What did you think of the show? (24/02/09)

Host_Ryan - One Show team | 15:02 UK time, Tuesday, 24 February 2009

Patrick Stewart in The One Show studioRespected stage actor and former Star Trek captain Patrick Stewart joined Adrian and Christine to talk about starring opposite Sir Ian McKellan in a new stage version of Waiting For Godot. Patrick is pictured, above, coming face-to-face with a Klingon (money box) in the One Show studio.

One Show viewer Andy, from Ripley in Derbyshire, is also a big Star Trek fan. He's told us that he'll donate £10 to Comic Relief if we publish a photo of Christine in the costume she wore for last night's show. Andy, the photo, below, is dedicated to you!  Christine in a Star Trek uniform

Don't forget, you can donate to Comic Relief via the Red Nose Day website.

Also on The One Show (24/2/09): Anita Rani explored issues surrounding arson and spoke to those responsible for picking up the pieces after fires have been started. There's more information on protecting your home here.

Angellica Bell investigated how outlandish ideas from the world of sci-fi are finding their way into the technology of today.

Dan Snow wound back the clock to 1948 for the arrival of the Empire Windrush from Jamaica and the beginning of multi-culturalism in the UK for the latest of his Five Days That Changed Britain. To send us your own suggestions, and for your chance to quiz Dan, click here.

We joined John Sergeant at the Oldie of the Year Awards in London.

In his latest bid to find places dubbed as a Heaven On Earth, Hardeep Singh Kholi visited an American-style gated retirement community in Lancashire.

Also: Chris Moyles' appearance on The One Show sofa yesterday is still prompting heated debate. Have your say here. You can also watch our exclusive post-show interview with the great man himself here.

Plus: Send us your pictures of you dressed as your favourite historical figures. And, remember, you can still have a go at our Body Tricks.

    Although Patrick Stewart believes playing MacBeth is as thrilling as any part he has ever undertaken his portrayal of Prospero in the Tempest at Newcastle's Theatre Royal was spellbinding! The most stunning theatrical performance I have ever witnessed.

    What a pity that Adrian Chiles is unable to converse in any useful or interesting manner with an intelligent actor such as Patrick Stewart. With his forehead permanently furrowed and his knees akimbo he looks, and acts, like the lightweight he is. It's time he gave up his place to someone more intelligent and able.
    Incidentally, you should check the grammar of your contributors. The 'expert' on arson who is presumably qualified in some way as a psychologist does not know the meaning of the word exacerbate which she replaced with another inaccurate one in her first sentence!

    I am slightly annoyed at the presenters of 'The One Show' by placing a 'Star Trek' Swear box on the table.

    Star Trek isn't a swear word and people like Patrick Stawart wouldn't be as well known as he is, if it wasn't for the show.

    This show is too fastpace, the presenters are too busy giggling and interrupt their guests whilst they are talking. This novelty is waring of and is more teeth-grating than entertaining now. I think both Presenters in recent months have spoilt the show. NEW PRESENTERS PLEASE, not in the style of ageing Blue Peter ones too !!

    How sad that those commenting above spend valuable time watching a show they apparently don't like.... perhaps they don't like themselves either, hence the self-torture.

    re. post 8, perhaps if the show lasted an hour, the pace may slow down, too much squashed into a half hour. The retirement home looked lovely inside, but from a distance it looked like an open prison, perhaps when I'm in my 80s, my view will change, and safety will be my main concern.
    re. post 10. thats a bit harsh, why don't you do it for comic relief?

    Not quite sure how you managed it on a live show - pre recorded yes - clever trick

    Hello mirroruptonature,

    =======

    Steve (the studio director) replies :

    During the film report before Hardeep "beamed in" we sat Hardeep in, framed the two shot for him and Patrick, then locked the camera off. We then got Hardeep to leave frame for 30 seconds whilst we recorded the two shot with Patrick and the empty seat. Then Hardeep sat back in.

    When we came back live we cut to a split screen of the live camera that was locked off on a two shot Patrick sitting on the sofa live, and the recorded empty empty bit of the sofa (masking Hardeep who was really there live). Then we did a pixel-wipe to remove the recorded empty sofa and reveal Hardeep live.

    So the only pre-recorded bit was the empty bit of the sofa that you briefly saw. Patrick and Hardeep were always live. Only works if you can lock off the camera, and record the empty sofa just before you need it (so that lighting and framing match).

    =====

    I hope you understood that mirroruptonature - I'm not sure I did - I'll have to read it again.

    Thanks for visiting the One Show website.

    Patrick stewart made 24/02 the best One Show I've seen.

    Favourite article was the Angellica Bell bit on science fiction predictions and how SF writers get so much right. I think the best answer came from the late Bob Shaw, NI SF Writer: 'Science fiction writers use the shotgun effect, predict everything and sooner or later it will happen.'

    Lot of moaners here about the presenters, Adrian and Christine are fine., stop whingeing.
