What did you think of The One Show? Guest: Denis Lawson

The One Show Team | 11:03 UK time, Wednesday, 29 July 2009

Adrian and Christine were joined by actor Denis Lawson.

Matt Allwright was in Bolton to investigate the rise in crimes and trespassing on railway lines. He visited a youth initiative called 'No Messin!' that aims to keep kids off the tracks.

Phil Tufnell kicked off our new series of art films commemorating the outbreak of WW2. Tonight he looked at the wartime propaganda cartoons that informed, educated and influenced.

Des Coleman met Bonnie and Clyde, the two border collies with a special bond, that were found roaming on a country road in Norfolk. Find out more about Bonnie and Clyde here.

And Stephen K Amos looked at the history and popularity of Breville's toasted sandwich maker.

What did you think of the show?

I live near the fictional "Ferness" in the north of Scotland. Tell Dennis Lawson I still think he was brilliant in "Local Hero" and even though it was years ago my American cousins watched it with me about 2 weeks ago and loved it! Hats off to you Dennis! (or should I say Gordon?) Regards from "Big Stew", Scottish Highlands.

    Hi

Regarding to your item about children holidays.

Your comment that there is nothing for them to do is surly not correct as any where there are unlimited things to do from all types of sports clubs and other activities just takes some effort!

What a disgrace is Denis Lawson. Does the BBC pay him to play important people who he cannot remember the name of? ROBERT Fleming indeed!

Your reporter re the accidents on the railways where people are killed on the track said that the electrified line was 25,000 volts.
Is this a fact, because I seem to remember it being 700 volts, still more than enough to kill, but unlikely to jump the many yards gap that your reporter indicated.
Sorry to nitpick, I am an avid fan of your show!

Surely dribbling hot cheese down your face or shredding the roof of your mouth is more of a problem with the eater rather than a problem with the toastie?

Do not feed toasties to rabbits. I once fed my rabbit a lettuce toastie followed by a carrot toastie and it proved fatal. According to the vet, it was due to 'mixin me toasties'.

The item on railway trespass was much needed. But you repeated the old chestnut of the 10 foot arc. Think about it, anyone on the platform would be in danger. Using exaggerated statements blows your credibility with the people you want to reach. Much better re-run Top Gears Espace on the crossing film, the destruction is awesome.

    Re: youngsters playing on the railtracks: I have the following observations to make;
Risk taking and impulsive behaviour are part of adolescent, male behaviour. I doubt that many young girls play "chicken" on the railways! It is impossible to protect us from our own stupidity. Sometimes we get away with it and sometimes, tragically we don't.
I've dealt with the fall-out from a young man being killed by a train on rail tracks and know how dreadful it is for all who know the victim. However, the bottom line is, the risks are known and choices are made. No amount of education will change behaviour when the youngsters are in a group, egging each other on and showing off. The drivers should be totally protected - aren't the windscreens re-inforced? Consequences for acts of vandallism, particularly those resulting in injury, should be dire and harsh.

I love The One Show, every one, the guests are great even him who couldn't remember the name of that guy who invented pennicilin.
If I have one grumble it's the sloppy English wot is spoke on the show.
Seriously, I find it most irritating when people who are supposedly educated always begin an answer to a question with 'WELL'.
May I suggest that members of The One Show team put a coin in a tin every time they use that word in that context.

Post 12, it drives me mad too, but not as much as the patronising "that's a good question"! If the members of the One Show team put a coin in a tin every time they made an ill considered comment it would offset their salaries, lol.

The story of the guide dog to a dog could bring a tear to a glass eye. Lovely stuff.

What is it with Alexander Fleming and Scottish One Show guests?? Lorraine Kelly was dis-beliveing of the fact that Fleming was a Scot, whilst Denis Lawson can'r=t even remember his name despite playing him. According to wikipedia one of the many 'Robert' Flemings is a writer of erotic and horror fiction. Perhaps Denis is a fan and this was the source of his confusion ;)

As for the toasties, I think one of the problems with the sweet versions was the adding of unnecessary textures. Putting sponge or crumble inside compressed bread just ain't going to work. I reckon an apple and cinamon toastie would be lovely, though (they would burn your mouth to an even greater extent than the traditional cheese ones, however)
