The One Show Team | 15:40 UK time, Friday, 17 July 2009

Omid Djalili, Adrian and Christine

In a very special One Show 'Moon Show', commander Bleakley and space cadet Chiles were joined by comedian Omid Djalili to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the moon landings.

Ben, The One Show 'astronaut'
Lucy Siegle told us about Dr Tom Bacon, an unsung British space hero whose achievements were, um, eclipsed.

Marty Jopson met Richard Osborne, one of Britain's leading amateur rocket builders.

Matt Allwright investigated the conspiracy theories surrounding the moon landings.

And finally, Robert Llewelyn and his team in Cambridgeshire launched The One Show Rocket.

Plus: Protect the Earth from alien invasion!

    " Moon Show Special"

Following a nice pre-title sequence introducing the show and inviting viewers to The One Show Moon Show, we were introduced to a new moon set which looked cheap but in a nice way, not like some other cruder sets. It was nice to see the coffe table had been given a welcome vacation.

Omid Djalili told us a story about a fake letter at school which all the pupils got, and Christine looked as beautiful as ever in her spacey little number.

So, then into the first V.T item, which celebrated the British input into the American Apollo 11 Space Mission. Rule Britania! The item was well constructed but a bit hefty on the facts. It was very well illustrated with back up points to boot, and some interesting interviews, The best being with Francis Bacon's son, Edward. He is getting on a bit himself and looked a bit like the guy out of Pixar's first ever animation.

So back to the studio, with more purple in it than Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, shirts included.

There was then a rather boring discussion about moon rocks, but I guess if you were interested in the subject you will have liked it.

Omid then explained that his name means Hope because of a rocket named after him and this added a bit of comedy to anotherwise dull but factual interview.

And after all that education the BBC plug nothing better than BBC Games... nice one.

So onto the 2nd V.T item... again drumming home the fact that Britain contributes a lot to the space travel progress around the world.
There was then an amazing experiment conducted in someone's garden that looks like it should have been on Blue Peter or some other kind of show. It did prove a serious point however, small things lead to bigger and better things. And nothing great was ever achived without failing first.

The rest of the report was like an old Science video in school, loads of jargon and facts thrown at us on a Friday evening, uncalled for and un needed.

Back to the purple paradise of The One Show Studio for a look at thier own rocket launch. Finally something entertaining. A big One Show rocket is shown and this gets our interest. A launch control area is shown and it is a big 7 or 8 man job, and health and safety has been considered. The old thing of stay tuned is used.

Omid is replacing Owen Atkinson in Oliver and a great and fabulous interview is conducted with him in the studio. " Is this to much? I never know!"

Race is then touched about an iranian playing a jew on stage, but it is all pretty calm and discussed in a mature and great manner by the team and Omid.

Then to even thing's out Matt tells us the moon landing may have been faked. This is a great report with amazing content and great in depth explinations of how it may have been faked. With a remake of the video.

What a fabulous and entertaining point of view and thanks for being two sided for a change One Show!

The rocket is then shot and the show closes

WHAT A BORING FACT BASED SHOW!

Noticably the show it's self had a few dodgy camera shots and bad timings but was over all well produced.

A great show! I wish I had been there as I would have loved to discuss the "Moon hoax" theories. I followed the space programme from the early 60's and can genuinely say that I know a good deal about the subject. In fact the people who claim we didn't go to the Moon (as opposed to the thousands who have simply seen what they say about it) really do not know what they are talking about. Aside from using very selective video clips, what they don't realise is that some of those same clips actually show they *were* on the Moon!
They also appear to be very ignorant about radiation, the Apollo programme itself, photography (including basic things like perspective) and science in general. What makes this daft is that they could have found the real answers if only they did the minimal research. The lander did NOT weight 17 tons on the Moon. There is NO reason for a crater to have been formed by the landing engine. The spacesuits were NOT inflated to a greater pressure than a football.
I'm pleased to say that I can claim to be responsible for a certain drinks company removing their advert suggesting the Moonwalk was filmed in a studio.
Anyone who wants to hear these claims laid to rest should go to "The Great Moon Hoax" at the Royal Observatory at Greenwich on Tuesday evening. See http://www.nmm.ac.uk/visit/events/great-moon-hoax/*/changeNav/false/from/2856
We should promote science, not attack it!

It's funny how the people with the most to gain from disproving the moon landings (apart from authors flogging their dubious wares, of course) never managed to.
Indeed, the Soviets never even attempted to seriously deny NASA's achievement. Instead they perpetrated their own hoax, by claiming that they were never in a race to the moon, that they considered the landings were of little benefit and that they wouldn't risk Soviet lives on such a fool-hardy expedition. Which was all nonsense that was only fully exposed when the Soviet Union collapsed.

Of course there are those who will say that the resultant photos are fakes, but you can't please everyone ...

Why has NASA never been back? Because at the time it was no longer politically desirable. Now we are planning our return, based on an on-going programme that will keep NASA spending at about its current level.

People think the costs were absolutely massive, yet NASA spending is only about 1% of government funding. The USA spends far, far more on health, education & welfare, and as for defence spending, their operations in Iraq were costing them $1 billion per day, which meant we could have paid for a manned Mars mission in under 2 months! As for the UK, the NHS budget is about £7.2 billion, when we spend less than £200 million on space. A couple of weeks ago, it was announced that the two new aircraft carriers ordered 2 years ago at a cost of £3.2 billion will now cost £5 billion. So please don't say that space exploration is a waste of money that we can't afford.
