What did you think of The One Show? Guest: Ben Elton

Post categories:

The One Show Team | 14:28 UK time, Wednesday, 4 November 2009

Adrian and Christine were joined on The One Show by Ben Elton.

David Cameron isn't happy with the number of women MPs in his party. His solution? All women candidate shortlists. Matt Allwright investigated whether positive discrimination works.

Andrew Neil took a stroll down Fleet Street.

Justin Rowlatt travelled to Cultybraggen Prisoner of War Camp near the village of Comrie in Scotland, to meet former inmate Heinrich Steinmeyer.

Christopher Biggins made a gripping film about stage fright.

And Dan Snow joined Adrian and Christine in the studio to talk about his BBC Children in Need challenge, the cause of his nerves.

On Friday, either Dan or Dr Sarah Jarvis will be singing Dancing Queen to the nation. Your donations decide who faces the music. Watch the video below to find out more.

How naive to imagine that Parliament will suddenly have a gender balance with all female constituency lists! Perhaps if they tried to have a family friendly workplace - keeping normal hours (as Scottish Parliament has done) the equal opps issues will follow.
Now, for real equality Mr Cameron - how about all unemployed lists for a proportion of constituencies? Now that would be progressive - people with good CVs and experience who have been paid off as a result of the recession. They would appreciate the salary at least!

Look out Matt Allwright, Harman will soon make sure that you can't compete for a job because women must be chosen first.

Imagine the lefty outrage if the recruitment of primary school teachers, nurses and other jobs were all male shortlists due to the appalling lack of gender diversity - far worse than in parliament. And for that matter what about the inequality in the Department of Health where on average women are paid considerably more than men.

And just to shoot down this 'Lehman Sisters' nonsense about women changing everything for the good, it was a woman who invented Credit Default Swaps which resulted in the spread of toxic assets across the system.

Selecting by gender has nothing to do with representation. The only thing that matters in politics is diversity of opinion and what is actually required is more independent MPs that can only be brought about by loosening the power of the party whips.

We didn't need this discrimination to get a female PM or for that matter a Jewish PM, two things the US has never achieved. I'm with Widdecombe and I'll never vote for or respect a women candidate who hasn't had to compete against all-comers.

This ill-informed reporting contributes to a mis-understanding of history.

The One Show did not make the Nazis seem humane and normal. They said quite clearly that the Nazi Leaders were the bad ones, not the rank & file.

Anyway, Scotland had many prisoners of war from both Germany and Italy and it should be to our pride that many stayed on after release to start new lives in Scotland when the war was over. Yes, we treated people well, even the enemy.

Your observation that some nights are better than others is germane to the subject and revolutionary in the extreme. I will bear it in mind the next time I watch the show. Which nights do you think are better than others? Maybe it is Tuesdays, do you think? Though I must confess that most nights seem alike to me. It gives me comfort to know that The One Show brings you so much pleasure. Why did you feel it necessary to share with us that you are on and extended visit to the US? I am impressed. Is it nice there. What a pity you will not be able to see Christine's dresses or hear her laughter.

I was even on holiday and took no part in anything that evening, obviously, but was still sacked immediately. How unfair is that? The very union they took on thereafter caused several stoppages prior to the sackings by refusing to repair the out-dated equipment gave us to use (it was obsolete well before we were to use it). "You seem quite angry" Not anger - disgust, well yes - and anger, what gives you the right to be so nasty to people? The only reason for this now is because you simply just could not resist yet another snide comment - this time aimed at me (post23) - grow up!

"You will learn that your anger will often damage you and not your intended victim."

Is that some kind of cock-eyed expanation for why you write such unpleasant comments? Again - see your GP, anger isn't healthy - and a BBC comments page isn't the place to be letting it out.
