What did you think of The One Show? Guest Tim Healy

The One Show Team | 15:15 UK time, Thursday, 30 July 2009

Adrian and Christine were joined in the studio by actor Tim Healy.

Dan Snow told us the story of the medieval longbow the machine gun of its time.

Mitch Benn asked whether we are living in dangerous times or if our fears, hyped by the media, are getting the better of us. Are we too scared of taking risks nowadays? Share your stories.

Lucy Siegle met unsatisifed British Gas customer Jamie Freeman.

Rav Wilding reported on the rise in the number of drivers falling asleep at the wheel.

And finally, The One Show has been keeping a close eye on West Auckland FC (they were the winners of the 1909 'world cup'), since they appeared on the show in January 2009. The team have since received a £10,000 grant from the FA and have organised a centenary rematch against Juventus which is taking place in Turin on Saturday 1st August at 5.30pm local time. We wish them the best of luck!

I feel terrible for that poor girl whose boyfriend was killed by a loory driver suffering from OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnoea). I just wish that you had interviewed someone other than his Uncle. His claim that he is "campaigning to make people aware" of sleep apnoea is probably untrue, because judging by his hastily put together comments, his knowledge of the condition is limited to part of its name and sysmptoms only. It is bad enough for that poor family to lose someone so young, so to provide such a weak ending to the story meant that it was completly wasted! Please, consider the message and at least carry through what you start! This is a serious issue and should not be degraded by such weak interviews with unqualified and uninformed individuals, whatever his motivation.

It is fine for the psychologist to tell us to have a coffee and a kip, but the question is where. In France they have rest Aire every 10kms but we have only 2 places on the whole of the M25. Without more places to stop the problem of dozing drivers will never end.

NONSENSE!!! I buy it because I don't want to consume pesticides and I want my food to contain as many vitamins etc as possible. Everyone else I know who eats organically does so for the same reason and also because of superior taste. The environmental impact is nothing compared to the impact on my pocket!!

As i know you love to get your facts correct on the one show, could you please inform the ex Arsenal and match of the day presenter Bob Wilson that how many times he came out with the comment Arsenal were the first English side to win Juventus on Italian soil, is and always was false. It was of course the mighty West Auckland FC.

    Thanks

I'm not saying your wrong, we English have nicked a lot of stuff in the past that doesn't belong to us, look no further than that huge diamond in the Queens crown, the star of India! so where did you get your info then?

The latetst Web Show (No. 11) is good, containing admissions of mistakes (gasp! - and there was even a correction of the Henry VIII date - see above - live on air) as well as noting comments about the unforgettable Shane Richie show a week ago. Well done folks.

Re 2 & 7: although longbows can be traced back circa 12000 years to Scandinavia, their first recorded use on these shores was in 633 by the Welsh while fighting the Mercians. Following the Norman Conquest, the Anglo-Normans (in their invasions of Wales) suffered heavy losses to the Welsh and their longbows; after these wars the English incorporated the Welshmen into their ranks, and their longbows were to play a decisive role, particularly in the famous wars of the 14th Century.

Re 10: you're welcome, geordieangel. There are many things that can be traced back so far (and perhaps have an ambiguous history) that you can go back to whatever time is convenient and then lay claim to them. Maybe someone will show that some dinosaurs (of a particular nationality) had a longbow variant!

If you check your history i think you will find that it was both English and Welsh long bowman!! I am very disappointed that Mr Snow contiually called them English when the most renound were the Welsh.
Before you say anything I am English not Welsh!
It is another example of us claiming everything as our own and giving credit to nobody else, no wonder the celts (and others) take a dislike to us!!
Below is a brief history lesson for you all:-
The longbow was also used against the English by their Welsh neighbours. The Welsh used the longbow mostly in a different manner than the English. In many early period English campaigns, the Welsh used the longbow in ambushes, often at point blank range that allowed their missiles to penetrate the English Knights' armour and generally do a lot of damage. One famous Welsh longbow victory was on 22 June 1402 when Owain Glyndwr fought a battle against the English at Bryn Glas. He strategically placed his longbowmen on top of a high hill, so that his longbowmen had a better range than the English longbowmen, who were overwhelmed down on the low ground. The result was a conclusive victory for the Welsh.

At Bangor uni I competed in many archery competitions with my long bow and I am indeed welsh, I agree with what has been concluded here and I hope that the one show does explain their mistake, the French insult (two fingers in the air) was a direct insult to the welsh archers who famously accompanied the English armies. Rumor has it that if a French men put his arm above the battlements to insult an archer they would often receive up to 9 arrows imbedded in his arm!

I'll confess, Rav Wilding might as well have been telling me off personally duirng his report on the show.
Twice in a 24 hour period last month I nearly fell asleep at the wheel, one of which was on a motorway. I felt bad about that fact then, and it made my stomach churn with guilt about it last night.

Nobody got hurt I quickly add but I consider myself fully warned, knuckles wrapped and will do everything I can to make sure it never happens again.

Please, Christine, take something to calm down! You'll choke yourself eventually. You're lovely and we don't want you to hurt yourself, we just want you to enjoy yourself which is obviously what you're doing. I'm worried about you. The show wouldn't be the same without your nice presentation and it's a nice start to the evening, we all enjoy it and you and Adrian are a great team. Just calm down and stop getting so hysterical.
    Lots of love

Well I must be honest but certainly do not want to criticise the One Show, especially that presenter whose personality, beauty and charisma, with a laugher which lights up the darkest of time. "Tell me truly has tho seen such sweeter, gentler face; what stars do spangle heaven with such beauty as those two eyes become that heavenly face" Watching your programme because of that presenter makes you programme unmissible- and Christine Blakely is OK as well.

However I have problem about content of the feature about George Orwell on the One Show 16/06, and know it's late but I don't want write to Stephanie Harris, (Orwell did say the BBC was the model for the "Ministry of Truth" in 1984.)

Anyway due to advanced Orwellian surveillance techniques I overheard this conversation:

Ex- 'busy'(scouse for police officer)now working for One Show and one of his ex-collegues.

'Hello; how are you gettin' on at the Beeb, lucky you with that delectable 'brummie' Adrian Childes.

Hey watch it; did you like my piece about Orwell and surveillance ?

Yeah, I wanted to have a word with you about that.

Why, I didn't try to fit him up, those days are over, before my time!

Oh I know, the procedures are much tighter. No, it's accuracy about your story about Orwell ! Your evidence was incorrect!

What's evidence got to do with anything- I said what I was told to say-obeying orders!

Hang on,put your riot shield down; I'm just saying that your statement that Orwell in that house, as portrayed in visual evidence, claimed that the great man lived their when he wrote the book is WRONG !I've got your statement on DVD-bang to rights.

What! Strike me down from behind with a telescopic baton, I'll be tazzered. I'll be in trougble

No,no, don't worry about that, the BBC won't subject you to 'pain compliance techniques' or Kettle you for 5 hours without any toilets,
food or water. No just admit you got iT wrong-your soft intelligence was faulty !

Well where did he write the book '

Well that's up to you to find out, your the detective !
I'll give you a clue- it was on an island.
Let the viewers know, won't you; I'll be watching !

    Thanks, see you.
