What did you think of The One Show? Guest: Alan Titchmarsh
Adrian and Christine were joined in the studio by Alan Titchmarsh.
Alan took us to the house where he grew up in West Yorkshire.
It's made of cheese! Damp cheese! Water's been found on the moon, so One Show astronomer Mark Thompson told us what it may mean for the future of mankind.
Lucy Siegle met One Show viewer Andrea, from North Yorkshire. Andrea thought that she'd bagged a bargain on a supermarket website, but it was too good to be true.
And 'Building Our House' week continues. Jonathan Foyle looked through, and then at, windows.
More about the 'Cottage sale omits nuclear view' story that got a mention here.

For all those who expressed the countless disparaging remarks a few weeks ago about the lovely Myleene, I'm sure you were in sympathy with Charlie Brooker's hilarious 'Push Myleene in the canal' game on Gameswipe last night on BBC4. If you missed it, catch it on iplayer.

Where did Christine get her dress? It's gorgeous!! I thought I had seen a page about where Christine gets her outfits, but I couldn't find it. Can we have one of these please? :o)
Thanks! Helen

Adrian's comment about Percy Thrower being an unlikely role model epitomises the ageist attitude of the BBC. According to the BBC the only role models kids can have are twenty something celebrities famous for being famous. There needs to be more middle-aged and older people on the BBC who actually have a record of achievement in their careers and the experience and maturity to pass on their knowledge.

Thought the piece you did on windows was smashing, especially with all the innuendo concerning window pains - *sighs and then rolls eyes with a cheesy grin and hands on hips* "you guys" *followed by a tut*

However in tonights show with Alan Titchmarsh, I may be wrong but to me it looked as though Adrians Flies were undone.

Ah, Christine a rose amongst thorns ;)
Was I alone in thinking that her dress looked a little like a uniform from Star Trek?
On a related space theme, how long before the 'first clown in space' lives up to that name and is ejected from spaceship by crewmates who have tired from being tickled? I just hope it isn't a clown craft they use to get into space, as all the doors will fall off...
Anyway, I reckon they should a blind-fold for more items. In particular the bit on the Friday shows where the guest walks on could be made vastly more entertaining if there was an element of challenge...

Re 4 Lab -Rat
With people like you, the BBC, or indeed any media outlet, just can't do right for doing wrong.
I am not a youngster and Percy Thrower is about as pointless as Fanny Craddock in terms of being a role model in today's world.
Thank goodness for the young, most of whom are just fine but never get the credit for it. However, it should please you that Alan Titchmarsh was on, as he is hardly a spring chicken.

Ilove the one show and watch every evening. It is a little embarrassing that Adrian for the second time is allowd to sit there with is flies open. For his sake and to save him more embarressment in 30mins is there no one to tell him to do is flies up,we viewers seem to be the only ones to spot the mistakes.Enjoyed the show.

Hello everyone at the One Show.
I always watch your show and really like it. However, the gentleman who was on the show alongside Alan Titchmarsh, i forget his name, was talking about global warming arriving a lot earlier than we can expect, like by 2060, or thereabouts. I personally think that predictions like that should be brought back a lot more to jolt the world into taking action now. By saying "in another 60 or so years" i think people say to themselves, "Well, it wont effect me because i'll be dead by then so what's the point in worrying about it?" Very selfish indeed, especially when we have children throughout the world to consider. Scientists should trick the world into thinking that it's going to happen in the next five years or so then maybe things will get done quicker. I know people who say yeah, bring on global warming because we'll all be a heck of a lot warmer here in the UK. The thing is that they don't get is that we're simply not climatised for that kind of seasonal change for a start. Our skin types aren't geared for it and those with chest problems would suffer the most. Skin cancer would soar to uncontrollable levels and those with Asthma would be dropping down in the streets in abundance. We simply don't care what happens to our world anymore. In fact, we NEVER have. We drain it of all its life, think the world owes us something and think about nothing but our own needs and comforts. We're a pampered society that knows nothing about how the world really, truly works. With Global warming, floods would wreak havoc on the northern hemisphere too. And all for what? A bit of sun. British citizens for one are too unhealthy for global warming and we will never be able to adapt. Life isn't all about suntans and looking good. Nature is a force we tamper with on a massive scale and sooner or later it will reclaim its status. We think we're invincible but really we're minute beings on a vast plain with nothing to do but moan, winge, demand and potentially destroy one of the most wonderfully awesome creations in our solar system. It's reality, not science fiction. Thank you for listening and thanks for a great show.

Global warming has become an organised religion.
Perhaps we ought to remember that the earth has, throughout its history, seen many climatic changes, some for ill and some for good as far as the human race is concerned. Perhaps someone could tell us what to do about sunspot activity which has effects on our climate that humankind will do nothing to counter.
Yes, we need to clean up our act as far as polluting our planet with rubbish, particularly the seas and stop decimating the forests, but our control of co2 emmissions will do little, when one considers the volume of the stuff that the earth itself produces..
We delude ourselves as to our significance, when we are but little against the might of nature.

I do like The One Show & watch as often as work commitments allow. Yesterday (30.09.090) was a watching day & I was pleased to see Alan Tichmarch was a guest. It was so nice to see him return to his old home. Unfortunately, at the end of the show, I think there was a bit of cheating going on when it came to Alan being blindfolded & correctly picking his rose. Did anyone else notice that the first two rose vases had clear water or was it Gin, Vodka or Bacardi? The third one had green water, perhaps a shot of Creme de Menthe? Will anyone own up to it?

Re 28/29: it looks likely (though to say exactly is impossible due to too many unknowns) that global warming would cause a big freeze in the British Isles rather than the weather becoming a degree or two warmer. We are dependent on the Gulf Stream (itself unpredictable) to stay warmer than we otherwise should. With global warming, the ice melts, dilutes the salty ocean and slows the GS, thereby causing us to experience severe cold weather such as is found in Canada, for example. While getting to this stage it is expected that we will suffer from increased rain & flooding.

Dear One show. I understand that the BBC is currently going through a hard time, with it's shrinking finances an all. But why, oh why did you cut Adrian Chils's anti perspirent surly a can of sure for men is not an overstreach. Watching him lift his arms in that pink shirt is very very off putting, so much so i may be tempted to watch horranation street. God damn i'm sweating now!!!

re #18 idracab,
I do not understand your point about "British Citizens" being unable to adapt to a warmer climate. I am a BC and have lived in various tropical climates around the world for about 9 years. I adapted very well, thank you. So did my children. This was especially true while sitting on a sun kissed beach in January and thinking about the weather in UK.
You say that scientists should trick the world into believing that global warming is imminent. What causes you to believe that they have not already done so?
I agree with astroplums at #19: Global Warming has indeed become an organised religion.

Re. Messages #19 and #23.
I'm sorry but it is nonsense to equate global warming with "organised religion". Belief in the latter is faith-based, whereas belief in the former is entirely evidence-based. Scientists believe that global warming is happening and that it is caused by human activity because the overwhelming weight of evidence supports these conclusions.
The level of cynicism directed towards the scientific community by 'johnholyer' in #23 is totally unjustified and very depressing. Scientists have not "trick[ed] the world into believing that global warming is imminent". To suggest that the vast majority of the world's scientists have colluded in order to lie about global warming is absurd. Not only would such a thing be totally impracticable but it would run counter to everything for which the scientific community stands.
In my experience virtually all scientists are motivated by a deep curiosity and a desire to understand the workings of the natural world - they seek truths, and would not deliberately spread untruths. There is certainly no financial incentive for scientists en masse to lie about global warming. If they were motivated by money they would not have entered scientific research in the first place, rather they would have become technologists in industry or computer specialists or, most likely, banking analysts.
With regard to the comments by 'astroplums' in #19, the fact (which no-one disputes) that "the earth has, throughout its history, seen many climatic changes" has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not current climatic changes are caused by human activity. These are independent events, and the reasons for most previous changes are well understood, such as changes in the Earth's orbit or inclination, global volcanic activity, changes in atmospheric composition, or whatever. None of these can account for the changes that we are seeing today. Changes in "sunspot activity", which is a proxy for solar radiation output, are cyclical and have only a small effect on our climate. What we are experiencing today is not cyclical - it appears to be a steady upward trend in global temperature which is modified by short term natural variations caused by, for example, the 'sunspot cycle' and changes in oceanic currents (including El Nino and La Nina).
The only proven mechanism that can account for this steady upward trend in global temperature is the enhanced greenhouse effect caused by human activity, most notably the burning of fossil fuels to release huge quantities of carbon dioxide. The basic science that underpins global warming is well understood and it is proven beyond doubt that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. Yes, the Earth does produce a huge volume of CO2, but the point you miss 'astroplums' is that it also absorbs a huge volume of CO2, and over our recent evolutionary history this production and absorption has been in balance. The additional CO2 that we are releasing by burning fossil fuels has destroyed this balance, with the result that atmospheric CO2 is steadily increasing.
It is simply not true to suggest that human activity cannot have a significant effect on climate - this was disproved when we released CFC gases and partially destroyed the ozone layer, but thankfully we listened to the scientists and banned these gases and the ozone layer is now recovering. The climate is a finely balanced chaotic system and to believe as 'astroplums' does that our activities are insignificant compared to the "the might of nature" is a belief based entirely on faith, not on evidence.

Return to johnholyer.
In response to you wondering what i meant by us British Citizens being unable to adapt to warmer climates is simply by the vast majority of ill health and skin types. As far as the latter's concerned, i researched statistics which showed there more than likely WILL be problems. I'm happy to hear you have resided in some tropical places etc and your children too.
