocent animals in excruciating ways, and basicly they only half kill them, and then skin them alive while the animals are still squeeling. THIS IS WRONG.
What is NOT wrong is the necessary use of animals skins-as used by Inuits. The difference is they humainly kill the animals for their own survival. They use EVERYTHING on that animal, and ONLY kill when necessary.
-they use the skin for clothes, meat for food, bones to make ornaments and tools, etc. This is survival and necessary because that is their only resources, so they need to hunt to survive.
We dont need a lynx's fur, or a chinchilla's fur to survie, we kill them for vanity.
some people may say well what about killing cattle? well we use them, they are OUR source of food, and necessary to our survival. We also use their meat for food, skins for clothes, tripe for dog food, etc.
so again anything that can be used, IS used.
Beautiful animals endangered or not, shouldn't be violently slaughtered for our vanity. Modern technology has produced identical patterns of animals, and textures that are FAUX, but are so realistic to the touch, and to look at, that when put side by side with a real fur coat it would be near impossible to tell them apart.
FAUX FUR gives the oppertunity to wear patterns of fur, but without the guilt, shame and disgust you will have upon society, if you wear real fur.

Incidentally, not all leather, or wool for that matter, is humanely produced. Animal welfare standards are poor in many countries not just China and many animal products come from these countries. The only way to be sure you don't contribute to any animal suffering is to not wear or eat ANY animal products.

I'm perfectly happy with fur if I believed it is obtained in a humane way. It is very
sad that animals are killed so cruelly in China (i'm not concerned about whether they are cats
and dogs, that is just the cute/pet factor kicking in, I'm concerned about their treatment), but why the connection with high street fur in western countries. Are the loons here seriously suggesting that if I went and bought a £1500 mink coat for my girlfriend that it would actually turn out to be made of cat? I think the ravers should be lobbying the target markets of the chinese fur trade rather than fur itself.
Fur is a superior, greener material to plastic petrochemical derived faux fur - it is natural, warmer and far softer to the touch. What really grates is the way that chickens in battery farms are kept in *horrendous* conditions yet far, far less fuss is made. How is eating something that will feed you for a day LESS wasteful than wearing a garment that could last you a lifetime? I see no moral distinction between eating and wearing animals - it's a 100% natural thing we've all been doing for hundreds of thousands of years. I think it's the children of the 20th/21st centuries living in the matrix-like world of post industrialisation and wearing plastic coats that have the warped perspective.
To sum up: Eat animals, wear animals, kill them humanely.

I am a meat eater, but I draw the line at cruelty, and killing just for fur, Vi.

By saying that she would wear fur, Nigella Lawson shows her ignorance of how the fur
is produced. Leather and sheepskin are by-products of the meat industry which is controlled. However, the fur industry uses fur from the Far East from dogs who have been squashed together into tiny cages under very cruel conditions and are then skinned alive. Would she like to see her children's pets treated in this way and then wear the result? Also, in order to produce one mink coat it takes a lot of animals who have also been kept in small cages for their lifetime. This is now outlawed in this country but obviously continues in others.
If no-one wore fur, this barbaric cruelty would eventually cease because it would not be profitable.

I totally agree with comment number 12, there is no reason for people to wear real fur and it sickens me to think that people think it's ok to do so.
People should see the suffering of the animals, it's disgusting.
We should put an end to it!!

Fur should be left on the animal it was intended for not some vain ignorant human being, to kill an animal purely for its fur is sick and that goes for the people who think its acceptable, I bet they wouldn't like to be skinned alive like some animals are would they !

What right do you fur wearers have to allow skinning of live animals? Go to animalsaviours.org and watch the horror that you create.
Fashion designers...Shame on you. Some people believe that designers are overrated, overpaid and generally dumb. I don't agree, apart from those who perpetuate the cruel fur trade through their fashion designs. wake up!

If we lived as Eskimos, ancient Scots, Scandinavians, or Russians - then clearly fur would be a necessity, albeit still a cruel one.
If we feel the need to lord it over others by wearing the skins of 50 caged Mink, skinned alive, just to show off how many £1,000's we can afford to fritter, frankly, I give up, and I'm glad I am too poor to breathe the same air as such people - and I pity their next life.
As a man sow, so shall he reap - do unto others as you would (will) have them do unto you - for every action, there is an equal and opposite re-action.
These are universal laws, and all the money in the world will not save us from them. Meat is murder - it's bad enough to kill animals to eat, let alone just to pose. Plants don't bleed red blood or scream and writhe when killed - nor do they have eyes, ears, nose, genitalia etc as we do - plants do have consciousness, but it is covered and they are the God-given food for mankind, as stated by Moses in Genesis:
"Lo, I give you the herb bearing seed [grains], and the tree bearing fruit, and this shall be yours for meat [Gk. "brome", Eng. "food"]
"But the flesh [Gk. "kreas", Eng. "meat"] with the blood thereof, and the life thereof, shall *not* be yours to eat.
"And at the hands of those who require such foods, I shall require their blood,
"Nay, I shall require the blood of all living creatures"
"Butter and honey shall he eat, that he shall know to refuse the evil, and accept that which is good" Isiaiah, referring to Lord Jesus, the future avatara
"He that killeth an ox, is as if he slew a man." Isiaiah 66.3
(Please note that paying a killer (butcher, slaughterer, supermarket, burger bar) to kill on your behalf has always been accessory to murder under law, both human and cosmic.) The law "Do Not Kill" does not apply only to Jews & Christians, neither does it extend only to human beings; still, it's a tall order to wish for a humane, vegetarian society when we can't even keep from genocide over oil, race, dollars & domination.
Blessed are the peacemakers - and pity those who kill for food, sport, profit or fashion - they should observe their quarry carefully, for this will be their fate after death.

I think iti is hypocritical to attack wearing fur coats if you own a leather wallet or handbag. If animals are bred for it we should use all the animal and pick and choose. Tha comment about eskimos is particularly relevant.

I always verbally challenge real fur wearers in the street. If we all did it the wearer would soon get the message.
We need to make a stand and that means speaking up for what you feel is wrong. Let them know it's not ok!

Looks like it's time to buy a few tins of red paint and get active out on the streets again.
It always makes me laugh when petty bourgeois so called 'animal lovers',such as my mother, and a few on here complain about their sensibilities being offended by such programmes.
Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil and it'll all somehow miraculously go away.....just pretend it ain't happening eh?

In my opinion, every lady should be able to make her own choice of whether to wear or not to wear fur. I do agree that it is a grey area, however, sometimes when you see some of those ladies clothes you just can't resist.
They'll keep producing them anyways so why not "go with the flow"?

It's ignorant people like yourself who needs to understand the fur trade...
The majority of furs that are in circulation are from cats and dogs. Where do they get those animals from? They are or were stolen pets. How would you like it if all of a sudden one of your pets went missing and a few weeks later you saw someone walking down the street wearing a fur coat that looks identical to your missing pet?
I advise you watch this clip to see how animals are really treated for their fur.

If you still agree to the fur trade after watching that video then I really hope any and all like you die a slow death.
