Our resolve to cut out much of the electricity usage in our household has actually been an environmentally and financially friendly one. Where we used to leave all of our electronic equipment plugged in, we now unplug everything unless it is being used and have saved a pretty penny as a result! (And perhaps the only negative is waiting for five minutes for the Sky box to come on!)

I have given up using the car for every trip to the shops and have saved money as well as getting fit.
Mind most money saved is because I can't be bothered to walk to the shops.

To start with I have not left any electrical stuff on standby I will turn the thermostat on the central heating down 2 notches and put it on timer so it is not on when I am out, I have also had no holidays abroad this year, and I waste less food by buying just what I need. And I have given up eating Chocolate bars.

I've decided to get warm at work and dress in extra layers at home so as to cut down on my heating bill!!!
My house is on the cold side but when I get to work it's like being on holiday in the bahamas, minus the cocktails - but I'm working on that bit!

I did not give up driving for any green reasons but because after a bout of illness, about eighteen months ago, I did not feel that my driving ability was sufficiently safe anymore. Instead I use a bicycle for all my short journeys. My house is about 2 miles from the centre of town. I can cycle there in less time than a car; park, for free, near to the shops; and have zero travel costs.

For longer journeys I take the train. That means that, while travelling, I can read, sleep or legally use a mobile phone. Tickets may be expensive but it would take a lot of journeys for them to exceed the cost of running a car.

I feel and am healthier for cycling and would recommend it to anyone. It is one sure way of being green as well as having a positive payback.

I usually buy a lot of Animé DVDs or the odd CD.
But I've made a rule that I only buy one a month of either a DvD or CD and if I don't buy within the month then it carries on to next month so that I can by two items, and if not that month then I can buy three items and so on...

And roughly that saves me about £30 a month.

I also tend not to buy expensive clothes when I buy them, (I was never intrested in clothes much any how) And I make my own Jewellrey, and I made a keyring the other day similar to the ones I see in Goth places for about £10, well I made one for £1. I buy sale items or cheaper items and customise to suite my self.

And because I go to Collage I bring my own packed lunch instead of eating out.

(sorry this is a lot of stuff)

And instead of painting on canvases, I paint on arcrylic primed cardboard which I prime myself, or peices of off cuts of self primed wood that nobody wants.

And I do walking the other day I walked part of the Lisburn road, around Belfast city centre, and from Castle court to the WoodVale Park and home again.

This a strange way to beat the rising gas and electricity prices and for me to 'save' some money! I moved here 2 1/4 years ago and inherited gas and electric token meters from the previous tenant. On receiving my statement saw I was paying a daily standing charge on these things so I wasn't actually getting my full quota of gas and electric, so I contacted the energy company and I have to pay £100.00 to get them taken out and replaced by normal meters! Considering I have paid at least £240.00 in standing charges I am not too happy. The only good thing to come out of it is that at least when they are in I will be paying for gas and electric used and no daily charge. I feel as though I have been penalised for no reason and surely these meters should be taken out free if some else moves into the premises. Has anyone else come across this problem?
