What did you think of the show? (15/12/08)

Host_Ryan - One Show team | 14:01 UK time, Monday, 15 December 2008

Bette Midler joined us from New York while Mr Michael Palin kept Christine and Adrian company on the sofa. This is Michael's third visit to The One Show studio, and so we're asking 'Why do we all love Michael Palin'?

Last month Home Secretary Jacqui Smith unveiled plans to arm front line police officers with stun guns, Anita Rani went to see them in action. Should the police carry  stun guns?

Carol Thatcher looked at the history behind the traditional festive poem, 'Twas the night before Christmas'.

And while we're on the subject of Christmas, this weekend our Christmas single 'Let's Not Fight This Christmas', charted in the download charts at Number 128. Watch the video, see the behind-the-scenes making of the video and learn how to download music.

And Mike Dilger visited the Orkney Islands, to take part in a survey counting the numbers of snow white seal pups.

If Santa Claus were to grant MY wish it would be for a law passed to protect the survival of the letter "R" in the vocabulary. It seems that all you have to do to get onto TV is to have a speech impediment. Estuary English has almost eliminated the treminal "T"....now it seems no-one can pronounce the letter "R".
Pleas....there must be SOME people in the UK who can actually SPEAK English!!!

I thought the show very entertaining. Michael Palin was a joy to see as he always is. Not sure why Bette Midler was on though. Maybe I missed that, or was it just so Adrian can witter on about how much he likes her? The article on police tazers was interesting as well. I have expressed my views elsewhere on that. I particularly enjoyed Carol Thatcher's article on the poem. That did educate me as I knew that not. Overall, a pleasant half hour.

It's not just the One Show but I deplore the bad usage of the english language on this and numerous other shows.
I can foresee the day arriving (and it's not far off) when two new words will be suggested for the Oxford dictionary.
    The words Somethink an nothink.
If they succeed it will be in no small measure due to guidence. John Snagg would be turning in his grave to see the depths that the beeb has dropped to.

Why did the BBC have to run an article at that time of day proving that Santa was just a story that originated from a poem? It broke my heart when I walked into the room and found my children silently crying.

An interesting article, granted, but thoughtless broadcasting it at that time of day when young children are still up. Hopefully the BBC will not make the same mistake again and ruin the magic of Christmas for so many young children.

Can you answer a question for me please? I have asked the same question of The Paul Ogradie show, and TOP GEAR, both with out a response. The question is...... When showing us The Green Room, what was the music being played called please? Because I happen to like it.

    Thanks.

    A big "R" for ...

O how we all love One Show’s hack ‘Cawol’ Thatcher
We-re ‘weminded’ of ‘Margawet’ each time that we watch her
We ‘welish’ each word that begins with an “R”
That they put in the ‘scwipt’ of this blonde ‘wising’ star

And we wait for the day when the one Show’s ‘pwoducer’
Decides on the ‘pwogramme’ he must ‘intwoduce’ her
To Jonathan ‘Woss’ her male partner in ‘cwime’
Then both of them can have a whale of a time...

‘Wehearsing’ their words that don’t come out ‘Qwite’ ‘wight’
That put us poor viewers in an awful plight
When we can’t understand what the heck they are saying
And wonder what game TV programmes are playing...

Employing such people to ‘pwesemt’ / ‘nawwate’
And we’d like you to ponder for public debate
How people like ‘Cawol’ (and ‘Woss’) come to be
The people you choose to adorn our TV

Maybe this would be better placed in The Ones Show’s "curious complain(t)s" section)

Two of my favourite guests in one One show! Bette Middler and Michael Palin! What a treat!
But I am a little sad about Let's not fight this Christmas... I tried various sites to download this great song: I-tunes, HMV etc. And I always get the same answer: due to geographical reasons you cannot download this song. I live in Holand and as you must know by now, your show is very popular over here.
I won't be a happy bunny at Christmas, sniff, sniff! Instead I'll be loney this Christmas without the song and all of you lovely presenters on the One Show!

The piece of music played on the show last night when "we visited" the green room was "Left Bank Two" by the Noveltones, made famous as the music played in the gallery during the popular TV programme 'Vision On'.

Loved the show by the way

With regards to #6, if your children are so peculiarly sensitive as that, then perhaps you shouldn't leave them alone whilst watching TV?! For my part, I thought the Xmas poem bit dealt with the issue well, and was very informative -- it *didn't* say St Nick didn't exist as far as I can recall, just that our view of how he looks etc has changed over time and this poem was one thing that contributed to this...

    Hi eddie168,

Melanie Grant - the Editor of the website here. After your comment about our coverage of Twas The Night Before Christmas, I got this response from our Series Commissioning Producer, Seb Illis:

Dear Eddie, we're so sorry to hear your children were upset by the film about Twas the Night Before Christmas. Perhaps you could reassure them by watching it again with them on iplayer. Far from suggesting Father Christmas is a story originating in the poem, the film actually explains how the poem offers us the first accurate description of Father Christmas. As Carol says at the end, "Few of us have seen him, but we all know what he looks like" and this is because of the poem.

As always eddie, we like hearing your views, so keep telling us what you think of The One Show.

    Thanks
    Melanie
