What did you think of the show? Guest: Ricky Tomlinson
Tonight's guest felt right at home sitting on the sofa - it was Royle Family star Ricky Tomlinson !
Have you been celebrating St Georges day? Arthur Smith asked whether the English are too embarassed to celebrate being English? Are they?
Angellica Bell travelled to Hastings, where Robert Tressell wrote 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists'.
Mike Dilger looked at the squirrel hair traps being used to monitor grey and red squirrel populations.
And as part of memory week, Michael Mosley explored the condition face blindness. How good is your memory? Find out in our memory test.
What did you think of the show? Let us know here.

How many Labour supporters and left wingers can the One Show put on in one week? Plenty of Labour propaganda on tonight. Are there going to be any discussions on Burke, Locke, Smith, Rand, Friedman et al?
Any mention of Boris Johnson leading the St George's Day celebrations in London?
The guy from the Uni of Liverpool is talking nonsense in that Scotland historically did have its own government and for many decades before the Union was richer and better educated.
The important thing about celebrating St George's Day is to just do it and stop mentioning St Patrick's or Burns' Night (Scots don't really do St. Andrew's). In that sense having Burns' Night and an English Shakespeare's Day would be very apt.

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist is one of the greatest classics in English literature, no matter what political views you have. Thank you for doing a piece on it. It almost makes me want to watch the show regularly!

Quite amusing that St. George was supposedly a Jew, is buried in Lod in Israel and is the patron saint of many countries.

This is not meant as a shallow comment but Christine looks absolutely stunning this evening. The outfit really complements her natural elegance - don't you think?

Arthur Smith should note that patriotism is the love of your country, what he was talking about was nationalism - the conviction that your nation is superior to others. One emotion is based on love, the other on hate. Get it?

I haven't had the chance to see the programme much lately - it was a pleasure to come back to it this evening. On St Georges Day - we English are far too defensive about our nationality! The item on Robert Tressell was very thought-provoking and that on face blindness was fascinating - and a little bit frightening! The squirrels piece was also good and Ricky Tomlinson was a good guest - he had things to say which one might or might not agree with but put his point of view across well. All in all a good show. By the way, Christine looked absolutely lovely - she should put her hair up more often!

Christine, Adrian. Good show tonight, 23rd April. Who was the werewolf?? No really, good on Ricky Tomlinson. Didn't know he was touching 70 years.
Been watching The One Show for a long time (not every night) but I believe it's well established as one of the best current affairs, tv chat shows around. Keep up the good work both of you.
By the way, do you two get to read these comments?

The English do not seem to mind that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have many social and economic benefits that are not made available to England by our government.
They also rarely celebrate St George's Day and to encourage it would only stir up apathy.
A Shakespeare Day may be a better bet.

Was this a wind up to all Englishmen ? , a guy comes on rubbishing st George -our patron saint - on our day .
We know that for hundreds of years Englishmen have had pride in the legend (true or false ) of st George & likewise the Irish have st Patrick & the Scots have st Andrew & the Welsh have st David , I never hear anyone trying to tarnish their day !
What a shame - I hope the BBC has the courage to Broadcast the same critical drivel directly aimed at Patrick's Andrew's & David's day ,indeed can i please see the same lanky berk in Dublin on the evening of st Patrick's day during & after his verbal presentation .

I am in full agreement with Ricky about the lack of variety shows on TV. I saw Brian Conley's live show the other night at Leamington's Spa Centre and it was the best thing I've seen for years over two and half hours of pure entertainment.
Britains got talent is a good show but Britains already got talent it's just not shown anymore. I am sick to death of constant soaps and reality shows.

re 13: Current affairs!? The One Show brings us yesterday's news tomorrow and frequently gets it wrong.
I think I'll stick with Tonight, Dispatches, This Week, Daily Politics, Question Time and John Craven's Newsround if it were still on.

I could listen to Ricky Tomlinson all night, he is a very entertaining man. I'm tired of people constantly asking where Christine's dresses can be bought, they think they can look like Christine, if you are slim, young and good looking, you will look good in any old rag. Happy St Georges Day everyone, whats left of it.

I suppose Christine Bleakley might be forgiven as an Irish woman for
supposing that the English would for one moment 'break out the Union Flag' on St Georges Day. However, as a presenter surely someone would advise her that the English Flag is the Cross of St George.
As for Arther Smith (whoever he is), well, being a modest Englishman
perhaps I'd better not voice my views. Suffice it to ask, do we really pay these people out of our Broadcast Tax?
Please tell me they volunteer this rubbish for nothing.

I would just like to say that I find it very difficult to watch The One show because of Adrian Chiles' 'awkwardness'. He doesn't seem to be at all comfortable in his own skin. When any of the guests make a joke or a slightly controversial comment, he quickly interrupts (as if to make sure that no viewers are offended by it) and swiftly changes the subject. He never seems to gel well with his guests. He is not at ease with the camera. He seems to lack confidence and apperas 'twitchy' on camera he is always fiddling with his fingers or papers) and he very rarely smiles or laughs, except when winding up Christine, who is a much better presenter! Please lighten up Adrian...

How many more times does the BBC have to say that St George wasn't English?
It's funny that they never tell us that St Patrick wasn't Irish. Some say that St Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland was English!
St Andrew wasn't Scottish. He was a Jew living in the Middle East 200 years ago!! Why don't we hear about that? Legend has it that his bones are in Scotland!
eally? Imagine the scene. St Andrew has died. "Where shall we bury him, in the tomb nearby or in the cemetery across the road?'. No comes the cry we'll take him 2000 miles to Scotland? What is Scotland comes the reply? Don't know but that's where we are going, see you when we get back in about 4 years! Don't wait up".
What a load of nonsense! I look forward to the One Show on St Andrew's day. Maybe you can rip the mickey out of the St Andrew legend or St Patrick's Day when the One Show can tell every one that he wasn't Irish and could have been English?

re 27 and others:
The One Show is consistently an awful programme. This is entirely due to its poor presentation and low production standard. It frequently errs on matters of fact, especially where history is concerned. But the producer does not appear to care. The One Show with its audience of nearly 5 million defines the meaning of 'moving wallpaper'.

#27 Scotland's patron saint St Andrew is said to have lived in the Middle East 2000 years ago not 200 years (typo!).

Typical anti English drivel from the British Brainwashing Corps.
First - the Cross of St George is no more associated with the right wing than the Union flag. The BNP (BRITISH National Party) are British not English - how dare Comrade Smith try to associate the Cross of St George with the extreme right - the flag belongs to everyone in England and always has.
Interesting choice of commentators Comrades Smith, Hattersly and Mitchell. The BBC obviously didn't look very hard to find someone who actually loves England. Why why why choose Arthur Smith to report on something that he obviously holds in contempt?
Will the One show have a pop at St Davids, or Patrick's day? Or Burns night? Bet you life they won't.
Pathetic. It's this kind of anti Englishness from the BBC that makes me think that the sooner England moves towards independence the better.

#31 The BBC would of course have to be renamed the EBC The English Broadcasting Corporation.
Alternatively an English government might well decide to get rid of it!
The people of England would decide that one!

While thinking about English independence I wondered why not go a step forward and regain part of the Empire? I have realised that if England were to become the 51st state of the USA we would have an English President of the USA within one generation. This because the American electoral system relies to some extent on density of population. We would have re-colonised them. Try this premise with your American friends. It's great fun.

I posted earlier that the English do not seem to mind the social and financial benefits that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have which are not made available to England by our government.
If the people really cared it makes sense for the English to have their own government and encourage independence for Scotland on an urgent basis.
On another tact we have to put up with the negative response by the BBC to St George, Christianity and the English way of life but do not expect the same of Scotland, Wales or Ireland and definitely do not expect any negative comment on Moslems - they are really scared and avoid this one!

Yes - St. Patrick is commonly believed to have been born in either England or France, only being brought to Ireland in his teenage years. He is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland - and people actually celebrate that?!? As above, oh dear...

Re: 15. Er, yes why not? The items are current. Doesn't have to be the same script type as Tonight or Dispatches etc. This is very much low key and is right for the time of night.
Complain about this comment
re 38: I agree with you about the scripts, but surely they should be factually accurate? With The One Show this is frequently not the case. I agree that their coverage of items is low key in that it is trivial and superficial. The One Show in the main adopts an approach that is dumbed down and patronising.
I do not understand your reference to the time of transmission. Unless you are saying at that time of day the audience is probably not paying much attention to the show. Maybe they have just got in from work, are busy preparing a meal or putting the children to bed. I will agree with you if you are implying that The One Show is nothing more than moving wallpaper albeit very pretty at times.
