What did you think of The One Show? Guests Sue Perkins and Giles Coren

Food fanatics Sue Perkins and Giles Coren joined Adrian and Christine in the studio tonight.
It's been reported that sprouts have been banned from HMS Bulwark for being the "devil's vegetable". Which veg do you hate? Tell us, and your answers could feature on tonight's show.
Matt Allwright asked about racial divisions in Luton.
Ellie Harrison completed her set of films about animal policing at Heathrow airport. More info about pet passports and bringing food into the UK here. And take a look at The One Show pet passports gallery!
Paddy O'Connell looked at the truth behind swine flu.
And it was Christmas in June for Michael Mosley. He told us it's in the stars.
Adrian and Christine's read the comments and stories you send into The One Show website. Hear their comments about your comments here! Watch The One Show Web Show.
What did you think of tonight's programme?

Hi, I'm Esther Hyman and you interviewed me last year about the after effects of the London bombings as my sister was killed that day.
Your piece on community tensions has prompted me to write. About six weeks after 7/7 I went to an open day at a mosque local to me in Oxford to extend the hand of friendship and to express that I do not blame the wider Muslim community for the actions of the radical few. I have been in touch with Oxford Islam and Muslim Awareness Project ever since.
Even better my Muslim next door neighbours and I have become good friends, often exchanging food over the fence and chatting with their children.
I would love people to know about this, because if I can recognise that it's the radicalised few who ruin things for the many, then I hope that other people can see past the simplistic divides all too often promoted in the media.
Thank you
Esther

the one show has stopped pretending and is saving money by staying local.
are you really all so happy with the show that this does not annoy you ?

You don't need to do any calculations to know that the Christians co-opted the pagan winter festivals to help ameliorate the conversion of the local populace to Christianity. As for when Jesus was born it all rests on very dodgy Biblical scripture.

Why, when talking about racism in Ireland, your guest thought it fully acceptable, when talking about european racists, to say "Ich bin ein racist" (in the German language), with a massive implication that German's are racists by definition. I found this totally abhorrent and should be dealt with by way of a sincere apology from Giles Coren, furthermore he should explain why he thought this was acceptable and why he chose the German language to express racism!!!!!!!!!
Furthermore how can the BBC condone this beaviour or allow people like this to be on the chanel. This is disgusting!

I will never watch your show again! In one breath Christine advises that she doesn't want the whole of Belfast to be tarred with the same racist brush as those who have recently showed violence towards Romanians. Then Giles adds that if racists simply said "Ich bin ein Racist" then we would know where we stand!! He is being racist towards Germans with this ignorant comment. When will he realise that Germans did not invent racism and if you look into the British history (remember slavery and killing most of the Aboriginals in Australia), he is an absolute ignorant fool.
I will never watch your show again!

On the subject of the Luton protests, i agree that what the protesters did was wrong but it was a minority of the muslim community. My uncle who at 67 travelled 100miles to protest on his own in Luton town centre against the muslim extreamists felt very strongly that the minority who felt they could insult our troops should move on if they didn't like it and i agree, i am not racist but in this case these people almost encourag racism with their ridiculous behaviour.
Sadly my uncle passed away 2 weeks ago without much acknowledgement of what he did to support our troops and his beliefs and i just wanted to support him by sending this message. He was totally right in his protest against the people who move to this country just to cause trouble.

I am absolutely horrified that the swine flu story didn't once cover where it originated from. While this isn't the huge risk everyone thought it was, it has spread amazingly fast and the next risk is around the corner - well in Argentina anyway (Cabanas Argentinas del Sol).
Factory farming pigs started this pandemic (some pig farms develop their own vaccines). European pig farming practices are appalling - so next time it may be down the road instead of around the world.
I appreciate that this is a light magazine programme, but please - there are more serious aspects to the story than worrying about whether you're going to die from a disease you could have prevented through ethical buying.

You have had two people on your show that have commented on racist practices by others, do you not think that after 2000 years of battling to keep these islands as they wanted then. As I say two thousand years to get where we were by the 1980s and 29 years to destroy it under successive governments allowing races like Romanians, Ethiopians and all the Balkan states to dump there fodder onto us.
The statements made by the two in my eyes was positive racism, supported by the current and probably by the next one Government.
I am not a member of the BNP or ever have been.
I have liked your programme up until now please give the opposition a chance to speak.

I was surprised to hear Giles Coren getting all holier than thou about racism when you consider his views of the Poles, or are Jews allowed to be racist on the BBC, you really should vet your guests in relation to the subject of the day

Disgusted at Mr Coren's "Ich bin ein Racist" comment -- however flippant it was.
Yes, extreme right-wing views and political parties exist in German speaking countries. But they're also present in Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Greece, Hungary, Slovakia and Finland -- and the UK of course.
So why did Mr Coren feel the need to use German?
Such casual stereotyping is tired, ignorant and not at all helpful given the topic. It suggests that racism is a foreign topic, one that some kind of real Britain doesn't get involved in. In reality racism is something the whole of Europe has issues with. We're all in it together and comments like Mr Coren's do nothing but help maintain and widen division.
Mr Coren should apologise.

I'm posting another comment because my previous one was censored by the moderators, so here it is in a modified form:
You wouldn't invite Nick Griffin on the One Show (given one of the subjects of tonight's show) so why invite Giles Coren? If any reader of this comment wishes to know the reason for this, just read Giles Coren's article in The Times newspaper on July 6th 2008. Every word I said in my previous posting was true, so why was it removed. Has Giles Coren got friends in high places?

Love the way you parachuted a BBC luvvie into Luton, he decided that whatever problems Luton has must be the fault of the racists, or the tabloids, then panned back to the studio settee, where Giles from Hampstead delivered his verdict that anyone who isn't on message on diversity issues is a racist.
If you're going to have a show about disenfranchised people, it might be good if you actually ask their opinion.
As they say, I'm no racist recruiter, but I think you're doing a splendid job of driving people toward the BNP.

The year of Jesus' birth has some argument about it I think... I remember being told about it as a child at church, 25 years ago or so, so I looked it up again just now.... Matthew's gospel puts him as being born under Herod's rule, lots of historians (and I don't claim to be one, I'm actually a Geography teacher) agree Herod died in 4 BC.
Dionysius Exiguus said we should use Jesus' birth as the date for the calendar in the 6th century apparently but people say he got the date of Herod's death wrong by a few years. Halley's comet is recorded in the sky for 70 days in 6BC, which would seem to make more sense. But the other thing is we changed from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian calendar and all sorts of numbers of days were added.
I don't think we'll ever know when he was born but that's what makes it interesting, it's a mystery...

I'm disgusted that Giles Coren was on your One Show this evening. I echo one or two of the comments made here for two reasons. One was his German slurr and the second is the fact that Giles Coren and the Times newspaper are being taken to the european court of human rights for racist comments he made in the Times about the Polish nation. I'm shocked he's working for the BBC and that I'm paying my licence fee to bankroll someone who's attacked another race in public. how ironic they should ask him about the Romanians after what he saod about the Poles and what he's just implied about the Germans. He's jewish, would the BBC allow an anti-semite on their tv show?? I doubt it.

Sadly, your piece about when Christ was born didn't display too much biblical or historical knowledge. The bible states that Herod the great who died in 4 BC was the one who tried to kill the baby Jesus (bring back Dan Snow - I'm sure the One Show history hero would have known this). So, it seems to me that the comet in 5 BC (which was ignored in favour of another event in 2 BC) ws a good bet for the star that the wise men followed. Shame, we could have had a better guesstimate if they'd followed the right star!

A long time ago I heard someone talk about the birth of Jesus being in the summer, which he'd worked out from the time that John the Baptist's father, Zechariah entered the Temple for his priest's duties. Apparently you can (if you know how)work out that date from the 'rota' when certain families performed their duties. You could then work forward from Elizabeth's pregnancy to Mary's, and this would show that Jesus was born in a summer month.
Despite my fumbling explanation, I've always thought this explanation to be the best.
I was more pleased to hear The One Show talking about the birth of Jesus as fact, rather than myth, which some programmes seem to do.

the one show is london based.
the producers and staff that make the show are london based.
when they sit down and consider a show they use london based bbc stars as guests or use guests who fly into london to plug something like a cd or dvd etc.
all the researchers are london based with london phone books and contacts.
all the above keeps costs down.why on earth would they have most topics and topic presenters from the regions of the country when they can do everything locally...to do otherwise would put up costs and mean that turkeys were voting for christmas.
the bbc has some really rubbish tv,,,they are aways in london flogging things, selling antiques showing us how to rip our house to bits and tidy the garden in 30 minutes..all in the south east.
we need a really good show that can showcase the whole of the nation but the one show isnt doing it.

As well as the fact that King Herod died in 4BC, and that Dionysius Exiguus was better at astronomy than at counting years, resulting in Jesus being born in 5BC or 6BC, as earlier comments have made clear, Christmas in Rome was celebrated on December 25th because that was the date of the pagan Roman festival of 'Sol Invictus'. The earlier and original date of Christmas was January 6th which is still celebrated in the Eastern Orthodox Church calendar, and which is still a major feast in the Western Church Calendar (Epiphany). The Christmas feast at first just celebrated Jesus' baptism by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan, and only later were the stories of his birth at Bethlehem included.
Complain about this comment
Relative to the date of Christmas the researchers seem to have overlooked that the probable year of Jesus' birth was 6 or 5BCE based on the fact that Herod the Great died in 4BCE and that that monarch was responsible (according to St Matthew 5: 16ff) for the slaughter of Bethlehem babies of two years old and under, in order to eliminate Jesus as a potential rival for the throne of Judaea.
So the speculation that the conjunction of planets in 2 BCE was the Star of Bethlehem appears to be entirely erroneous.
Further, informed Christians do not believe that Jesus' birthday was on 25th December, understanding that this day was taken over (in 4th century CE) from the Roman festival celebrating the birthday of the Sun-god at (or about) the winter solstice.
Nevertheless, happy star-gazing to all!

Can I just add my "+1" to the comments pointing out the poor research behind the birth of Jesus package. The date of 5 or 6BC is widely accepted amongst academics and theologians but lets not let that get in the way of a good story. It is a shame because if they had used the technology at their disposal they could have shed some useful light on the possible dates of Jesus birth. Instead those that didnt know about the earlier date have been misinformed whilst those who do are left feeling sad at such a poor advert for science.

I really enjoy this show and think more people should watch it. Its very informative and helps lots of people to learn more things. I enjoyed the section of the show which was allocated to astology and the wise men at the time of the birth of Jesus. The allignment was proven but not on December 25th but actually in June some 2000 years ago. After some research I learned according to Muslim's Jesus' birth was not in December but actually in warmer months- June, July or August. I found this rather interesting and thought i should share this with you. Keep the good work up! The show is brilliant.

I think your right, Im from an area in South East England. Muslim's here are not as some media stories have made them out to be. Here we have multi-faith organisations and we dine with each other and speak and share ideas of faith.
What we have to see is the wider picture, the British born muslims are no different to other youngsters, and why should they be?
rather than bombardig them with accusations shouldnt the awareness be raised that these radicals are only a small minority and we recognise this?
Community tensions can be irraicated in my opinion with intergration and equality.

Hi
On the show on Wednesday, Paddy O'Connell looked at the truth behind swine flu.
I just phoned the NHS Swine Flu helpline and all I got was crackling.
My friend says hes got Swine Flu, but I think he's telling porkies.
Swine Flu isnt a problem for pigs, because they're all going to be cured anyway.
The first sign of pig Flu is that you come out in nasty rashers.
The only known cure for Swine Flu has been found to be the liberal application of oinkment.
Swine Flu is getting serious, it has been reported to be a hamdemic, which may lead to an aporkolypse... But well get through. Where there's a swill there's a way.
If you receive an email from the Department of Health telling you not to eat tinned pork because of Swine Flu, ignore it ............it's just spam.
I have to say, I'm finding all these jokes about Swine Flu pretty boaring.
By the way, how did the pig go on holiday? The Swine Flu.
