Maureen Lipman has fallen into the common mistake about cockneys. They are not London eastenders but those born within the sound of the bells of Bow Church thats located midway between St Pauls & the Bank station on Cheapside.

Love the show, variety of topics and guests!
However, there is just one thing, what on earth was Anita wearing on her ears on Thursdays 26th March show? She is a very good presenter (credit where credits due) but those ear-rings were really distracting. Lol

hello........enjoy the show just wish they could be more imaginative with guests.
they are mostly working in london, have a book,cd,dvd ets to plug and are the usual suspects.
they usually turn up on alan tichmarsh's show or richard and judy etc.
wouldnt it be nice if they had an actor who didnt have a book to plug that was on at a regional theatre?
cast the net a bit wider?

Why the worry about getting more women to play sport? It followed the item about them all getting drunk. Why not encourage them to turn to God instead?

I was disgusted to hear Maureen Lipman's comments about everyone should be allowed to start smoking. Has she no concern for other people. She harped on about people consuming alcohol and running people over but what abou the people who are made to suffer because of passive smokers ? Not only to mention the drain on the NHS for treating the likes of lung cancer. If she has nothing more intelligent to say then get her of national television. Come of Maureen, time you started to be a bit more responsible about what you say !

Everything Was Going So Well - A Very Good Article By Sally Gunnell About Women In Sport. Well Balanced And Fairly Informative, Then Back To The Studio To Hear Christine Introduce The English Cricketers As "Our"s..........
Sorry Christine, The English Team Is Neither Your's, Nor Mine. I Am Not English, Neither Are You.
Should These Women Choose To Be Known As A Uk Team, Or Even a GB & Northern Ireland Team, Then We Can Share In Their Glory.
As Long As They Are The "England" Team, And Represent People From Berwick-Upon-Tweed To Land's End, They Do Not Represent The People Of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland And The Isle Of Man.
I Think This Is A Wee Bit Patronising, As Well As Potentially Offensive. The Scotland Men's Football Team Are Playing In Amsterdam On Saturday. Will They Be Referred To As "We", Or "Ours". I Think Not.
Please, remember where you are from
thanks

Women's sport - the problem is not about relative strength or speed etc, it's about hero worship. Women do it in their teens and then (normally) grow out of it, men seem to get stuck in it. So the other way of looking at the issue is not why so few column inches are about women's sports but why so many are devoted to men's.

Re the girls' cricket. Really enjoyed their interview but would have liked to know a lot more e.g. what clubs did they play for, are they in a league.
Agree with hokeycokeeAlex about 'stars' plugging their wares, it's tacky.
Always watch the show, excellent choice of interviewers.

Good point #12. I have to go online to find out who 'my' team is in the Olympics, as team GB doesn't really cover it for me despite the fact that I'm UK born and bred.
That said, Eire people can be just as wide of the mark: recent St Patrick's Day event in my area was strictly green-white-gold despite the fact that about 1 in 4 Irish people falls under the Union Jack.

At last a mention on the BBC for girls sport. There is not enough coverage of girls teams sports on T.V or in the papers.
This does have a massive impact on our young girls today. Not enough are taking part or getting involved in club sport.
If you want to know more about the womens cricket team all info about the team members is on the ECB website.
I would encourage everybody to go and see the womens team play this year , fixture on the ECB .(english cricket board).
We need more girls in sport !

I am really shocked at Maurreen Lipmans bizarre throw away comment about Air Hostesses, how she turned her nose up at these most helpful people, who help make our journey in the air bearable, and who are there not only to serve us tea, coffee etc, but to keep us safe and look after our well being, to say they were waitresses in broom cupboars was disgusting, and she says she doesn't like flying !!! she must be one of these rude and disrespectful people that are horrible to the cabin crew. I had respect for her before - not now, and this is the first time I have watched the One Show and it is the last, I won't pay to listen to people like this, she should be ashamed of herself.

I agree completely that womens sport is under reported and lacks TV coverage, but I don't think it is necessarily that they are women.
Sports coverage in the country covers 3 things - Mens Football, Rugby and Cricket. Anything else is pretty much ignored.
As well as the women's fantastic achievement at the weekend, there was also Mark Cavendish's stunning performance in the Milan-San Remo 1 day classic, and Alan McNish's extraordinary drive to victory in the Sebring 12 Hours. Neither gained any news coverage or column inches.

The England women's cricket, soccer and rugby union teams at international level are good television.
The England women's soccer team are especially good to watch.
The BBC could make something of women's sport if they only had the imagination to promote it.

This ""Women In sport"" thing. I have never seen so many women SPECTATING at sporting events nowadays. From top calss Football, to Horse Racing, Rugby Union/league, Cricket and even Darts, they are making up a huge number of the live audience, which Is great. I know alot of women however, who wouldn't even entertain going to watch other women play sport, It Is just not for them. I think It Is great there are great female sports stars, but somehow some way It Is always the lads I have seen as my heroes. Maybe It Is because I see men as the embodiment of a ""hero"", who knows? I dont know very much about Ancient Greece, but Im wracking my brain to think of a famous female sportsman from thos very early Olympics. There are probably some but I just cant (Dan Snow are you there?). I suppose women are the fairer sex, and sport has always had a competitive, brutal edge to It. Take Horse Racing, Im all for female Jockeys, but very few make It or get great rides. Somehow a woman isn't always ""trusted"" like a male Is. A woman by definition Is a homemaker and who looks after children, and generally not the competitor. I dont all together agree with that but that Is how alot of people In sport see It, both male and female.

I see, in The Times no less, that Adrian was unsuccessful in his attempt to save the word "embrangle" for the nation. I notice in dismay that the word "recrement" was also excluded: it is a much nicer word than "ordure", "dreck" or even "shit".
It is time for Adrian to bang the drum for obscure words in the language. Preferably in English rather than Estonia-Bromwichian.
My favourite is "mallemaroking". That is the revelry of sailors on ice-bound ships, and was originally Dutch. It has an alliterative link: mirth, merriment and mallemaroking. Also, Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary had a word meaning "wrapping oneself in a bullock hide and going behind a waterfall to meditate". Really!

re 3:I take your point: but if the person did not have a book, etc to plug then they would rightly demand an appearance fee. It is therefore cheaper to use those who will work for free in exchange for a plug. It is cost effective solution bearing in mind that Adrian Chiles at a fee of £1,000,000 p.a is a an expensive item.
The show is London centic because that is once again the cheaper option.
Programmes like the One Show are very cheap, simple and undemanding to make or watch when compared to Drama, for example a play written by Maureen Lipman's husband. That is true talent.
Maureen Lipman is in my opinion one of the finest actors we have. She gave good value on last night show.

English women won the cricket world title and compliments to them. However the Welsh men won the World Sevens but no mention outside Wales has been made. However the lack of interest of the BBC in all matters Welsh is well documented.
However my reason for commenting on Sally Gunnel's report is the fact that someone nominated Britain was as being the worst in Europe for covering female sport. Unfortunately yet again these comments come from someone who has no idea what happens outside the UK. They probably have never lived outside the UK. I have been living in various European countries for the last 40 years and am now based in Switzerland where television and radio coverage, unless it concerns female World Championships or Sking, is almost zero. The same applies for Italy and France, maybe only Germany gives female sport more recognition and that is not much. As far the printed media is concerned you maybe lucky to find female sport in some hidden corner. So please do not judge the UK against other countries unless you have done your research thoroughly. It reminds me of a comment made by a Swiss-Italian professor and TV giornalist "Be sure to do your research thoroughly as out there watching is always someone who knows more about it than you do". Please advise Christine and Adrian of this. Thank you.

Post 33, they are the Lindisfarne Gospels, written by monks on Holy Island, Lindisfarne, Northumbria, they are Gospels of mathew, Mark luke and John, written in the 7th century, London decided they would be better at keeping these historical treasures safe rather than a Northern Museum, they attract a lot of tourism, I suppose that is why they will only let them out on loan, its a bit of a sore point up north. We would like them back.

At last! the extremely poor coverage of women's sport has been highlighted. Girls will often quit sport in their teens. Our sportswomen are excellent roll models who would probably encourage more girls to continue or take up sport. Last week at the women's 6 nations final (they won, as you now know) there were lots of young girls asking for autographs of the players. Think how many more there would be if the games had TV coverage!
I have already written to the BBC complaining about the non coverage of women's 6 nations games and their victory last weekend, so was delighted to see Sally Gunnell making the point too.
Next year is the Women's Rugby world cup. Let's hope we have moved out of this unequal age and they get coverage. Come on BBC, you know it's the right thing to do.

Maureen Lipman's comment regarding cabin crew was completely thoughtless and insensitive. Me and my partner are both cabin crew and as well as been "waitresses" we are also trained to fight fire, evacuate an aircraft within 90 seconds, resuscitate people, treat all manner of illnesses, deal with air rage etc etc. Her off hand comments will of offended many last night, not least the fantastic BA crew who sucessfully evacuated all on the B777 that crashed short of Heathrow last winter. hopefully Ms Lipman will never be on one of my flights. The glamour which she sees as been in the past may in some ways be the case however spending up to a week at a time on a caribbean beach might be seen by some as quite glamorous! And while we're at it, what is so wrong with been a waitress anyway? As a fellow hullensian, I used to have respect and admiration for Ms Lipman. Now I have none.

As (volunteer) chair of an artisitc gymnastics club, from my point of view we have no difficulty attracting women (rather, in our case, girls) into sport. if we had the space and coaches we could probably double our membership and more. The problems we have are all around funding to provide facilities and finding more coaches. We do tend to lose many gymnasts (boys and girls)around the age of 15, but if you saw where we train you would quite understand why! People are much more likely to fund football, cricket, etc rather than gymnastics. I also agree with the issue over limited media (national/regional rather than local) coverage of women's sport. We tried to contact our local BBC and ITV people about our aim to build a new centre but they were not interested.

blog 30,,johnholyer.
the bbc is a public service broadcaster and as such has a duty to supply to all of the uk.
it is londoncentric (the bbc) and as such the rest of the uk does not get a fair service.
cost is not the issue, they should supply a non biased service within budget.
to follow your opinion to its logical end all shows would be in london, produced by london people etc.
that is not public service.
why is it cheaper to make the bbc londoncentric.
the capital is an expensive place-radio 5 live is moving north,,more of the bbc should do the same.
i do not know where you live(i live in bolton upon dearne in south yorkshire) but i pay my fee to the bbc and expect that the bbc will not be londoncentric.
regarding book,cd,dvd plugs-they should work within budget and if that means paying less to presenters, producers, directors and other beeb staff to be able to pay an appearance fee then so be it.
perhaps if the show was produced in the north, presented by a lower paid presenter(why are 2 presenters needed...it is less than half an hour with guests and films?) and the staff were not paid silly london salaries then some money would be left to pay guests who want to be interesting and entertain - to promote talent not a book.the
bbc -south east television for south east people.

re 43: No, my conclusion is not that all shows should be produced in London. Not all them are. For example the BBC Natural History Unit is based in Bristol and has been for many years. However, most of the One Show's guests are based in London even if they originate from elswhere. Consequently, bearing in mind the format of the One show it makes sense to produce it in London particularly as it goes out live. But I agee there are other productions that could move out of London.
After all London is the capital and as such belongs to us all.
On a personal note: I have spent 32 years of my life living and working in various capital cities around the world. Believe me of them all London is by far the best.

natural history unit ,a little bit different.
we are talking magazine type show, with current affairs and entertainment included.
why couldnt it be produced in manchester say ?
with guests that are interested in entertaining us not with a product to sell?
i do not own london anymore than i own sheffield.
i have travelled the cities of the uk and the world and i do not share your love of it(london),but even if i did i still believe in regional input and a fair share to other areas.
it is strange to read that other cities could not broadcast the show given its format and the fact it is live(or at least not as well)
the problem we have in this country is that over the last 30 years the south east has been allowed to boom into the huge force it is,,,the capital being the centre of it and in truth it gets the lion share of everyting.
new wembley, the olympics etc etc etc.
if the wealth of the country had been based on manufacture not on service and the busted banking system then we would have seen more regional input in many ways ,media and broadcasting included.
Complain about this comment
re 45: I have read your comments with interest. You sound a little bitter about London. As I understand it you are content for the show to be produced anywhere just so long as it isn't London. It would be interesting to know where you personally draw the geographical border between the south and north?
We must not forget that it is the banking system that finances manufacture. Without banks there can be no manufacture.
London raises more revenue from local taxation than does any other region in the UK. Furthermore only 45% of that revenue is spent on London. The balance goes to support the rest of the UK: mainly the North. The arithmetical truth is that London and the South East generate most of the wealth that keeps the UK going. That could explain why so many people migrate from the North to the South East. Where they contribute to creating that wealth. Adrian Chiles is a case in point.
Interestingly, you say that the south east has been "allowed" to boom into the huge force that it is. What do you mean by "allowed"? Are you suggesting that someone should have stopped the "boom": the government maybe? If so why? Are you suggesting that the "boom" should have been stopped simply because it did not take place in the North?
You accuse the "capital" of being at the centre of things: but isn't that rather the point of a capital?

i thank you because everything you put helps to emphasizes that the distribution in this country is wrong.
obviously you are a big supporter of what we have at the moment.
who should have ensured a more fair distribution not only of wealth but of jobs, housing, everything that makes up society ? -yes the governments,,,of which ever party.
regarding the amount of wealth/taxes from the south east for the north(rest of the country) that proves the point.
lets all move to london-that would appear to be your point.
the one show is the blog we are on,,,i do not care if the one show was made/produced in london or manchester...or bristol, sheffield etc just as long as the place that broadcasts it is not the centre of attention every time.
the problem is most of our news and current affairs is london based.
watch the news or watchdog or even the national lottery gameshows- all dominated by the south east and london.
living in south yorkshire it is very noticeable.
returning to the south east generation of wealth that keeps the whole of the uk going to you think that is right and proper,,,is it what the country needs,is it the best option?
was it allowed to happen?
imagine if we lived in a country where the banks and financial institutions(mainly run from london) hadnt ruined us.
imagine a country where the nation produced wealth from all over the regions.
the capital should be important but not overly important.
regarding your boom point i do not say it because i would have been happier if the boom was in the north,,i want equality and a fair distribution of jobs, housing, social care, hospital and health care etc.
but to expect people from the south east to want the same would be like asking turkeys to vote for christmas.
as for what i consider to be the south east, can i throw it back and ask what geographical area of the south east gives so much money to the north-where does your north start ?
are you bitter about the money from the south east being distributed to the north?
i am determined to end all blogs with kind words and i wish all bloggers whether they agree or not a lovely sunday.

Re 50: You ask me if I am bitter about money generated in the south east being distributed to north? No, I am not bitter about that. It is simply the way of the world. We are one country, the United Kingdom. We are not a gathering of tribal regions fussing to see which is the biggest and best and who should get the lion's share of the wealth.
It would help me more to understand if you could tell me where you personally draw the geographical border between the north and the south. As for me, since you ask, I do not make any such delineation. For me, we are simply the UK.
Clearly, you are not a supporter of the free market and yearn for a controlled economy.
You seem to be searching for someone to blame for London becoming a mercantile an financial force in the world. Well it was the Romans who started it. London soon became one of the most important and prosperous cities in the Roman empire. Centuries later the English King had to move his capital to London to avoid losing his throne. So rich and powerful had that city become. Subsequently, the North created and led the industrial revolution and the London bankers financed it. That is the way of trade. The end result was that we became the richest and most powerful nation the world had ever seen. Sadly, that is gone now. But maybe the north will give us another industrial revolution. We look to you for our future. We would even give you Adrian Chiles back.
