What did you think of The One Show? Guest: Geoffrey Palmer
Adrian and Christine were joined in the studio by Geoffrey Palmer.
Tony Blair is tipped to be the new president of Europe. Political Commentator Anne McElvoy took us back to Sedgefield where the former Prime Minister's career began.
It's Garden Watch week! In Hampshire, Mike Dilger and Miranda Krestovnikoff tried to outsmart a fox.
Gyles Brandreth visited an English hamlet outside Stevenage to see the inspiration for Howard's End by E M Forster.
For Children In Need, Lucy Siegle and Michael Douglas are pitted against each other to take the diving board challenge. The one who raises the most money will have to jump 10 metres (33 feet) off a diving board!
Both Lucy and Michael are scared witless of heights - Paddy O'Connoll explored why so many of us have this fear.
What did you think of the show? Add your comment.

I do not think a lightweight magazine type programme like this should get involved with politics, especially to push the case of 'Blair for President' thereby alienating over half the population who still think of him as a war criminal.

Hi Gang!
For the first time in my life I feel trapped. If Blair becomes the EU President, I don't want to live within the EU but where can I go?
Isn't it awful to loathe someone so much or for someone to create such loathing by their past deeds?
I cannot stand the "man" or anything he stands for!
Sorry!!
Fabulous show! Thank you.

Why was the one show hyping up Tony Blair for el presidency of the United States of Europe hardly an unbiased view on the man. The reporter Anne McElvoy nearly fell over swooning after Tony and Geoffrey Palmer was almost hushed up by Adrian because he was saying the truth.Yes its a topical show but shouldn't be used to endorse Labour.

What an apalling blatant advert for Tony Blair and his ego.
Completely disgusted that the BBC are using peak time programmes as a plug for Blair.
How anyone can think he should be given another vehicle for his vast ego to be utilised on is beyond me!

What concerns me most about the new post of President of Europe, is not so much Tony Blair being hailed for the post by all and sundry, it's the fact that someone we are not allowed to vote for in a position that we are not allowed to have a say on will be representing us on the world stage. Nothing like fascism in free Europe is there?

I thought the same. This really is a very pro Tory show, and some of the comments made by the presenters are pathetic. she makes personal throw away statements about people, the other week she said that Brown was not a people person. Can she back that comment up with research or personal observation? The Anne person who did the piece tonight was also poor. She should have presented a more balanced piece. Also a person with her dress and hair sense shouldn't call anyone. I will not be watching the show again until it, and its presenters, grows up. Just one final question. Did the producer go to Eton?

Hi There, I would just like to say that I do not expect a party political boadcast for any party on The One Show. Apart from the 1 hour on Friday the show is not long enough. It is much better to have educational subjects made into entertainment, as the rest of the show tonight, so far, seems to be. Please leave the political broadcasts to the politically biased programmes that are already provided for on the TV. Please do not try to be a programme that you are not! The One Show is wonderful as it is. Thank you. PS No I do not want Tony Blair as the European President, if or when the job becomes available.

Blair for EU president? This disgraceful liar who manipulates evidence to ensure his view wins is clearly uniquely qualified to lead the European political maggots feeding on the carcass of complacent taxpayers. If Blair gets this job there is absolutely no hope whatsoever of any vestige of honesty in politics. Blair has done more harm to the UK political system than anyone. He will do even more damage to a thoroughly disgraced, unaccountable (and unaudited) EU political heirarchy focused only on personal hubris. Why is BBC is pushing him for this job? They need to think of a rather better argument than he has "Motorcade quality". Heaven help us all.

Being new to this and already posted a Comment I meant to ask if the BBC reads these comments because I find it totally inappropriate that they have used this programme to promote Tony Blair and Labour. They should be ashamed of themselves. Tony Blair deserves to be tried for war crimes and Labour should be tried for treason after selling us all out to Europe with not one British citizen having a say in Britain's future.Whoever decided to push Tony Blair on tonight's show should be sacked along with that fawning reporter....

love blog 1,,,spot on.
cannot make my mind up whether the tony blair topic helped or hindered him.
let me pin my colours to the mast,,i am a labour voter but i did not and do not like tony blair.
i tend to side with the opinion he is a war criminal and as geoff palmer said i do not think he should be representing us in any way.
but does he represent us?
he travels the world earning a fortune as ex prime minister as an un elected representative,he does not stand for me.
it will not matter who is EU president, the EU is deeply flawed and needs root and branch surgery to make it work as it should.
it will steam on in the way it wants without any thought for great britain and having blair as president will give us no advantage.
it was interesting that adrian asked mr palmer for his opinion which was anti blair,,adrian responded defending ,what a surprise.
we found out tonight that a fox came into the garden and because he stayed at the bottom of the garden the guinea pigs were safe.....wow,,nature on the one show

Too may people blame the presenters for the lack 'respect' shown to the guests. The problem with this programme is that the recorded, timed pieces just don't leave enough time for the guests and the problem lies not with the presenters, but with the show's producers.
Many a night you can 'see' the presenters being given the hurry up to stop the guest talking - just watch the reflection of the presenters when they think they are not in shot.

Once again Adrian Chiles and the Production team are subversley pushing the Labour party under the guise of so called Entertainment The sycophantic 'Backside' licking of Adrian and Anne McElvoy (Ex Scottish?) really is sickening. Tony Blair and Gordon Brown are between them responsible for bringing the United Kingdom to it's knees. What with unlimited and irresponsible Immigration ( We don't have any figures about who comes in and who goes out of the country they said for 12 years, which could't possibly be an accident and must have been a deliberate ploy to keep the public as uninformed as possible). Whilst at the same time knowing very well that the vast majority of immigrants who enter this country and rent a place to live, have the right to vote for the Government even if the rent is paid for by the Tax Payer. I wonder how much this had to do with the Labour Governments 'Lack of knowledge' on Immigration? They then went on to sell our 'Gold Reserve' to finance an unsupportable escalation in 'Public Spending', virtually unsupervised, of course, followed inevitably, by the biggest 'Boom and Bust' ever imaginable. Fuelled, of course, by the total 'Free Wheeling' of the 'Banking System' whom the Government forgot to control. They have now got us into such an almighty mess that they are having to 'Print Money' by the billions of pounds to try and stave off a total collapse of the country, after having as well reduced the £ to the level of a so called 'Banana Republic'. All of this behaviour cannot be called 'Careless' but more like 'Criminal'. And now they want to put the ex Prime Minister ( Tony Blair) who was 'Presiding' over the majority of the 12 years of unmitigated and 'Shambolick Disasters' into the 'Presidency' of the E.U., WoW. Perhaps the leaders of the E.U. are not as stupid as we think they are.
In conclusion I think that it's about time that the Governors of the B.B.C were removed from their posts and replaced by a truly none political body, which is,after all, what they are supposed to be.

This is my first post but I felt this so strongly: this programme was not the place for a pro-Blair for EU president political puff. It was a biased, simplistic presentation of a highly controversial potential appointment. As Anne McElvoy was by-lined a political reporter rather than a starry-eyed Blairite, I feel justified in saying that this was very bad journalism indeed, and a worse editorial decision to include it.

1. Tony Blair for EU president-I would prefer Lionel Blair.
2. Is children in need audited-rumour is that around the world in 80 days (tonight at 9) is costing a fortune to produce.
3 Simon Cowell may like Christine but I am sure he prefers himself.
4 BBC does regularly patronise its audience-Countryfile on sunday is a pleasant "rural retreats" type prog with interesting items-then suddenly out of the blue we get, in big letters "John Craven investigates" as though the presenter who has been around since swap shop days is some great sage who is full of wisdom!!

And the governors of the bbc should go but that wont happen either. You have spoken of how many people feel in this country but it wont happen like when they had the BNP on question time I dont agree with them but we all have diff points of view it back fired. His total lack of interest in matters of Europe, in fact, virtually antagonising Europe over many good advanced and essential matters. Europe has cleaned up its foriegn war policies; not Blair he expanded the UK's thereby leaving the Country in a crippled and ridiculed state of bancrupcy. He really doesn't need nor want the job; as he is making $10-12,000,000 per year sucking up to America....What the would he know or be interested with Europe for?

The One Show has stooped to a new low with the Blair piece last night. It was a blatant attempt to revive his shattered reputation and make him palatable to the British people. In common with a large number of contributors, I was disgusted at the pro-Blair propaganda which marred the opening of the show.
The Blair legacy comprises deceit, lies, marginalisation of Parliament, corruption, the 'surveillance society', and cynically allowing an unsustainable flood of immigration.
To have this ego-driven person and his greedy wife back (unelected) on to the political scene as the 'President of Europe' will, I suspect, jam in the craw of most people in this country - even, may I say, many of those who were conned by the 'New Labour Project' into voting for him in '97.
May I express the hope that no-one votes for them again.
The BBC, and the One-Show producers, in their relentless pursuit of 'inclusiveness', 'fairness' and 'impartiality' will preface a forthcoming show with a similar piece on, say, Nick Griffin, Nigel Farage or David Cameron - although, even if a piece on any of these WAS put out, the BBC could never atone for the depths it has plumbed by publicising 'Blair for President'
The snivelling Childs looked quite taken aback when Geoffrey Palmer commented that the Iraq war made Blair unsuitable for this position.
Well done Geoff!!!! At least a minute bit of balance was imposed.

I have never seen such a shameless piece of political propaganda on BBC. The producers should be sacked together with the presenters. Half the program was devoted to promoting Tony Blair for a job which currently does not exist. Viewers are not interested in the political opinions of Adrian and Christine. everynight a very interesting person is on the show hell bent on entertaining us,,,and surprisingly as a public service(from a public service broadcaster) they are very helpull in having the "star" promote a book,cd,cassette(??)dvd,or film...it's great.
i wouldnt watch this show if they didnt,,i would have to watch the shopping channel or bid tv or even go to the late night opening of wh smiths

Thank you Host_Ryan (108), but I cannot find "Words for You" anywhere as an audio cassette?
Did Geoffrey get it wrong?

Hello librarygreyling, the album is not a BBC production - so I can't give you more details than you'll find on the web. I did a web search and this page came up: http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_display/genre/e3i5356929b5d49b89e4564045a3fd8c3c4
That page says that "Words For You" will be released on Nov. 16, on Universal Records. So it may be best to check at your local record shop nearer the release date. Best wishes.

Unfortunately I missed Geoffrey Palmer on The One Show (27/10/09) but my wife was watching and I gather that he made a reading against a background of classical music which was on a CD. Can anyone identify this CD for me so that I can get it for my wife?

Geoffrey Palmer is a nice enough chap, but there were times when he seemed irritated by the questions.
