What did you think of The One Show? Guest: Bill Bailey

Post categories:

The One Show Team | 11:39 UK time, Tuesday, 12 January 2010

Adrian and Christine were joined by Bill Bailey.

The snow has caused weeks of chaos for many up and down the UK. However, as Dan Snow found out in Lewes, Sussex, heavy snowfall is not uncommon in Britain's history.

The first criminal trial, without a jury, to take place in England and Wales in 800 years began today. Anita Rani looked at what undertaking jury service is like, and met a man who refused to serve.

Mike Dilger travelled to the Somerset Levels for a birds eye view of one of the UK's greatest natural spectacles - huge flocks of starlings in the sky.

And Sin Week continued with Michael Mosley studying wrath.

What did you think of tonight's One Show? Add a comment.

In regards to the piece on jury service. Nobody gets a choice over which country they are born in. It's pure luck (or not) that I was born here in the UK, but just because I happen to be born here does not automatically mean I agree with the laws of this land or the judicial system in place. You should not be forced to do anything against your will, least of all judge someone else. I'd sooner the system considered me a 'criminal' rather than be part of jury service - I will not ever do it no matter what. I live on this earth by my rules and my laws and my morales, not that of the land - essentially laws are just opinions made up by people before us - you shouldn't necessarily have to agree with them nor live by them, but just use them as a guide with your own morals.

We are supposed to live in a democracy. Voting is not compulsory, jury service should not be also. There will still be plenty wanting to do it, so there would still be a good cross-section of willing jurors so leave it up to them.

John Holyer: What makes me angry is when people just do what they are told instead of THINKING and oding what they actually would like. Added to that is when those brave people make a stance and do what they feel is right and they get no support of understanding.

I am fully aware that what they do with our tax money often is for wars and things I have no desire to fund, but still, some of it does do good for me and the principle of paying taxes fundamentally is not wrong in my opinion - just what 'they' use it for and how 'they' use it is what is questionable.

The justice system is not something I created, it is not based on my rules, on my understanding of what is right and what it wrong, therefore I cannot support it nor respect it. I am adult enough to know what is right and wrong without needing a law in place to say so. I will not be told otherwise. I do not consider myself to be a member of the UK, I am a human being living on this earth and I will live my life as see fit, not by silly guidelines and ideas that other people have formed and decided long ago and no longer in context with how the world is now. I do what I like - not what they like. The very existence of boarders and countries mystifies me for example. We should be able to roam this planet as we see fit - certain parts of it do not belong to certain people - and in time we we realise this. But alas, I am sidetracked - essentially the legal system, like most things in this country, is in need of a dire shake-up and revision and I have no faith in it and I do not feel it represents me and how I feel about justice and punishment - and like what was said before, there are plenty of people who do wish to be jurors so let them be and leave us who don't alone. I am under no illusion that it is my 'duty' - I never signed anything saying such, I never agreed to it, therefore you have just 'decided' it my duty, but it isn't - it's just something in your head. Being born somewhere does not automatically mean you have a duty - that's bull being fed to you to make you do things you shouldn't have to do.

Going to school is taint amount to sending children to a factory or training ground to be turned into little worker bees so that they can make more money for the greedy capitalists that run the world. If schools did what they were supposed to and teach children the things they NEED to know like how to communicate, how to express love, how to be understanding, how to simply just 'be' - then perhaps we would not have the crime we do and there would be no need for the justice system - people are able to self-govern and self-regulate given the chance without have a system in pace to do it for them. We are being turned into zombified sheep, 'they' keep making us feel like we are powerless and yet we are the most powerful things in the universe. Your lack of spirituality and understanding means most of this will go over your head and you will never truly understand my point.

I see no point in voting when essentially it's just one evil over another - whoever you choose will end up messing it up anyway so what it the point? You get me a candidate who believes in the power of the human spirit and not in capitalism and I will vote.

Don't you just love these bods who wish to cherry pick as to what part they will take in the running of this country! Marcos, if you don't wish to take part in the responsibility we all have to the safety and well being of the population of Britian by the operation of a fair and safe justice system perhaps you would also like to opt out of the protection of the Police Force, the voting system which allows you your say in the government of this country, and the social system which will provide you with a pension when you retire! Go it alone sunshine and see how far you get. I would suggest you do your jury service if asked and learn to live with the rest of us.

I like ALL language, 'swearing' words are often as good as any non-swearing word - if not better - they are words all the same and should be used as when - they have a use, so use them.

I think the reason why so many people get angry about these issues is they begin to realise that there are people out there who don't just do as they are told and instead do what they think is right. Suddenly these angry 'sheep' for want of a better word, feel like they have been duped by the system - they never realised they could form their own opinions and they resent others who have had the moxie to do so.

I shall not entertain you on this matter any further as it interest me not and has nothing to do with my point. It's evident you just don't like what I have to say and are trying your best to attack me - it's not working. You must be very insecure....and another thing, from what I have seen tonight, the person you are does not appear to be a nice one and as you are a creation of your 'good ole mum' I certainly wouldn't be listening to her or her advice. I evidently have more than a basic grasp of the English language and am probably more intelligent than you given what you have said so far, so judging someone on how their vocabulary is just because they use swear words is a little irrelevant....as I said, you are just out to wind people up - not actually engage properly in the debate at hand.

I love the show - who said I didn't? I LOVE the fact it brought up this issue of compulsory jury service as I don't think has been properly dealt with before - and because of that fact, I have never had proper chance to express my views on it or discuss with others. The simple fact is you don't have to fight in services for this country any more, you don't have to vote either and therefore you should not have to do jury service. It should be optional and you should not make those who do not wish to do feel bad about it. Not everyone is the same and not everyone believes what you do and you should allow for that. By not doing so, you are being unfair.

I did Jury Service a few years ago. Six weeks. It was annoying, boring and interesting in equal measures. A bit like life, really!
Like it or not, you can't ever be completely separate from society. One may disagree with some aspects, but if you're here, then you're part of it. You can't pick and choose which laws to obey just because you don't like them. It's all or nothing (with the democratic option to campaign/vote for or against particular aspects and get thing changed).
I've met many people who claim to have "dropped out" when all they've done is stop working/voting/paying taxes and then live on handouts. That's not dropping out, that's making yourself even more reliant on society.
Campaign for change? - Yes. It's our democratic right
Moan about the things we don't like, and ignore laws that we disagree with? - No. Immature, irresponsible, and doesn't change a thing.

What planet is that Town Planner from? He repeatedly said that travel difficulties are due to where "people choose to live". *Choose* to live?
Most people don't have a free choice of where they live/work and the distance between.
I work in central London, but I live on the outskirts. Given the choice, I would rather live nearer to work and avoid the commuting. Unfortunately, I can't afford to live near where I currently work, and there are no jobs where I can afford to live.
Similarly, I have friends who live in the North of England. There are no jobs where they live. Property prices where there are jobs are too high for them to move, so they too are forced to commute.
Yes, in an ideal world we'd start again and all towns would be planned so that everyone could live and work where they wanted to, but at the moment the distance between work and home is dictated by economics rather than choice.
