What did you think of The One Show? Guest: Tony Robinson
Adrian and Christine were joined by Tony Robinson.
Lucy Siegle took a look at the government's car scrappage scheme.
The pre-prepared sandwich market is big business in the UK. Simon Rimmer discovered that we're not always getting what we think we're paying for.
Gyles Brandreth explored the causes and treatments for Season Affective Disorder (SAD), which one in 50 people in the UK are affected by during winter months.
It's bonfire night tonight so The One Show's Marty Jopson showed us the science behind the bang, fizz and sparkle of fireworks.
And, don't forget either Dan Snow or Dr Sarah Jarvis will have to face the music tomorrow and sing 'Dancing Queen' in aid of BBC Children in Need.
Your donations decide!

Yyour article on car scrappage was interesting, but did not mention the main winner apart from the manufacturers, many of whom are foreign, is the Government. The Treasury, give only £1000 of the £2000 offered, the other £1000 is made up by the manufacturer, but the Treasury recovers more than its outlay, by VAT at 15%, and New car tax.

Lucy was wearing a Seaforth Highlanders Tweed jacket on her last report.
I wonder if she has a connection with this regiment since amalgamated with the Camerons to form the Queens Own Highlanders, now just the Highlanders since the amalgamation with the Gordons.

Ahh.. true to form of the lefty luvvies at the Beeb... same old advocates of New Labour idealism trotted out - first Ben - one of the largest private contributors to Labour followed swiftly by Tony - ex member of the National Executive. Well done Beeb but the cause is already lost....

For me the scrappage scheme is no good at all. I have a 10 yr old car because it's all I can afford. Lets say a car costs £10000. With scrappage, it would cost me £8000. If I could afford £8000 for a car, why would I drive around in an old banger that cost me £250! There is no way I could trade my car in under any scheme right now, and I suspect there are thousands of others like me in the same boat.

Isn't that somewhat dodgy for Tony Robinson to mention Ancestry.co.uk when he is hired by them on thier website? Surely he should at least mention that he has an association with them and say that of course there are other geneaology websites available.

I'm a SAD case! I do have a lightbox, but find it hard to use it first thing in the morning for the recommended time as I'm usually rushing around trying to get to work! I had to result to antidepressants to get me through, maybe I should try emigrating?!
I love sunny days in the winter as I can really feel the difference it makes to my mood. On bad days, I find even basic decisions tough to make. I can function for my job, but that's about it!

Dominic Littlewood's advice was mis-guided. The Scrappage Scheme is not all it seems and has had a very detrimental effect in some areas of our economy.
1 - The Government does not pay anything! Their £1000 contribution is more than made up for by the amount it collects in VAT. In real terms it makes a profit on any new car that costs more than £7700 - most do!
2 - Manufacturers increased their prices to cover most of their £1000 contribution. Just before, or just after, the announcement of scrappage most manufacturers put new car prices up by about £700 - more in some cases. This means that people trading in a banger are paying for most of the manufacturers contribution themselves. More so when you also consider that most people have not even negotiated on the price of their new car. They have taken the 'headline' scrap offer on their banger and then paid full list price on the new car. Additional discounts are still available!
3 - The increase in new car prices means that those without a banger or one that doesn't qualify are paying more for their new cars.
4 - A tier of used cars is being scrapped - very wasteful. This means that used car prices have increased quite dramatically this year. People that whould have bought a 10 year old car - newly qualified drivers, those wanting a small 2nd car for family use etc. - are having to buy a younger car than they normally would have done. These cars have shot up in value since scrappage was announced, as have others given the shortage of used cars in the market. A pretty average 3-4 year old car has gone up by about a £1000 this year.
Scrappage?? Some benefit.., most do not!!

weak show tonight-the on-going joke about Adrians sandwich was tiresome but he seems to be putting on weight-he always "carried a bit of timber" but now he seems to be like a beached whale at times.
8-our local garage has taken in quite a few scappage cars and most look fine and still useable-as you say it is still a huge financial leap to a new car and this is probably why people are going for the cheaper overseas/Korean makes-the garage owner has said that before the scheme it was motability vehicles that just about kept things afloat and of course that was "our money"
11-many of feel low in the miserable winter months and of course we now have to, in the interests of the environment use low energy lightbulbs which take ages to warm up and then give out very little light-it is amazing that the govt know that the climate will be much warmer in 100 years time but havent a clue what will happen to the economy tomorrow!

Here's testing the theory that if one's real name and location are included there is a greater chance of someone on the show responding.
I very much support the aims of Children in Need and it is good that The One Show is doing its bit. Hopefully, Adrian and Christine will put themselves forward for one of the activities and not leave it to everyone else.
The amount raised last week will be welcomed by the charity but if I understand the process correctly, the total of c£25,000 only represents donations from 5000 viewers. Surely we can do better than this and perhaps Adrian and Christine will try to drum up support from more of the several million viewers of the show tomorrow.

you mentioned www.ancestry.co.uk/ww1 for finding WW1 relations deaths, I went there but for the /ww1 I got the 404 error with ... We're sorry. The page you tried to access is no longer available.. so they're not linking it with WW1 or any other thing without joining, that means paying, you ought to try links before advertising them.

What a lot of people don't realise is that a sizable part of our population, like me, suffer from SAD in the summer. I hate everything about summer and dread the arrival of spring and the continuing months through to mid September. The long dark nights and the cooler weather brings so much relief from sometimes high temps and humidity, bad hay fever, anti social behaviour and lager louts in the streets, bonfire and barbecue smoke, people in their gardens with partys, loud music and noise etc., insects and wasps. Just a small selection of things that bring terror to some of us.

The item about WW1 records had me rushing for my computer. Unfortunately your information was misleading because it is not possible to view all WW1 records. Many of them were destroyed by enemy action in WW2. You really shouled be careful about making sweeping statements.

You must agree that the posts at #2 & #14 have advanced our knowledge far more that The One Show's offering. Why does the producer not seek to raise the standard. Then the show could be interesting and helpful.

23-you have probably realised that this site contains a variety of opinions and I do think not everyone will agree with your Bob Geldorf "give us your money" take on Children In Need-I do not want A and C pleading with me to give money-I subscribe to my own charities and pay my licence fee. There is aloso more general disquiet about telethons and the fact that BBC becomes a commercial body for one night, where staff from various organisations boast about raising a few pounds knowing full well they would have to pay thousands to advertise on commercial TV.If BBC replaced CIN with an evening of classic comedies, gave the money saved to CIN, added Jonathan Ross's salary when he was suspended, cancel all expense claims of BBC staff for one month-the money raised would probably equal the amount raised by CIN in its present form.-I also repeat the query-how much did around the world in 80 days cost to make and how much will it raise for CIN?

The show seems to have cut down on the time given to recorded pieces and more to the studio guest. So much better when the guest is not being hassled into zipping it. Definite improvement.
CB's immune system must be lacking, she has had that cold for ages now. Obviously the cures posted here have been no good.

re #34: jadedoldie,
It's because the freezing kills off harmful bacteria bearing in mind that Sushi is eaten raw. This regulation only applies to commercial food preparation. You can make your own Sushi at home but for safety sake it must be truly fresh. In other words go out and catch it yourself.

A great programme on the beeb last week investigated the real beneficiaries of the scrappage scheme (the dealers and brokers). One manufacturer admitted that only up to 7% of parts on a new car are manufactured in England. I found both Dominic and Tony Robinson's almost fawning enthusiasm for and recommendation of the scheme quite disturbing on the One Show. So much discussion about the impartiality of the BBC, this resembled a huge government promotion. Should we not consider the tens of thousands (or more) of perfectly usable cars being trashed in a breakers yard and squashed into a chunk of metal as an offence? The waste of resources is staggering, and the cars being purchased do not necessarily have much improved fuel efficiency, one of the main supposed benefits of the scheme (people are free to swap their old 40mpg fiesta for a new 20mpg SUV).
Why not extend the logic to the government offering to smash up say, your perfectly usable TV, give you more than you could sell it for, and offer you a much more expensive new one at a discount, or maybe to offer to knock your house down so you could buy a newer model... Perhaps the One Show should either balance out a view on contentious issues, or not feature them at all.

Here we go again.!! The BBC trot out another apologist for New Labour.
Can you seriously believe, that Mr Robinson actually said to the effect that our national finances were no worse than other countries!!
Are we really expected to take this nonsense seriously? Has it escaped thia silly Baldrick-person that his buddies of the Blair/Brown-axis have, with their criminal incompetence, presided over the racking up such a huge national debt that it won't be paid off for generations, and that they have even out-done Wilson & Healy by allowing the Nation to suffer it's worst financial disaster since,....er, well, ..ever!
So please BBC, save us from B-list "celebrities" coming onto the TV at licence payer's expense to lie to us, to insult our intelligence, and to spout pro-labour propaganda like some latter-day Goebbels.
...............I wouldn't be surprised if you have Jo Brand lined up again soon, to try and further fool the nation with similar poppycock.

I'm not trying to be picky, but Gyles Brandreths report into the medical condition SAD disturbed me more than a little. When he first talked to the prof, Anne Farmer, she clearly stated that it is a serious mental health problem, a form of depression.
Gyles, imo, towards the end of his report, dismissed the condition, and made light of it. It's not something that can or should be made to seem as dismissive as I thought he did. Light boxes, for one, do not help immediately, or for everyone.
I have never been diagnosed with SAD, but I do have a long history of depression, and I would hate to think that he would do a report about major depression in such a carefree way.

Hi there, I watched the episode about SAD and wanted to let you know that there is a revolutionary new swedish innovation which is very effective against SAD and indeed a whole host of other issues such as vitamin D deficiency, brittle bones, joint pains and weak immune system. Its a sunlight simulator where a whole room is filled with health giving sunlight. Please see www.realsunlight.co.uk
We have jut finished an installation at a doctors practise in Harley Street and we think it would make for a very interesting feature on a future theoneshow.
