I think it is nice to promote recycling and reusing. We all want to be green when it comes to glass and tins-- but on the topic of nappies-- instead of promoting a machine to recycle nappies-- why not promote CLOTH nappies. They are easy to use, and can be reused numerous times. Show some of the new types and stop the problem completely.

good for joanna lumley supporting troops that have defended england and receive nothing in return, i can't believe that this country will allow illegal immigrants to stay in the country and yet not give these people what they have earnt and deserve. i think they would much rather allow an alleged terror suspect just released from quantanamo bay to make to return to england where he isn't originally from, allow him to use the justice system to his benefit and then he'll get hundreds of thousands of tax money in compensation, he's a drug addict who when to afghanistan to cure his drug addiction, yes right? the system is a farce but no one is allow to say it on television because it't not pc, i hope joanna wins their case in court and right provails for a change

we thank mrs thatcher for changing the country and moving us from production to service, from manufacture to the financial services dominated by the london/south east area-and we know just how good a country that has made us.
we are an unbalanced economy, huge wealth(debt driven) in the south east and the rest of the country picks up the scraps.
    what a thatcher legacy!!!!

She is a lovely person and I think that what she has done for the Gurkhas is great.
Now that she has done that, why does she not do something for the Channel Islanders?
The Channel Islands have had a link with the UK for much longer than the Gurkhas (since 1066) and were occupied by the enemy for almost five years during the last war whilst many of their men were away fighting in the British Armed Forces.
When a nationality act was brought in about 40 years ago (the one that famously caused Spike Milligan to take out Irish Citizenship) there was a great outcry because the people of Hong Kong were going to lose British Nationality.
No-one said a word about the Channel Islanders.
Any Channel Islander who did not have one parent or grandparent born in the EU suddenly found that they were no longer British Citizens but British Nationals and therefore had no right to live or work in the UK (or any other part of the EU).
At the same time any EU Citizen had the right to live and work in the Channel Islands.
    The same situation still exists.

re the living in the Islands, it is true that there are housing qualifications required in the Isalnds but that merely means that you are not permitted to live in certain properties - you are still allowed to live in the Islands' in other properties.

Whitbysimon, don't let Neil Oliver hear you say "England" - he obviously doesn't like it (ref: everything Neil Oliver has ever done on the BBC or C4)! I've never heard Dorset referred to as being in "the West Country of BRITAIN" before.

How would he like to hear phrases like "the British Highlands", I wonder?

What a pity that Hardeep Singh Kohli admitted that he did not know the purpose of the Commonwealth. Perhaps he should have informed himself better before the show since it was clear that he was outperformed by Joanna Lumley on the subject. Or is he too blinkered by what he refers to as 'the colonial past'? The Commonwealth brings benefit to many small countries, many of which have no other international political platform - obviously few of them belong to the EU, or the UN.

Firstly: Thank you for another great show! You always manage to,not only be interesting, but you also make me laugh at least once every time I watch your show.
For me the "giggle-of-the-day" today was the wee comment regarding the popularity of the English language, and that it was more or less because America is using and spreading the English Language worldwide.
    Hohumm!!
English and American are very similar, but in no way are they the same-trust me,I lived there for 15years...
....but the real giggle was that America is actually losing its one-language-only battle and fast becoming a dual language country~American and Spanish,in some States you won't get hired unless you speak either Spanish,or BOTH Spanish and American!!! (e.g. Florida)
Oh,and yes: Their Spanish is to Spain's Spanish,as Their 'English' is to ours here in Great Britain.
Keep up the good work,I love your show,

post 9, whitbysimon, I have to agree with you, It's a shame the Gurkhas, are not allowed to spend their retirement in the country they have fought so bravely for, they have a reputation seconded to none for their loyalty, bravery and fighting skills, ask any soldier who has fought along side them, they will say the same, its a national disgrace they a sent home when we have no further use for them.

Hi. I think Joanna Lumley is great and it was lovely to hear how passionate she is about recycling. However, nothing was mentioned about Freecycle which is now, I believe, National. It's a site where people advertise free to GIVE AWAY things to others. It's a great site, particularly for people who can't afford new furniture, a PC, a TV or even a bed etc.
Just Google Freecycle and put your town in as it's run locally so that pick up's can be arranged easily. Our Peterborough one is going really well.
    Have fun.

Joanna Lumley graced the show. Hardeep gets better and better. He certainly got the EU right. Why was Adrian so shocked by Hardeep's remark?

I was going to say something about my admiration and respect for the Gurkha. But these words by Sir ralph Turner say it all for me,

"Bravest of the brave, most generous of the generous, never had country more faithful friends than you".

Those were the words of Professor Sir Ralph Turner, MC, who served with the 3rd Queen Alexandra's Own Gurkha Rifles in the First World War.

As for me, I believe we owe the Gurkhas so much. I would feel personal shame if we let them down. They have earned, repeat earned, the right to live among us. I welcome them. We should feel proud to have the Gurkhas. Not least, because in battle they scare the living daylights out of the enemy.

Yes, before anyone says anything, for me it is not 'Mumbai' but 'Bombay'. That is among other things for the same reason that I do not say 'Roma, Koln, Den Haag, etc, etc.'

re 22: Take into account that the Commonwealth is an alliance of which we are a part. Then look at the spread of the Commonwealth countries around the globe.
Now imagine all that kinetic influence, even power. Your question will not be answered on The One Show. Better by far to enjoy their piece about insects in John Lennon's garden. Beetles in a Beatles garden, geddit.

PS. I am sure that hardeep knows very well the purpose and aims of the Commonwealth.
