What did you think of The One Show? Guest: David Mitchell
It's another hour-long Friday special! Adrian and Christine were joined by David Mitchell.
Pope look-a-like, Ron Bannon-Wells was in the studio, too.
In Leicester, Anita Rani searched for the truth about street beggars. Does 'professional begging' really exist?
Adrian and Christine took to the skies in The Tellycopter! They visited Alderminster, Warwickshire, after viewer Eleanor Stretton, aged ten, requested their presence.
Mike Dilger told us all about albino animals, acompanied by a ferret, hedgehog and snake.
Stephen K Amos told us that he still holds a flame for Fame...
There are medieval burial pits under the streets of London. Angelica Bell went digging around.
Phil Tufnell looked at the endearing charm of ceramic flying ducks, one of the kitschiest symbols of the mid twentieth century.
Jay Rayner discovered what chicken breasts can be made of.
Karen Hardy examined why guys are attracted to dancing girls.
And Arlene Phillips, our Strictly Come Dancing expert, was in the studio - giving us the goss.
Have a great weekend, we'll see you on Monday.

I enjoy the One Show. BUT tomight's Pope thing disgusts me - it makes a mockery of the Christan faith and in my opinion is blaspehmous. It's cheao television and tawdry. I am not a Cahtolic, but tghis choice for inclusion on BBC1 disgusts me.

Hi I'm Judy, and my question is "Why do we have beggars, you never see an asylum seeker or a foreigner of any race begging, because they are taken care of when they come into this country, but what about our own people?, surely they should come first! Foreigners get the best housing they get a mobile, and a car! and of course plenty of benefits as they have somewhere to live and free medical!. The news states that the asylum seekers in France are trying to get here to England and they will, because gradually the french authorities will get fed up and let them slip in, STOP THE BENEFITS AND THE FREE MEDICAL FOR THEM ALL, THEY WON'T WANT TO COME HERE THEN, LETS LOOK AFTER OUR OWN PEOPLE FIRST!!!! I BELIEVE IN FAIRNESS AND EQUALITY, BUT IT IS NOT HERE FOR ENGLISH PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD SOME BAD LUCK OR TRAUMA IN THERE LIFE! FEEL FREE TO CALL ME , AS I HAVE VERY STRONG VIEWS WHERE OUR PEOPLE ARE CONCERNED.

As a Christian, though not a Roman Catholic, I object strongly to the denegration of His Holiness the Pope by the editorial team of The One Show on Monday 25th September show. Such blatant mockery of one of the world's most eminent spiritual leaders is offensive. May I suggest that the show reflects upon the impact of applying the same tasteless treatment to the Dalia Lama or the Ayatollah? Please pull this item and regain the respect of Christians.

Don’t give me there are no professional beggars around go into Manchester City centre. There are a couple of families that are known to turn up in cars and go to their own pitches sit and harass the public all day then go home in the evenings. Next time go around the country and not just one town then you will get a fair representation. Unfortunately this show can be at times quite biased putting a point the way you want and not how it is.

Amusing to read the above comments against 'making a mockery' of something as poisonous, ridiculous and anachronistic as religion. There can be nothing more deserving of mockery than religion.

You were wrong about the Pope being only the second to visit England. What about the previous Pope, John Paul 2nd, who came here is 1982? I happen to have signed, limited edition, prints of his visits, by Leonard Bodin.

Metal detectors are the BAIN of the life of an archaeologist. Its a fantastic thing that this hoard of gold has been found, but there must be lots of contextual archaeology underneath that gives clues to why the hoard was there.
Its really annoying when metal detectors come in and ruin a site and steal stuff for their own pocket.

just having "another" london topic is easy and cheap telly and allows the use of local bbc employees.
londoncentric bbc.
interesting the topic about begging,,,surprised the DAILY MAIL READING hang em and flog em rightwingers havent been blogging in their dozens telling us that beggers make £1000 a week and buy designer clothes with the money.
oh ,,,i do buy the daily mail myself.
as i blog the 3rd topic on the trot is based in london.
cant wait until 3 topics on the trot are based in a midland/northern/scottish town or city or even northern ireland????
will not happen.
if i have a northern chip on my shoulder it is because of the total lack of north/south balance in our nation...

Could the production team really not come up with anything better than the Pope 'lookalike' for tomnight's show? Would you treat the visit of another figure who is a leader to many millions in the world in such a disrespectful way? i have a real problem with big charities.
i look on them as big business.
i am an entertainer,,last year i did a charity tour for one of my local hospices and we raised a lot of money on a tour of venues.
the hospice does a great job and pays its fund raising team a large amount to raise money.
the head fundraiser gets a large salary and a funded car.
when i raise money i know a large portion goes to pay the wages of the fundraising team.
i now tend to do my "charity work" for small projects not big business.

I totally disagreed with the item on the programme this evening with regards to His Holiness Pope Benedict. He is the leader of millions of Catholics throughout the world. He is also a prominent figure within the world in bringing all faiths together and working towards peace. Why would you want to riduclule someone of such calibor. Apart from being Pope, he is also a very well educated and much loved man. Would you be so flippant with other Religious leaders of the world. I think not!! Give the Pope the respect he deserves. Not to add to the cheap television outpouring for which we are paying our license fee.
While I am very angry about your cheap shot at the Pope, I would also like to object to the cheap commments made by Hardeep Singh with regards to Easter. He asked what is Easter all about and making the comments of it just being for Easter Eggs. Please remind him that this is a Christian country and that Easter is the greatest Christian feast celebrating the miracle of the Ressurection, which is also celebrated with much love within all Christian Churches in the UK and the world. Please give our Christian faith the respect that I give to the faith of Hardeep Singh. I may not understand all that is within his faith, but I do respect it. Cathie

I am Television Licence payer. I had always believed that the BBC had an obligation to increase people's knowledge and understanding, particularly towards minorities. However, there is always one particular minority which is seen as far game for mockery and humiliation........Roman Catholics. There seems to be an unwritten law in this country that makes it legitimate to target Roman Catholics in a negative way. Rather than make any positive comments about the Pope's visit to this country, it has to be treated with the same ignorant contempt, that has been getting worse over the years, whenever the subject of Catholicism is raised. No wonder the general British Public view Catholics with suspicion, oblivious of the fact thet they too are also members of the British Public. I think your programme was a disgrace, your presenters should be ashamed of themselves and I should have my licence fee refunded. Anyone who thought this was funny has obviously got something wrong with them. I do not want to be subjected to such irreverential, prejudicial propaganda. You would not be allowed to treat clerics or spiritual leaders that represented Jews, Muslims, Hindus or Sikhs this way. If the Dallai LLama visited Britain you would not treat him so disrespectfully. Why should your last bastion of ignorance still be reserved for Catholics. I want my licence fee refunded! Oh, by the way, I am Roman Catholic.

POPE BENEDICT "LOOK-A-LIKE" Contest
It is valid to discuss The Pope's actions and/or statements-It is not "fair comment" to mock or ridicule him as an individual and leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
As a catholic found it objectionable as I am sure did many other people(Christian or not)
I feel sure that the BBC would NOT make a program ridiculing/mocking Mohammed .
There would be demonstrations, burning of bibles and a fatwa against the BBC presenters.
Christianity however is an easy target-"we turn the other cheek"
I would hope(but not expect)that the BBC would offer a simple apology, acknowledge that it has caused offence and cancel this stupid competition.
The One Show has given much pleasure and amusement in the past. This is offensive and not funny. You maynot agree with anothers belief but treat them with respect as you would wish to be treated.

But the continuing comments above are just unbelievable - I can't believe how easily-offended some people are, even if they are religious types. A pope lookalike - wow... very offensive... not! I dread to think how any of these people would react if they ever watched any satirical comedy shows on TV (i.e. those after 9pm, not lame ones before this time). Then they would be the ones out demonstrating and burning TV licences etc. And re 41: I didn't find the item particularly funny or clever either, but having stronger feelings than that? I really enjoy the show and encourage my grand children to watch it because it is often very educational.
We live north of Portsmouth in Hampshire, and have had albino squirrels in our garden for the past 20 years - not every year, but most years they are here.
When my children were small they wrote to Terry Nutkin? (can't remembr his name) when he was on the childrens' animal programme and he wrtote back saying that there was a large colony in the south of England. This year's white squirrel was in the back garden again a few days ago and we now have a camera at the ready, should he appear again!
thank you for excellent family entertainment

RE Comment 45: Of course you don't have any strong feelings of offence, you're 'anti-religion', why would you? It's a waste of time to even argue the toss with you because you're obviously unwilling to accept the fact that some people do have religious beliefs (that is allowed BTW), when you don't. You will never understand why those with faith would be offended by this because you seem to just be on here to promote religious intolerance. How very open-minded you are. I'll say a prayer for you.

Re 49/50: the word intolerance - most amusing. This is a good description of religion in just one word. Just look at the comments about Friday's show - how intolerant can one be... about a slight, throwaway remark. As one blogger pointed out, just look at the intolerance one religion has for another. Not to mentio what has been committed in its name - post 51 gives one such example. Opposing views to religion have thought rationally about it, coming to a sensible conclusion based on the evidence. Believers cannot accept opposing evidence and perpetuate the same old nonsense over and over again because they refuse to accept what has been shown to be fact. As one One Show blogger (Ketherine Birkett) pointed out here not so long ago, there's more evidence for the Flying Spaghetti Monster than for a god. With the pro-religious lobby, there is never anything with which to back up their arguments. An open mind would allow such people to apprectiate the chemically, biologically, physically & mathematically wonderful universe in which we live.

Religion for me is so outside anything I would label as reason I like so many other non-religious people find it if not impossible, extremely difficult to take such matters seriously.
In any normal exchange of ideas it's commonplace to ridicule an idea if that's your view and this is a generally accepted part of a logical debate, (sometimes not so logical); when religion becomes part of the exchange as a non-religious person I do not get particularly upset when challenged.
I find it difficult to understand how a perfectly legitimate argument with someone holding a faith of one kind or another can get so upset when challenged.
My references to as I see it a very bad regressive side of a particular faith; I have not invented the condom aids or child abuse issues they are real and I do not see why they should upset you or any other fair minded persons.
Complain about this comment
I can assure you that amongst civilised debaters no one would employ your ridicule theory as acceptable [eg village idiot reference]. I did not suggest you "INVENTED" the issues of condom aids or child abuse, I merely fail to see their relevance in the discussion of a papal look alike contest. I have no problem with your beliefs or lack of such,I reiterate for the final time it is your attitude which is offensive to many.I ahve to say your post 58 is difficult to follow, perhaps you got a little too agitated?

Post 60, appichappi, I must confess to laughing heartily at Dave Allen even while uncomfortable with the fact that others may have been unhappy with his irreverance. That was some time ago now, and we have, so rumour would have it, moved on, we no longer have racist comedians[?] and mother in law jokes. Whether this is progress or not is debatable. What is unpleasant is that when people are upset and hurt by what they see as a slight against deep held beliefs, the pseudo intellectuals take the opportunity to belittle their faith and emotions.Don't mean to rant at you dear, but I do detest the smart-ass coterie!I agree it was childish and embarrassing, but as you have read a lot of people were deeply offended, and I do regret that!
