What did you think of The One Show? Guest: Rory Bremner

The One Show Team | 15:51 UK time, Wednesday, 6 May 2009

Rory Bremner, contestants and Adrian and ChristineRory Bremner joined Christine and Adrian on the sofa for another special sixty minute programme.

Our wildlife expert, Mike Dilger, travelled to the U.S. to follow the story of Willy the turtle. Willy's adventures have taken her from the waters of North Carolina to the UK's south coast and back again.

Lucy Siegle examined the controversial issue of hospital car park charges. Share your views here.

Gyles Brandreth investigated the story of the photo that was used by Dr Barnardo back in the 1870's to publicise the work of his charity and raise funds.

Gary Morecambe, son of comedian Eric, told us about growing up with his father. Watch Adrian and Christine attempt the classic Morecambe and Wise breakfast sketch here.

And finally, two One Show superfans had their One Show knowledge tested on the programme. Play the online One Show quiz here.

No wonder Willy got lost. Even Christine doesn't seem to realise that Weymouth is in Dorset and not Devon. :-)

"Can I relax?" asks Mike Dilger.
"Well, never say never." says the American expert.

But doesn't that mean that he doesn't relax and that there is a possibility that he might be able too? The opposite of what she was trying to imply.

Particularly liked the coffin dodgers sporting the turtle T-shirts. Nice touch.

good old south east enetertainment again and as i said last night on the blog the needed visit to a south coast town and lots of topics from london and the south east.
gosh i was surprised when the one show top watchers were from kent and northampton(more south east people).
what a waste of time sending a turtle all the way from the south coast to the u.s of a.
its chances of survival are so small and to weigh up the cost and carbon footprint to send him all that way was pointless.
then we watched live as they plonked him on the sand.
a great use of bbc money.
it is time the show moved around the country and had different regional presenters giving us a feel of what goes on out of london.
the whole show is becoming complacent and too comfortable for the london based group.

which idiot decided it would be a good idea for a crowd of people to scream & shout whilst the turtle was brought down to the beach. these are supposed to be "experts", anybody with the slightest intelligence knows you don't make a lot of noise around wild animals. the turtle was clearly distressed as it immediately started to flap its flippers trying to get away from the noise. how far has its recouperation been set back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

his "sat nav" is obviously faulty and "nature" saw him end up in the south of england.
how much time, effort, cost(flying, fuel etc) was used on a turtle that will probably die very quickly as is unlikely to re adapt and live a normal life in the wild?

About Willy the turtle: Having taken an inordinate amount of care getting the poor creature to the states, you can trust the Yanks to turn the whole thing in to a sideshow. No wonder the poor thing looked "stunned" ( "look everybody, she's waving" ). When the time comes for release in to the wild, let's hope it's conducted with a bit more respect and dignity for Willy, i.e. with the minimum amount of people present, and keep that god-awful american woman well away.

Some things just shouldn't be treated as "entertainment". When we were taken back to the live broadcast of Willy on the beach did all the people there really have to clap and cheer? The sudden noise seemed to distress the poor turtle and then to have it's flipper waved to the camera by the woman that is supposed to be looking after is welfare was just too much. Poor handling of the situation BBC!

Poor Willy the turtle - I cannot believe that she has been subject to such cruelty and trauma and ended up with a barking old woman who thought it would be a good idea to grab the already distressed turtle's flipper for it to wave hello to One Show viewers. All in all a thoroughly distressing feature to witness for all my family and not to mention the poor turtle. Are you sure these people were 'experts'?

re 1& 2: The details you mention are unimportant to The One Show. For example, I have been admonished on this blog for expecting a high standard of production from The One Show. Never the less, I am confident that the producer will order a correction for tomorrow's edition. This is her usual practice. Though I confess that I have missed such corrections in the past. That is probably because I lack the concentration to follow the progress of the show for a full 28 minutes, or more. Has anyone here spotted previous corrections?

Rory Bremner was the star of the show, in my humble opinion. Guests like him make the show worth watching.

Hmm, so according to Mike Dilger, the Leatherback turtle has a 'shell'? There's a clue in the name - instead of a shell, Leatherbacks have a carapace covered by skin and oily flesh.

The One Show producer ignores this blog. The reason for which is obvious. If you really want to get through to her then you need to lodge a formal complaint. Please see the BBC website for details on how to do this. It is no more complicated than writing on this blog. The complaints are read and actioned, and you will get a reply. Crying out on this blog will achieve nothing.
I've got a couple of complaints lodged at the moment.

johnholyer...i have made complaints on the bbc website and you are right it is a more complicated system but still fairly easy.
however after complaining via the official bbc website about a different issue nothing happened other than they told me to put it in writing and take it further that way.
that was after 6 weeks and loads of emails expressing that they were sorry without really saying sorry !!!!
do you really think a formal complaint would result in the one show putting things right ?
    i do not.

    re 29: hockeykokeyalex,
The BBC management will not let the producer get away with so many errors of fact. That is providing they know about them in the first place. BBC management does not read this blog. You can bet that if the producer reads it, which I doubt, she will not report her factual errors up the line. She is unlikely to report her own failings to her boss. It is no exaggeration to say that the BBC's reputation is damaged by The One Show's lazy approach to accuracy. The formal complaints procedure is the only sure way to get through.
After all, the producer is on record as saying that the show is gloriously Reithian. It is not. But it could be, with a little effort.

hockeykokeyalex, I am only talking about matters of fact and not matters of opinion. The BBC can argue about whether or not they should be less 'londoncentric'. But they cannot dispute the manner of Thomas Wolsey's death and similar silly errors of fact to which the show is prone.

For that person who told me, with mighty exclamation marks, that I demand too high a standard from the show I can only say......no...never mind... to proffer a reply would be futile.

I liked the item on the turtle. It was ironic though that MIke Dilger was shown up by his US contacts.

When the item started he introduced himself to a young girl as being from the "BBC from England." Does he not know how much this grates on those of us who do not reside in England? It gives breath to the continual arguments for independence, as it portrays an inate arrogance which negates everything the Union stands for.

His US contacts however, were much more enlightened and consistently referred to the "UK". This unfortunately is not the first time that The One Show has been guilty of this and it spoils an otherwise great programme for us who live outwith England.
