What did you think of the show? (13/01/09)

Host_Ryan - One Show team | 14:31 UK time, Tuesday, 13 January 2009

Adrian is back. And he's got a beard (pictured right). He went off to shave with the office's cries of "it's Ray Mears!" ringing in his ears.

Adrian with beardAdrian joined Christine on the sofa to welcome guest David Cameron, Leader of Her Majesty's Opposition. Members of the team had a chance to put questions to him. Add your comments.

Justin Rowlatt looked at sentencing for the most serious crimes. Should life mean life?

Our wildlife expert Mike Dilger travelled to Slimbridge to test a duck decoy.

For the second film in the Giving it all up series, Carol was in the Lake District with Jo Hampson and Georgina Perkins. This pair gave up successful careers in the police force to run a small business. What will you give up in 2009?

The All Saints Parish Church in Ikley has launched a new cookbook which contains Gordon Brown's recipe for vegetable and mozzarella parcels and David Cameron's recipe for spicy meatball pasta. The One Show's Iain Lee discovered which is more popular with the public.

And finally: Sing us a Bee Gees song and you could appear on The One Show. More info here.

It is a shame that the whole life sentence issues was dealt with in such a trivial manner. There needs to be a little more knowledge of the problem if these issues are going to be dealt with on national tv. Understanding the reality of the prison system would change peoples views and enable a more informed opinion. I know you don't have time on air but it is frustrating when these things are covered in a manner as though we are all uninformed and stupid. Increasing the intellectual perceptions of the watching audience would be nice. Thanks.

Yes they may have taken a pay cut of 85% but they must be entitled ( bearing in mind their past police grade)to a joint police pension worth over £ 50,000 a year to back up there lifestyle.
At present interest rates of 1% it would need funds of £5 million for the rest of us to
enjoy the same security. Rather disengenous of the programme to ignore this!

I understand we are going through a very tough time; I am a small business owner myself struggling to keep our people employed. However, I think programs like the One Show should turn the corner and become part of the solution. Why not encourage the viewers to speak up and share ideas that might be useful and practical for the nation? How about allowing mainstream people to put ideas forward so that the focus is shifted to a more positive outlook? In the same way the media has assisted in making the issue so much bigger, the media should be able to help reduce the margin for such a grim outlook on the current situation. The media's constant negative approach to the current economic situation can only help perpetuate our already negative mind set.

Surely if your contention that Gordon Brown was asked 'nothing relevant or challenging' then it was the PM who was being trivialised.

It is somewhat amusing to note that within a couple of posts of each other we have people complaining that the show was showing a bias towards the Tories, and someone else complaining that it was biased towards Labour.

Regarding murderers, they should be either put away for life or perhaps just 'put away'. With such lenient sentences there is no deterrent and what sentence do you give for so called, lesser crimes (burglary, violent acts, etc., etc.)

One did not suggest that both of the retired Police Officers were of such a senior age.. but on leaving the service are they not entitled to a 'bounty' and a financial package which can be deferred (or has to be deferred but still becomes a future 'cushion'). I honestly dont resent them having any of this, and admire the change of lifestyle, but one should highlight the favourable package which future generations are committed to paying for....yes I know you contributed! but relative to the outside world....

We know exactly where Steve is coming from re: police pensions... HOWEVER! We each served for fourteen years and our pensions would have been frozen (no bounty) until we were 60, and had either of us died, our pensions would have died too. So when we left we put took them out of the police pension, put them in pension funds and have lost most of it in 2001 and again this past year... in the same boat as so many others.

I am no David Cameron fan , but do not like to see this level of bias.
It is interesting that a number of people interpreted The Chiles' gaff about winning the next election as tacit support. I think it is more likely very lazy journalistic style by the vastly overated Mr Chiles.

Cameron is a lightweight politician whose faux choking on Brown's pastry parcels confirms that the man's sense of humour is better suited to CBBC than The One Show. For future reference, Christine, I thought Cameron preferred to called 'Dave' rather than 'David'.

My disappointment at this fawning treatment of Cameron by The One Show was further exacerbated by Carol Thatcher's appearance in the same show. Is it just me or is The One Show developing into a peak time party political broadcast on behalf of the Tory Party?

The BBC would never call someone "common" or tell someone "you're a bit asian aren't you?". Cameron held himself extremely well. Makes a change for the BBC to allow Mr Cameron airtime. Oh - and to all you Labour supporters on this blog - "insulting to majority of the population". Hardly. Look at the opinion polls. 35% were insulted and 42% were supported. I suppose Labour supporters never let facts get in the way of their views. Cameron is the future, a man who will rescue us from this treachourous, lying, deceitful and dangerous government.
