Comedian Jo Brand was in the studio, telling us about Comic Relief.
Dom Littlewood gave us an update on the government's Warm Front heating grant scheme.
Hardeep Singh Kohli experienced life as a Benedictine Monk.
Gyles Brandreth examined the rise of left handers. Left is best, right? Add your comment.
And Carol Thatcher continued the Claim to Fame series. She visited Tregothnan in Cornwall, home to Britain's only tea plantation.

Good to see your piece about Belmont Abbey. I spent several very happy breaks there and remember Brother Bernard very well. I was sorry to hear of Abbot Alan Rees's death. He was very kind to me when I attended his plainsong break. I think of the place often.
As a left-hander, I was also very interested in my fellow lefty Giles Brandreth's piece.

Dear One Show, please please please can you appoint yourselves as the antidote to the recession?
We have just watched the BBC news & it is so depressing, obviously we live in serious economic times but nurturing this gloomy outlook will really only make people become inward looking when they need their heads up and courage!
As an example on tonights news, the focus was on the loss of 1000 London Transport jobs, with scant coverage of the fact that these jobs may be transferable to the new tube link project. They didn't even mention that subway are creating 5000 new jobs ( worldwide).
Come on guys, get your roving reporters out there to find the GOOD economic news!!
Thank you, Sally Brown xxx

Just watched Jo Brand talking about Comic Relief - a great cause...but isn't it just a tad hypocritical of the BBC to devote all this time, effort and money to an event to raise awareness and fundraising for the plight of children overseas when it won't run a single minute for Gaza?! So happy to get involved in showing that governments are doing enough for one group of people as long as it doesn't upset anyone we're friendly with?

Because the entire world (30 years ago) was a right handed world I learnt to use my right hand. I only use my left hand for writing and drawing. Everything else I do with my right.

I just watched Gyles Brandreth's report on left handedness.
I am myself left handed and as a small child I was ambidextrous.
I would write with both hands, but Kings Road Primary school, Rosyth (forces family at the time) forced me to place my left arm behind my back in an attempt to make me right handed. This happened in the late 80's . Not long ago at all and i believe counter productive .
One of the main problems I had was trying to write, When the teacher tells everyone to tilt their paper it is the wrong way for a left hander causing them to "hook hand" Also the correct way to form letters is reversed. Too late for me to change now but there are left handed calligraphy sets on the market, I tried one but it was too late to change the bad habits (the nib of the fountain pen is angled).
Both Father and grandmother are left handed, Brother is right handed.

With reference to being left-handed - I would have loved to have seen someone right-handed attempting to use a left-handed pair of scissors! This would have demonstrated just how difficult it really is in a right-handed world. Left-handed goods are few and far between and extremely expensive. Once again a left-handed musician has trotted out the myth the musical instruments are designed for right-handers. It's just not true and people like Paul McCartney who go for backward instruments are doing themselves a grave dis-service. How much better might Paul have been if he'd played the correct way round? My sister-in-law is a left-handed viola player in a professional orchestra and she tells me that whereas 10% of "ordinary" people are left-handed, 50% of her string colleagues are left-handers. It may be that not everyone will agree with her conclusion but I think the One-Show owes it to left-handed viewers to put this point forward so musicians like the Ukelele player featured think several times before spending time and effort and money doing something that may be unnecessary and even put them at a severe disadvantage.

Good grief, they're worse than mean-spirited little children and should feel hugely embarrassed of themselves. It's obvious they went out of their way to get the eccentric but well-meaning Thatcher into trouble by cynically playing the race card.

How the BBC can be taken in by all this I don't know - to justify its stance in continuing to overpay and impose the sickening Ross on us I suppose - thats the "not fit to be excrement on Carol Thatcher's shoe" Ross.

How pathetic is the BBC and how sad is Adrian Chiles to 'sneak' on a fellow presenter. It was apparent that he couldn't stand Carol Thatcher from her appearance on the show and it now seems that he was determined to get rid of her. Unluckily for him, most of the british public have come out in her defence. The word gollywog has not been banned from the English dictionary. Indeed, gollywogs are still being made quite legally. I bought a keyring only the other day made by a firm in Kent. I shall now return to the shop and buy some more. Chris Moyles and Jonthan Ross get off lightly, but just because Mr Chiles and Ms Brand don't like someone, a presenter has to be fired. Talk about double standards.

I am a regular viewer of the One Show and enjoy it very much. I however have noticed in the past that Carol did not got treated very well when she joined the presenters on the sofa. Jo Brand could not hide her obvious dislike of Carol on the show probably because of whose daughter she is. How small minded is that. I am appalled at the hypocrisy, double-standards and amorality again shown by the presenters and bbc staff associated with this show and the editorial 'management'. You have no compunction giving wide coverage to "personalities" such as Jo Brand and Jonathon Ross allowing them to broadcast material which is wholly offensive to me and thousands of others, but ban Carol Thatcher for a private comment. Why is her apology unacceptable but the desirory one offered by Ross is sufficient to re-instate him? Are we no longer to make mention of the Robinson's golly - a feature of our childhood which had no connotations of insult to us? To say that someone looks like the doll that probably played a large part of her childhood is not a racist comment - just an innocent remark from someone of her generation.
This was surely an occasion where a quiet word was in order behind the scenes. I'm appalled at Adrian Chiles for deliberately stoking this up, I too noticed the hostility of Jo Brand to CT and felt sorry for her being in such unpleasant company.
The BBC is so quick to condemn and show a knee-jerk reaction to any word which might possibly, in some circumstances, somewhere, cause some slight offence to someone. Words are not racist, people are; if the person behind the word isn't racist then there is no racism.
Ironically, this type of reaction exacerbates community relations by infuriating anyone with any common sense.

The remark made by Carol Thatcher in The One Show Green Room last Thursday caused considerable offence.
The One Show's Green Room is a busy space and, on Thursday, there were external guests and several members of the One Show production team present, as well as Adrian, Christine and our celebrity guest Jo Brand.
In some reports it has been suggested that the word in question was used in jest. This was not the case and the use of the word to describe a black sportsman caused instant offence.
Jo questioned Carol about it at the time but, contrary to some recent press reports, neither she nor Adrian contacted the press. The following day, a number of people who had either heard the comment or learned of it, made their feelings known to the show’s executive producer, who raised the issue with Carol.
By this point, the press had contacted the BBC with details of the incident asking for comments. Carol was given every opportunity to discuss the issue and offer an unconditional apology but declined to do so.
Carol’s occasional role as a roving reporter for The One Show requires her to work closely with the team, report on a broad variety of issues and meet a wide range of people across the country, many of whom are unlikely to find her comment acceptable in any circumstances. As a result, The One Show will not be asking Carol to appear on the show again.

I am sure if Carol had done this once she would be doing it again. In my experience racists ( especially those who claim not to be) have the bad manners to tell you their distasteful views repeatedly, with no regard for other colleagues feelings, race or religions.

I am in my late 40s and have been an avid watcher and listener to the BBC all my life. After hearing the reports of the Carol Thatcher affair in the media and the depressing rant by Jay Hunt, the Controller of BBC One on the Today program on Radio 4 this morning, I feel I have to add my comments to the tidal wave of complaints the One Show and the BBC deserve to receive.
To describe the word Golliwog as "hugely offensive" in the context it was used is just another example of the PC hysteria which is currently gripping this country and the BBC in particular.
BBC management hypocricy and double standards knows no bounds yet again. While it broadcasts the "edgy" foul-mouthed humour of celebrities such as Jo Brand, it chooses to be "hugely offended" by lighthearted but anachronistic words like Golliwog uttered off air in a private conversation.
Get Real BBC!

Absolute garbage BBC. I have just watched the Controller on BBC News, who explained that Ross was genuinely contrite, whereas Thatcher had not apologised....that was the difference ( Hitler must be kicking himself, if only he's known it was that easy ! ). So Ross can be involved in a broadcast item which would have immediately struck at least a doubtful chord with whoever heard it ( I didn't ).....and get away with it.....while Thatcher is taken to task for an old-fashioned remark, that wasn't broadcast, and much less likely to cause offence.
Obviously, Ross wasn't sacked because it would have cost the BBC even more of the licence-payers money to get rid of him. Thatcher, on the other hand, is presumably freelance and can be dispensed with.
When will people realise that, by making such ridiculous drama out of these crises, you are only making matters worse. Obviously she should not have said it.....but by ignoring the comment it would have been quickly forgotten. Now, for every person who was offended, there is a future BNP member who will jump to Thatcher's defence.
As for Chiles.....he was the one good thing ( Thatcher excepted ) about the One Show. His "offence" at the remark is manufactured and calculating.
Let me know when Thatcher is reinstated, and I might start watching again.,,,,while you're at it, get rid of that Tufnell idiot.

Well, excuse me, does that mean you can do or say anything on the BBC private or otherwise, and if you then apologise, as in the case of J.Ross ,then everything is fine. I will no longer be watching the One Show as I do not believe that it was not Adrian Chiles who 'shopped her'. The BBC have double standards, they patronise the likes of J Brand and J. Ross yet just because Carol Thatcher is who she is, she was sacked. I hope she gets a better job on one of the other chanels, and we can see more of heron th4e box. I like her eccentricity and sense of humour. And I like Golliwogs too! Keep your spirits up Carol.

I thoroughly enjoy The One Show and watch it most evenings. However I noticed on the show last Thursday that Jo Brand was very unfriendly, verging on hostile, to Carol Thatcher. I didn't think there was any need for her to have made a snide remark about the Thatcher government - it was inappropriate under the circumstances. I also thought Adrian Chiles was less than friendly with Carol Thatcher. Christine Bleakley is a marvellous, professional presenter and a breath of fresh air beside the grumpy Chiles. When I read about the remark Carol made I was shocked at her lack of sensitivity and understanding. She should have apologised. However I can't help remembering just how unpleasant the atmosphere seemed to be between her and Brand and Chiles. Made me wonder if the whole thing got ratcheted up by them which made Carol Thatcher dig her heels in and refuse to apologise. She's still in the wrong. However I'm not the only person who noticed how rude and unfriendly Brand and Chiles were towards her. An unpleasant and unprofessional situation all round.

I am not surprised to hear that Jo Brand was involved in getting Carol Thatcher sacked, as I suspect that she harbours prejudice against the Thatcher name. I am more surprised to discover that Adrian Chiles was also involved. Having been a regular viewer of the One Show, I am now an ex-viewer. The BBC has shot itself in the foot yet again!

i'm sure that carol thatcher's comment about the golliwog look was not in the least intended as a racist remark. for pete's sake when i was a child golliwogs were in all toy shops. if the word is used in jest to describe someone in private it's not like saying to someones face that they look like one, especially if they are not white skinned.
one of my grandchildren came home from playschool the other day singing ba ba pink sheep. my daughter remarked that it should be ba ba blacksheep. my grandson said that they were told not to say black. why are so many people, who obviously have very little else to do, trying to make out that so many of us are racists. in the real world the rest of us just want to survive all the rubbish that is dumped on us in this country and get on with our struggle to keep our jobs, eat, keep warm, run our vehicles and try to spare time for a little leisure. get a life.

I'm a first time blogger incensed by the remarks and patronising tone of Jay Hunt today. How dare the BBC sack Carol Thatcher on the basis of a private remark-not on air.Whoever reported her should be sacked.Big Brother is alive and well and living at the BBC.

Can someone please tell me what is wrong with the word golliwog, I mean it is a doll nothing more nothing less, it had to be taken off jam jars due to over sensitive people and their reactions.
I think it is all a load of twaddle what has happened to poor Carol, she was brilliant on the show, to be honest I think if they did ask her back which they won't as they are too stupid, she should tell them where to go, which could be Outer Mongolia for all I care now.
Although that would not be fair on the people who stay there.

I do love the one show and I do not like to criticize, but I feel that the Carol Thatcher matter is out of all proportion. It looks to me as if someone did not like Carol Thatcher and that was the reason behind the complaint a personal dislike.
I think Great Britain should still have freedom of speech, and perhaps we are sometimes unkind when speaking of people ie as in paddy for irish, jock for scottish, people are not being racist especially if they are of a certain age when these terms where not meant to be derogatory

I am moved to write because I am disappointed that so many of my fellow Britons do not understand the deep offence that ill judged, or racist comments, can make. Anyone who deviates from the majority in any society is subject to consistent taunts, 'jokes', insults, threats and violence. That is a sad flaw in human nature. Nerves can be touched easily in areas of this sort and understanding should be shown to those subject to these problems.
For my own part, I am, as a human being, offended when racist, sexist or generally offensive comments are made. I know that I have offended in the past and have been at pains to redress.
Carol Thatcher may, or may not, consider herself racist. Whether she likes it or not, she was a representative of an inclusive, multicultural and, above all, positive programme. The term 'Golliwog' meets none of those aims. A brief investigation into the origin of the term and character will confirm this to anyone.
The method by which the comments made their way from the Green Room is irrelevant, as that is, by the BBC's own description, a place for all those connected with the days output to gather. It is safe to state that none of those present would have gone into the room with an anti-Carol agenda given the remit of the programme and the context of the Green Room.
The person offended and with no apology is therefore the one wronged.
If Thatcher had public ally recognised the problems associated with the term, the offence caused and had unreservedly apologised, then I can see a very positive outcome for all concerned and Carol would have shown herself to be a thoughtful person well able to admit to a mistake borne only of a lack of understanding. Which of us can claim not to have been in that position?
As it stands, Carol Thatcher appears as an ignorant racist. What other conclusion can one come to given that she will not apologise.
The BBC has made the correct decision.

Just heard on BBC News that Carol was NOT sacked from the One Show, but that she would not be asked back, if thats not being sacked, then please explain it.
This action from The One Show has made them look stupid.
Glad to hear that Carol will still be working for the BBC . Although I would imagine she would not want to go back to the One Show anyway. I agree with other comments, it was very obvious that Jo Brand did not like Carol, Adrian you should have stood up for Carol, Shame on you.

I think that a few minutes slot to discuss the Carol Thatcher affair should appear on the One Show. We can get Adrian Chiles and Christines views and that of a neutral BBC commentator. I believe that Carol Thatcher was a popular contibutor to the show and deserves a hearing on the show that gave rise to the GOLLIWOG affair. It might be said that she can appear on the show again, but I am sure she would decline the offer.

My wife collects 'Golliwogs' and she is very upset about how Carol has been treated.
So I have knited her a 'WHITE' Golliwog. Yes, she called it 'Carol'.
Its about that the BBC looked at how they work. The Queen only had a quick news flash. Yet she is responable for what the shop sells. The monies from the sales do go to her in a round about way.
I for one will not be watching the one show any more.

Have to agree entirely SaintDan, and as predicted , it wasn't a one off. As an employer you can't allow it to continue.
No matter that some people liked the public face of Carol Thatcher.
Any employer can't put up with her braying her racist views to guests in the background.
I feel it is poor the way that people above have personally condemned Adrian Chiles and Jo Brand above.
Carol Thatcher was a reasonable reporter, though her manner of 'spweech' made her almost unintelligable..not her fault I know. There are however plenty other good reporters out there.

Would Chiles complain about an albino golliwog ie white.NO.its PC gone mad and we the licence fee payers should be listned to.
I have heard Jo Brand use worse language on TV,but then again she is a "STAR",so the BBC keep quite.

My wife and I also noticed the hostility emen ating from Jo Brand toward Carol Thatcher so we have no doubt on who snitched to the BBC Stasi.
We would also like to add that we think Christine is the lovielist and most natural presenteron TV. So what on earth persuaded her to allow her to let herself
be portrayed as some sort of Glamour Girl in
the Mail on Sunday Magazine. Come on Christine you are just not that sort of girl.

Golly - Worthy Oriental Gentleman
My wife is black - my daughter mixed race.
Am I a racist to feel anger at how the BBC and fellow informants have lost their sense of humour
If our society now believes it acceptable to dismiss collegues for off the cuff conversational remarks said in a relaxed winding down atmoshere then the police state and big brother are now with us.
It is time to stop the rot, regain our sense of humour and accept that everyone is an individual and capable of upsetting someone all the time - this does not mean they should lose their job or be locked up.
The BBC needs to chill out
