What did you think of The One Show? Guests: Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer

The One Show Team | 09:51 UK time, Wednesday, 26 August 2009

john_bob_myleene_vic.jpgMyleene and John were joined in the studio by comedians Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer.

Angelica Bell went to find out if working class communities are being misrepresented by reality TV.

Who's your working class TV hero? Del Boy, Steptoe... or? Continue the conversation, below.

Following an outbreak of E. coli in Wrexham North Wales earlier this month, Anita Rani delved into just how clean our restaurants are and what measures are in place to protect the public from food poisoning. For more advice on food safety, go to our more information page.

Mike Dilger introduced us to the Glis Glis - a breed of edible mouse - that can only be found in the Chilterns.

And finally our very own street barber Michael Douglas took to London's Cabman's Shelters to give cabbies a crop and stop for a chat.

Can you really categorize people in this way, typical BBC middle class snobbery if you ask me, see I'm at it as well, putting people in boxes but then again that's what the BBC mindset is and if you dare go outside one of their 'perfect human being containers' as illustrated by the example of the likes of Maggie Thatchers daughter, you get the whole BBC media Mafia coming down on you like a ton of bricks, restricting both freedom of thought and speech. What did I hear a guy on radio 4 say last night 'if you stay in a job too long you become arrogant and don't listen to people' just about sums up the BBC, about time they had a change and closed the whole monolithic monopoly down.

There is clearly some disagreement about what makes someone working class. 'Contented' and 'dynamicSandra' both suggested the Marxist definition (someone who sells their time or their labour) but only economists are that strict.
The boundary between what used to be called 'respectable working-class' and the lower middle class is extremely hazy, but that is where the Steptoes lived; Tom (the Good Life) is clearly middle-middle; working-class people, in the main, do not 'do' self-sufficiency nowadays (except perhaps by keeping an allotment) but certainly not in the manner in which Tom and Barbara did.
On TV, I think one of the best portrayals of working-class qualities, both good and bad, was in Paul Shane's character Ted Bovis, the comic in 'Hi-de-Hi'. The character, as written by David Croft and Jimmy Perry, was thoroughly working-class himself and, to his credit, understood his working-class audience (this was brilliantly illustrated during his frequent exchanges with the character played by Simon Cadell). The Ruth Madoc character (Gladys Pugh) is quintessential provincial lower middle-class, by the way.

'The Office' would be the best comedy series for the working class featuring a romance that kept you on your seat. Two pints of lager and a packet of crisps is one of the funnier new series.

I do think that we need more comedy series for working class cos most series seem to feature almost a Terry and June like quality eg 'The Family' which I have never found that funny. Much prefered Robert Lindsay as Wolfie Smith...........still those were the good old days.
Although one series which I thought was brillantly written and acted and portrayed the working class was 'Open all hours'

Lets get back to those sort of comedies featuring working class .... as working!

Aah! Thank you, swinkle, for mentioning Terry and Bob in The Likely Lads. Yes, in the first series they were true working-class characters. However, it was in the sequel ("Whatever happened to...") that the series achieved its true brilliance, because now you had class differences, the driving force behind most of our greatest sitcoms. For Terry, the clock had stopped when he joined the army, and he hoped to just pick up his life where he left off, when he got discharged five years later. However Bob had moved on, and had become lower middle-class both by his employment and his aspirations, spurred on by Thelma his fiancée, although a kernel of his working-class origins still remained. The conflicts both between them and within Bob's character made for a brilliant, though somewhat dark sitcom.

I am not a fan of John Sargeant, but he DEFINITELY went up in my estimation when he suggested that Reeves & Mort's 'Shooting Stars' was "childish".

Talk about a bit of refreshing accuracy in the show, instead of the sycophantic grovelling tripe we get from Mr Chiles.

'Shooting Stars' IS tripe, as I actually forced myself to watch it. As a licence fee payer, I like to think I can recognise publically-funded tripe when I see it, so John Seargeants reference to their show as being 'Childish' was really an understatement.

All I can say is that Mr Reeves & Mr Mortimer are not to my taste, and that perhaps the CBBC-channel would be a more appropriate slot for their offerings.
