What did you think of the show? Guest: Sarah Ferguson.

The One Show Team | 15:51 UK time, Friday, 31 July 2009

Tonight Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, joined Adrian and Christine in The One Show studio.

Consumer expert, Dom Littlewood looked at a supermarket's alcohol sales policy.

One Show astronomer Mark Thompson went stargazing in Norfolk with One Show viewers.

Marty Jopson met mudlarks, the people who get down and dirty searching for objects in river mud.

And Charlie Clements, Eastenders' Bradley Branning, looked at the trials and tribulations of being ginger.

Have a great weekend, we'll see you on Monday.

What did you think of the show?

Comment re: Dom's report. Dear Dom, we love you but you could have pointed out that Tesco's enforce their ruling that the unfortunate cashier who sells any alcohol to an underage drinker has to pay thousands of pounds out of their own pocket to cover fines and costs. Check it out, its scary for the poor soles stuck in the checkout booth!

I have worked in a shop as a cashier and if I had sold alcohol to a minor or someone buying it for a minor I wouldn't have just been technically breaking the law as Dom put it. I would have been arrested by the police in the store in front of other staff and customers, read my rights and taken to the police station. I would have been fined £15,000 and potentially locked in jail. The store would have also been fined £15,000. I would have certainly lost my job after having to pay out all that money I didn't have.
It's drummed into people working in shops that they do not take any risks when it comes to selling alcohol, especially as the police and Trading Standards do so many checks. If people are refused a sale and feel a little embarrased so be it. They need to look at the situation from the point of view of the people serving and trying desperatelly not to fall foul of the law rather than just considering their own convenience and assuming everyone else is wrong. Making a scene in a store is only going to make matters worse for them as no one is going to sell alcohol to people who are behaving aggressively either.

I have never contributed to a blog before but felt i had to after watching Dom's report on supermarket alcohol policy. My 20 year old daughter works for Tesco part time to fund herself through university. When she turned 18 she used to come home in a very stressed state due to the dire warnings issued by Tesco management if she failed to carry out their policy to the letter. I don't know if this is done all over the country but here in Scotland the police set up tests i.e. sending underage youngsters into supermarkets to test how well the policy is adhered to by having them try to buy alcohol. The people on the checkouts don't earn that much and have a lot of responsibility as far as this is concerned. I feel that this report was put over in a rather derogatory manner and these hardworking people don't deserve this. Perhaps the show should have had a senior Tesco manager on to ask them about this, or perhaps a senior police officer instead of adopting a slightly supercillious towards the people who are just trying to do their best.

Sarah Ferguson came across as a really lovely woman - Prince Andrew is lucky to have her!

My sister has ginger hair and fortunately has never been subject to any (serious) abuse because of it - in fact, most people who meet her actually comment on how beautiful it is! Be proud of who you are, that's what I say.

On another note, it was a really moving tribute to Sir Bobby Robson (R.I.P.).

Excellent show, keep up the good work.

Re 13: sister's hair. I'm sure it is very beautiful... never understood the whole ridicule-a-redhead thing... I find a lot of redhead (different shades fronm light ones to dark auburn) females have a certain look about them which is very bautiful & alluring indeed.

Good to see the astronomy slot - hope it progresses along nicely, gently incorporating (dare I say) a slightly more mathematical/scientific slant to some items (I think such an educatuional slot is worthwhile since it was shown tonight that some do not even know how long it takes the earth to orbit the sun).

Benjy 85 is absolutely right. I feel you completley missed the point and only showed the point of view of the customer. If the public realised that the cashier themselves now have to pay the fine you can understand why such mistakes can happen. an £80.00 fine, the loss of your job, possibly the loss of all your colleagues jobs as well , and the store closing down is why such errors can be made. The law is absolutely tight. You sell alcohol to anybody under 18 and the consequences are severe, . This was not the cashiers fault although you portrayed it as such.

RE: Mark Thompson's Star Gazing Episode in Norfok aired last night on "The One Show"

Firstly, I would like to congratulate Mark Thompson, Luke and Dave for filming this fascinating and illuminating film about the night sky. I had the pleasure and the honour to be a part of this Star Gazing filmimg event right here in Norfolk and I would just like to say a BIG Thank you to the guys and crew for creating, filming and sharing this enlightening experience with me. Mark taught me a lot about the stars and reawakened a renewed interest in Astrology and now I am hungry to learn more. I was the Star Gazer who said "I realised the universe was infinite!" - Pearls of wisdom! LOL! I had loads of fun being a part of this show and would love to do more. Re 21 and line 10 of 20.

It's obvious Sky.... I think Donna is trying to say she wants to become a star one day. That's a tenuous link to astrology I guess from having looked at that website lol

    Loved the show as ever.

I thought the best bit was when DofY was genuinely horrified of the treatment of poor old Props Dave. Sounds like he was radiating heat in that outfit. And Adrian's patting of his bottom behing the sofa was a bit disturbing whilst I was tring to eat my dinner I must say.....

    As for the Tesco article.......

In such a brief slot there would never be enough time to cover all angles of the storyline but I'm guessing from the way it was put across this was not just a case of a disgruntled customer and an over zealous shop assistant. Sounds like the poor woman was convicted as guilty before being proven innocent and the treatment by all concerned was way over the top hence her wanting to go public.

Personally... I would have just popped to the next Sainsburys and boycotted TESCO for a while at least (Other Supermarkets are available... says she trying to sound like Adrian :-)

As much as I too feel Muhamed Ali would be a wonderful opportunity for the One Show.... knowing how hard it is for a person to think quickly and express themself with a neurological disorder (my Hubby has Huntington's Disease which is like Parkinson's; Altzheimer's; Motor Neurone and a whole host of diseases rolled into one) I would hate to think the show's fast pace of topics and being crammed into half an hour would be unfair on M Ali. He is worthy of an hour on his own with Adrain at least. I also think Adrian's and Christine's compassionate nature would make it hard for them to easily switch between his needing their full attention and trying to be lighthearted for the jokey features on such an occassion.

Just my thoughts..... Hard for me to not think of the subject matter as being an entertainments thing guys so I do apologise if that comes across as being a party pooper. :-)
