Carrie Grant asked if Simon Cowell is strangling the pop industry, or saving it.
Miranda Krestovnikoff was in Manchester looking at how forensic techniques made it possible to investigate and successfully prosecute the poacher of a Goshawk taken from the wild.

STING...he is so right about the x factor,,,it is a show for producing clones.
but the public bite back ,,that is why the pathetic duo keep going on.

I love the show and Sting, but he really needs to get rid of the beard x

The is a great music scene in England in the underground. In my hometown for example we have a great small rock club called The Matrix, which hosts DIY rock shows. Bands which play are both local and national. Some of the acts which have played there have gone on to become more well known, such as Enter Shikari, Bring Me The Horizon and Get Cape, Where Cape, Fly. Every time I go a gig there, it's quite exciting, because you never know what it's gonna be and is almost always refreshing and interesting. The X-factor isn't about music. it's a bout money and manufacturing an act, not allowing them to express themselves... but the X-factor is not the only music scene.

Here's hoping Adrian or Christine ask Sting what's inspired his beard. Is he off to search for the egg of Mantumbi?
Seen him on loads off programmes but no-one's asked him yet. Very frustrating - it's a cracker.

have always loved sting as a singer,,,but if he is trying to re invent himself,,,well dear o dear o dear.
sad to see rock stars of my youth(may be telling a porkie at that) singing such rubbish.........
he will be on morris dancing next week.
has Miranda Krestovnikoff ever been so far north?

Nice to see Sting but he does seem like the traditional ageing rocker (like Bill Nighy in Love Actually)-why the fuss over the x-factor-if it is enjoyable people will watchy it-if not they will watch SCD-if the acts are good they will sell records, like Leona or Alexandra-if not they will fade away like Leon Jackson and Steve Brookstein-theres very little live music in pubs and clubs now-in fact there is very few pubs and clubs since supermarkets started selling cheap booze-and I am sure if Sting was invited to appear on the x-factor next week he would be accept immediately.

, djwhatsoccurin.......i am a singer in a duo,,,we are out 2/3/4 nights a week in pubs and clubs,,,loads of live stuff out there if you want it.
what is wrong with x factor?...in some ways nothing just as long as you treat it just as a bit of entertainment like homes under the hammer or bargain hunt.
what does it do?
it keeps music exactly where it is...clone upon clone upon clone.
agents in the club entertainment business are signing up 20 year old clones that are dying a death in clubs.
do i take music forward ? no.
that is not my job,,,,but the new people coming through have a duty to move music forward.
if you think x factor does that ,,,well ????

I do not wish to unkind but these two presenters seemed to be totally in awe of the guest Gordon Sumner (stagename Sting).
This entertainer 'Sting' is a very talented and interesting person but the level of sycophancy shown by the two presenters was truly excruciating, capped by the male presenter asking Sting to tell us which classic music CD to buy this Christmas.
Nevermind, the falcon story was excellent!

14-fair point but the music world changed long before x-factor-"video killed the radio star" proved to be an accurate title as once MTV and the other music channels came on stream the video became far more important than the music-Pete Waterman is keen to point out now that he always saw Kylies talent-but at the time he just saw her as one of the many clones that Stock, Aitken and Waterman were producing. I was at a disco recently and many of the modern songs were ignored-"you to me are everything", by the real thing (circa 1976) had everyone dancing-similarly in the theatre, retro musicals like Grease play to packed houses and compilation CDs also sell very well-most Christmas songs well be re-releases (not Slade again!!)-I think its just a sign of the times.

djwhatsoccurin....you make a fair point too.
there will always be music nostalgia,,,great music lives forever.
i do not see great music coming from ANY winner(or loser) of the x factor.

I can understand why you may have felt that the presenters were in awe of Sting, but I don't think that was the case. Sting may just be quite a difficult guy to interview. Many times he was virtually mono syllabic, but not when he was bragging about making a pile when went back on the road with the Police. Not nice to hear a gloater when loads of people are losing their jobs.
May I say that Christine look rather womanly tonight (nice), instead of the usual mini-skirted totty.

Good show tonight. Nice to see Carrie Grant again - she seems like a good presenter.
Re 15 & 18: yes, the big drawback tonight was the guest. I've always found him intolerable to listen to - always seems to be saying how great or how rich he is (and, quelle surprise, he's at it again tonight, aspointed out in post 18). As per posst 15, I was also appalled at the sycophantic behavour by Christine (whom I don't often, if ever, criticise). Let's face it, the last good work he did was with The Police in their heyday, a long time ago.

remember........even if you do not donate another penny to children in need you have donated already.
bbc staff singing "for us" for children in need or diving off the high board are being paid to do it........
i understand that to be the case,,,,for example 8% of tonights show was given over to promoting children in need.
adrian and christine are paid to present the one show....
i would have no problem if they gave up 8% of tonights fee to the charity.
everytime a bbc presenter promotes for the event the fee should be donated.
i am against the children in need using other shows to promote it.
it is a part of work for the presenters so do not feel they are "giving",,they are not

oneeyedjack @ 18
I am a bit handicapped here as I watch very little television but from the little I have seen, I wish it was Piers Morgan doing the Sting interview.
Morgan would would definately have asked the 'tantric' question, also he would probably taken the mickey about Sting not even noticing that his accountant had diddled him out of some £12 million pounds.
And for the coup-de-grace, probed the Trudie-I'm-superior-to-everybody-even-though-I-was-brung-up-in-a-
Council-House relationship.
To be fair, Sting himself seems quite modest given the effect he seems to have on many people, and is quite happy, in context, to be known as Gordon-from-Wallsend.

I agree with everything you say and would love to see him fend of some of those points.
On Trudi...spot on.
Problem the One Show has is that it goes out way before the watershed and cannot get its teeth into anything in the depth that you suggest.
Complain about this comment
oneeyedjack ... at least sting sang live even if badly and for only 30 seconds.
i thought the show tonight was snooozealong telly...hard to remember 20 minutes after it was on and so little to discuss.
pre/post watershed.if you want to entertain the public the time shouldnt matter,,,but when you have guests interested in promoting something you get what you pay for....the show is in need of a revamp.

What the hell was Sting trying to be? He looks like he was about to go routing through some bins to find some fresh cardboard to sleep under. I've seen totally falling down drunk homeless alcoholics with better haircuts that that! No wonder he keeps bragging about how much money he's got - he's probably waiting for someone to haul him off to a soup kitchen and a homeless shelter! Also, along with others on this blog, as a long time admirer of Christine, I felt quite disappointed at the shameless fawning over Sting that was going on. Really Christine - have some pride - I almost threw up!

Someone help me out here, I fell asleep and woke up to find someone with red [and I mean red and not auburn] hair, dressed very oddly, I'm afraid I couldn't tell you what she was introducing/talking about/commenting. Can anyone tell me what was going on?

I agree with post 18 . I have a feeling it was difficult to interview Sting . Christine was maybe trying to fill spaces, when he grunted a sentence or two?did not come across as very forthcoming on anything really ?reserved, mean and moody ?who knows ?believe Christine was being polite, charming and doing her job .Hokey think you would be an ideal guest ?and you could sing ?liven things up !

Sometimes I wonder if I watch the same show as some of the other bloggers. I certainly didnt see Christine fawning, she was just being polite and welcoming to her guest as she always is. I actually thought Sting spoke quite eloquently about the X factor and about his album. I think for once the show appeared to be left with time to fill at the end, which is why Adrian was pushing him for a cd recommendation. I think the Children in Need criticism is also a little unnecessary, plenty of presenters give their time free of charge, and Sir Terry who has come in for some flak for it, does plenty of work for it in his own time. And it raises a fabulous amount of money for good causes, so it seems churlish to criticise.

Sorry about #34.
Many celebs do charity work and many do it for free and for their genuine interest in that charity.
There are many others who do charity gigs for fat fees and any flak that was directed at those who were found to be being paid enormous fees, was well deserved.
Currently the media have many presenters questioning MP's et al, about financial renumeration, when many of the presenters themselves are in positions which are so overrated and so grossly overpaid, that they should all be willing to give up some time for free.

Sting was a waste of time he was boring, he had notting to say
it was like trying to get blood out of a stone.!!!!

33-Children in need has been a fixture on TV for many years and does support many good causes but there is this slight unease that entertainers on screen portray themselves as worthy altruistic people and viewers who do not contribute are mean and selfish-however this is not so-no doubt we will have "specials" from Eastenders and The Bill etc, but these will be performed by actors being paid their normal salary-similarly we will see "bite size" bits of west end musicals which are excellent free adverts for the shows-many people watching cannot afford to contribute.
36-Sting was awful but better than he usually is-he normally drones on in a very patronising way about some "cause" he is in to at the time!!

I agreed with Sting that X Factor produces clones - but with one major exception and that is Rhydian. He's noone's clone. And he's been 'on the road' with a 22 night sell-out tour, creating his fanbase just as Sting suggested. I can't be the only one who misses him on X Factor and wants him back. All these people do too - http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/rhydianonxfactor/ adn these as well http://twitition.com/ieo6l If you want to hear some quality this year, let's hear him again.

Should have said well done to the show for the amount of money raised so far for Children In Need !!and post 33 agree , and as someone said the word patronising, I think that is the way Sting came across.

Well I certainly love the "Curious Sting" and I got goosies listening to his deep soulful, folk songs - very deep, meaningful and passionate. I for one will be buying his Latest CD. Only negative is that beard!! Sting is certainly unique and an individual and I for one respect and admire his art and talent. Well Done! With Luv, Light and Liberty Donna Africa xxx

38-agree with what you said about Rhydian-he obviously realised that the x-factor is a springboard to a future career, but it does involve lots of HARD WORK-I think it is that part that many wannabees find difficult.

It struck me that there seemed to be some strain between the presenters and Sting; it was if they did not know what to say to him.
