What did you think of The One Show? Guest: Jamie Cullum
Adrian and Christine were joined by jazz sensation Jamie Cullum.
It's been confirmed that Nick Griffin, the leader of the British National Party, will appear on Question Time tomorrow. Junior Simpson gave us his take on the issue.
Lucy Siegle explained how to travel by train for less.
Over the next few weeks we'll be discovering the stories behind the famous places on the Monopoly board. Tonight, Clare Balding visited Park Lane.
And finally, Aubrey Manning hunted for evidence of a meteorite that hit Scotland a long time ago.

If enough people from ethnic minorities DID join the BNP, would it be possible to change their policies and overthrow their leadership?
Complain about this comment
hashtekar has it exactly right! When the BNP are forced to change their membership policies, people from ethnic minorities should be ENCOURAGED to join and change the policies from within.
Complain about this comment
The BNP can change their constution and I agree non whites won't join the party. However the BNP will claim that they are not to blame as they changed their constitution to allow non white membership. They win both ways - which shouldn't ever be right.

Nick Griffin, the leader of the British National Party got elected fairly, and so did his members, why shouldnt he be on the show???? We have a lot of MPS who have fiddled their exspenses yet only have to pay some back, surely they should be banned as well, after all they have broken the law, at least Nick says how it is and doesnt deliberatley try to deceive!!!!
Maybe all his points aren't correct, but he only says what a lot of people think and are too afraid to say.

The only reason the racist Nick Griffin is even being discussed, is because the Labour government have not listened to the concerns of many British people concerning illegal immigration. I don't believe that the people voting for the BNP are, on the whole rascist bigots, they are just trying to make a point to Gordon Brown as he still refuses to tackle mass illegal immigration which is paramount to the average voters concerns.
"Bad publicity is better than no publicity" and I believe him appearing on the show tomorrow will only fuel his already massive ego

Sorry..probably just being very niave here but find the whole BNP thing a bit scary(this comes from a very blonde/blue eye/anglo-saxon background)....still a bit worried.
Best thing is to vote them in...get them well into parliament/establishment mode, then human nature will take over...and in no time they will be towing the party line, being very quiet and claiming their expenses. Will not actually deal with their vile opinons but will keep them quiet
Complain about this comment
And you don't think the Labour party stealing their slogans "British jobs for British workers" and policies "state homes for young mothers" helps promote the BNP's cause? Just look where the BNP are making inroads - long held Labour constituencies. And for that matter the BBC should stop describing them as far-Right like there are no racists or prejudice on the Left. In fact the BNP manifesto reads like the Labour '83 manifesto. The BNP founders first choice of name for their new party was The Real Labour Party. The BNP are far-Left.
If anyone says they believe in freedom of speech what it really means is that you have to defend your political opponents right to be heard.
The best strategy against the BNP is to haul them into the light of tough interviews and debates. As the saying goes sunlight is the best disinfectant.
You'd be surprised how many people in minority communities support the BNP because many of the settled immigrants vehemently detest the waves of new immigrants and want it to stop. Immigration in mainstream politics has for a long time been taboo because whenever anyone talks about controlled immigration someone pops up (almost always from the Left) to shout "RACIST!" No wonder the BNP are able to capitalise on this issue.
What about the complete lack of concern when Ken Livingstone (who used anti-Semitic language to a Jewish reporter) and George Galloway (a whole career of anti-Semitic comments) are on Question Time? If you allow Livingstone or Galloway on Question Time then you can't deny Griffin.

Partly true i must agree "katesackley", but something needs to happen as this country is rapidly going down hill, in a large many ways.. I try to live within the law, and do my bit as regards the enviroment, but when you call the council with a concern about litter, racial abuse, recyling you just get fobbed off. Nearly all parties are the same just slightly different policies either way they get paid far too much and do far too little!!!

Adrian mentioned out the panarama programme that was on the other night with the Asian family being abused and attacked and what would Nick Griffin think about it? What we have never seen on TV is that white people are getting abused and attacked on asian housing estates. nicholasstacy post 14 is spot on.
The truth about the bigots in that programme was that they would pick on anything that was different. Send a white person down those streets with a prominently displayed crucifix or an orthodox Jew and I bet you'd see a similar reaction. But Christianity isn't on the BBC's list of politically correct victims. Nor is anti-Semitism or racism against white people.

As reported on the bbc news tonight there are likey to be 70 million living in the uk, its overcrowded enough now. The schools and hospitals are in a mess you cant get the kids into the school of your choice, nobody wants the ecotown built next to them, everyone complains when they can't find a parking space in town or gets stuck in congestion. For me the BNP is not about being racist but being practical. The country is already bankrupt how many more does it intend to feed.

I like the One Show for its topical nature, but I do not agree that it should become yet another political bandwagon. I can't be the only person in England that, on the one hand, feels this country is slowly getting saturated with immigrant people, whilst being a strong believer in the wellbeing of all people & races. I feel no animosity at all to non English people, I just don't accept that England should take them all in. I personally feel we should do something towards resolving the problems, in their own countries, that push them into a very dangerous migration, leaving their families to fend for themselves.
Of course this view will be branded racist, but it is a view many people that I have spoken to hold. No doubt some people are atracted to the BNP because they are hearing 'some' or the language they are longing to hear!

I do not understand why every time the BNP is relentlessly vilified on TV by the PC brigade, the attacks always focus on race. The BNP has a whole range of policies covering a variety of topics. The thing that upsets me personally is the appalling cruelty to animals caused by Halal killing. It seems ironic that while some TV personalities are trying to improve the lives of chickens, other creatures are exposed to barbarism, while the authorities look the other way. Which way are we going? Are we moving forward or are we going backwards? We cannot do both!

I hope that when the BNP do appear on Question Time the questioners are intelligent enough to go beyond the issues of race and tackle them on what the rest of the programme is. Do they actually have anything to say about the credit crunch, the future of the NHS or enviromental issues? I doubt it.
More importantly I look forward to them being tackled on their record. They have said much about the arrogance of the major parties. However where they have been elected to local councils, they have shown themselves to be among the most venal, corrupt and downright incompetent councillors in the UK. It is perhaps indicative of their abilities that those wards that had BNP councillors going into to the Euro elections actually saw them get a reduced vote.
We know the BNP positions on race and immigration. Debate with them on these issue is likely to produce more heat than light. Perhaps if we confront them on what else they have got to say and whether they have anything beyond their narrow platform on which to stand.
Moreover, if they are subjected to scrutiny perhaps we will finally see them not merely as racists, but as useless racists. They not only fail to represent Britain, but they are pretty rubbish at representing even that narrow strata of society that elected them.

Re: The BNP. They are a legitimate Political Party so why shouldn't they have the right to go on QT? I think that the other party members are too scared to face them because, although I do not agree with all of their policies, in some respects they do talk some sense. Voters are not stupid. They are just fed up with the same old lies from Labour, The Conservatives & The Lib-Dems (not to mention the corrupt, robbing, expense & tax fiddling MP's). We've had mass immigration for years and where has it got us? This country is in a complete mess. Hospitals, schools and emergency services are struggling to cope. There are housing shortages and job shortages. There are hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants in this country who have slipped through the net. Where is it going to end? This is only a small island. It was on the news tonight that the population will increase to 70million within the next 2 decacdes, and it will be largely down to immigration. Where will they all go? Where will they all live? Either we will have to return to Victorian slum era with about 5 families living in each house in poverty because there is not enough money or food to go round, or the countryside will become a thing of the past because every available space will be used for housing. Let voters decide at election time about the BNP. The party will either sink or swim.

It was very noticable how unbiased[lol] the show was regarding the BNP - Four people against - None for.
Comments like "I am against everything the BNP stand for" from people who are unlikely to have read the BNP manifesto is hardly balanced.
It was also interesting that Holly Johnson made a comment about the misuse of the word "Gay" - When it was homosexuals who started the misuse - To make homosexuality more "acceptable".
It is also noticable that though there is "homophobia" and "islamaphobia" there appears to be no "hetrophobia" or "christianaphobia" - Obviously it is only hetrosexual christians that commit hate crimes.
The comment about the BNP by Adrian Chiles regarding the attacks on Pakistanis shown on TV was totally out of order - Nick Griffin has repeatedly stated he is against any form of violence - Gets your facts right.

I wish to correct you regarding the history of Monopoly. Charles Brace Darrow was taught the game by a group of Atlantic City Quakers in America in the early 1930s, he did not invent it, he merely adapted and marketed it. It is true that had it not been for Darrow it is unlikely that Monopoly would not have been the success that it is today, but the origin of Monopoly can be traced back to 1904 when a game called The Landlord's Game was patented in America by Elizabeth Magie Phillips. The true history of Monopoly would make an interesting TV programme in itself, Charles Darrow died a multi-millionaire while the real inventors of the game received next to nothing.

Just to make a point to the BBC that the BNP are in fact on the far-Left, Yougov did their mega survey of over 30,000 people before the Euro elections and they asked all the people who intended to vote for the BNP what political environment did they grow up in. 47% said they grew up in a Labour supporting environment which was twice as a much as those from a Conservative supporting environment. You can also read straight from Griffin's mouth in the Times today where he says that he is a "National Socialist." The BBC should stop smearing the Right of politics. Prejudice extends across the whole spectrum.

Islam4UK is a small Muslim group who despise the British constitution and want to implement the SHARIA'AH LAW. They intend to hold demonstrations and March throughout all our major cities on Saturday 31st. October and NO ONE seems to care. Many people consider them a small minority group of LOONIES. However I remember another Loonie, his name was Adolph Hitler. No one took him seriously until he walked into Poland.

As far as the word 'gay' being hijacked and you resenting it, I would just say that the language changes constantly. Remember a few years ago when 'text' was a noun and now is a verb. It is strange at first but then regular use normalises it. Thus it always has been.
I am glad that you have no problems with your stepsons sexuality, but reading both your posts you are actually saying that he is not normal. I'm not saying that to have a pop at you, I am simply reacting to what you said. All I would say is that what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own lives should not be a problem to others, whether they view it as normal or abnormal.
It is very easy to make judgements of others when we really don't understand their feelings.

hokeykokeyalex - the Real question for the BBC is what defines far-Right. Are all racists far-Right? That is patently untrue. If you take course in politics they place parties on grids between Libertarian and Authoritarian on one axis and between economic Left and Right wing on the other. The BNP is defined in academia as an Authoritarian Left-wing party. As I've said before their manifesto is a virtual carbon copy of Labour's '83 manifesto. They originally wanted to call their party The Real Labour Party. All party activists can tell you that when the BNP are out canvassing they say "we are the Labour party your parents voted for."
The BBC is, consciously or not, smearing the Right-wing of politics. To the BBC the Nazis were far-Right despite the fact that they were National Socialists whose supporters were disillusioned Communists.

Nick Griffin was guilty of a crime under law - But it was not a crime of violence.
Also because he was convicted of inciting racial hatred does not mean that the what he said was untrue.
Additionally as you are no doubt aware - Because it is law at the moment does not necessarily make it right.
What also seems strange [but very pc] that very rarely do Muslims get prosecuted under race laws in spite of the never ending anti christian tirade from Islamic extremists.
